I think the mediocre result was because the filters were simply applied in the wrong order.

Running every filter on an image is old hat for the Quality Engineers testing Photoshop. If you think someone will try it, even if you think it’s stupid-crazy, you need to test it.
[Yeah, and further to that point, I wouldn't be surprised if PS QE had tried running every filter *simultaneously, as Smart Filters*. Now *that* would be crazy. --J.]
