Snow Leopard 10.6.2 fixes problems with Photoshop

Good news: Apple has released a Snow Leopard update that fixes a number of problems customers have reported. The Photoshop team has been helping Apple test these fixes and can confirm the following improvements:

Affecting multiple versions of Photoshop:

  • 50654: When opening and saving, applications–including Adobe applications–may sporadically crash
  • 51230: Images don’t open when dragged onto the Adobe program icon in the Dock
  • 51220: Crash or program error occurs when using Menlo font in Photoshop and Premiere CS3 and CS4

CS4-specific:

  • 51764: Only one image opens when many are dragged onto Photoshop’s icon
  • 51278: Cursors don’t display correctly in Photoshop CS4
  • 51339: Editing in Photoshop CS4 fails from 64-bit Lightroom in Mac OS X 10.6
  • Cannot drag from Safari onto Photoshop icon (and other application icons) in Dock to open file

If you experience any problems, please let us know.

Sweet, that edit in Photoshop from Lightroom not working was driving me nuts.

  • Michael Glasser — 10:50 AM on November 10, 2009

Yeah! No more crashs when saving for web and devices. That was a *big* deal for me… though, since it happened in other programs, clearly an Apple problem and not an Adobe one.

  • Andrew — 11:02 AM on November 10, 2009

Have updated to 10.6.2 and just tried to save a .jpg image for web and photoshop is now not responding again… doh

  • Matt Lee — 11:18 AM on November 10, 2009

We have been having trouble with zooming being EXTREMELY slow. Is this a known issue?

  • ken — 1:56 PM on November 10, 2009

    John,
    This is of topic:
I have searched adobe in vain and have not found out if I do this in Premiere pro CS4
    1. Is there a batch or automated mode to auto transitions at once. If so, can you point me to abobe resource to do this
    2. I down sized my photos, but when I put them into the frames, It looks like I have to re-size all 200 to “Fit” into the viewing box. Any automated way to do this as a batch command? Please point to an abobe “how to” if you know.
If can can direct me or refer me to a adobe site or anything, greatly appreciate this,
    Ken in KY

About time! CS4 was crashing on almost every save/export. Since the 10.6.2 update, I have been using ID, PS, and AI without crashing. This made my day!

  • Pissed Mac User — 7:16 PM on November 10, 2009

    About fricken time!
Thanks Apple, now maybe we can get some work done.

  • Rosyna — 9:44 PM on November 10, 2009

    I am pleased.
10.x.0 is the release version, 10.x.1 fixes some high-priority fixes that could not be completed on 10.x.0.
10.x.2 is the feedback release, the first version in which Apple has incorporated bug reports from 10.x.0 and many fixes that people have asked for asked for.
Somehow I am implying that that you shouldn’t install 10.x.0 until 10.x.2 is released. Do not infer this as that.

ACR defaults add about 1 f stop of brightness to Canon raw files shot on a 5d mk2. (Haven’t tested other Canon cameras yet.)
Color also does not match compared to viewing in Canon DPP.
    In 10.5.8 both apps matched.
    Any thoughts?

  • Henry — 12:00 PM on November 11, 2009

I still can’t see a full image when doing an File, Open in Mac Finder Preview Mode. And Dreamweaver still crashes but on different actions, like when selecting Window, Extensions.

  • Henry — 12:17 PM on November 11, 2009

And another thing – my printer settings changed! Can’t select 4×6 paper size, for example. But it’s available if I use Preview.

  • Axel Polt — 12:30 PM on November 11, 2009

Fine; in Mac OS 10.6.2 64 bit: now i can transfer successfully more than 3 pictures from Lr 2.5(64bit) to CS4 PS and PS even starts merging!!! Great news, and then PS crashes… Autopano Pro really helps

  • someone — 12:50 PM on November 11, 2009

Maybe it fixed something, but I still can’t use PS or ILL. The apps open up in 12 minutes (ill) and 25 minutes for PS. Working with it is impossible. Everything is too slow. 10.6.2 did not fix that for me. What is wrong here? I’m on the latest mac pro, but it feels like I’m in windows78

  • Josiah Sprague — 2:38 PM on November 11, 2009

Hi, I’m having a problem with Premiere on Snow Leopard (10.6.2). I just bought Premiere, installed it, and reinstalled it, but I cannot get it to open a project, I get an ASIO (USB Audio) driver error that causes Premiere to quit. Neither Adobe Technical Support nor Apple Care could tell me anything, and Adobe Technical Support refused to escalate me even after hours of talking on the phone. Can you help?

  • Gene Burreson — 12:53 PM on November 13, 2009

I installed 10.6.2, but Photoshop 7 still won’t open. It says: An unexpected and unrecoverable problem has occurred because of a program error. Photoshop will now exit
[I believe Apple has said that PS7 isn’t supported on Snow Leopard. --J.]

  • Dunca — 6:52 AM on November 15, 2009

After the mac os x v10.6 snow leopard update running CS4 everything i do in PS (and i mean everything) gives me a beach ball pause, so selecting a different tool for example means i have to wait a second before it works. Even cloning – one click means beach ball, every time!
    Thanks apple for screwing me!

  • Henry — 12:54 PM on November 16, 2009

The only PS CS4 issue fixed with the latest 10.6.2 is the “crash on save”. Other than that, there are still plenty of problems. Am I supposed to re-install PS?
[What other problems are you seeing? --J.]

  • ouzone — 12:05 PM on November 17, 2009

My CS 4 crashes randomly on open/save, edit smart objects, edit 3D objects, etc… and all this is much more often after updating to 10.6.2. Really should go all the way back to 10.5.

  • CMCM — 9:28 AM on November 18, 2009

I’m using CS and am afraid to upgrade to CS4 given what I’m reading. CS operates under Rosetta, and the only couple of problem I’ve noted are that an ID doc sometimes won’t open via a double click…rather, you have to open via the open menu and navigate to the file. And Acrobat Pro 6.02 sometimes crashes when creating a jpeg from a pdf. Otherwise, all is well. I’d sure like to be able to upgrade, though… but I guess I’ll wait. I can’t afford to have my workflow interrupted with all these problems with SL.

  • Pissed Mac User — 10:35 AM on November 18, 2009

You mean you’re waiting to upgrade to 10.6, right?
I mean, this mess is due to Snow Lopeard, not the applications.

  • Joa — 5:42 AM on November 19, 2009

    Hi,
this may be of interest for all that use a wacom tablet – since updating to SL the 64-bit tablet driver *sometimes* goes crazy and uses a lot of memory (we are talking of some dozens GB here).
So if you are mainly using PS and have a tablet and *everything* is extremely slow in SL it may well be that the tablet driver has gone crazy. It’s not PS’s fault here, but with all memory occupied crashes and weird behaviour can be observed.
Wacom is already informed about that behaviour.

I just installed 10.6.2 on my Mac Pro. I am having major problems with Photoshop Cs3 crashing usually after startup. I have NEVER had this level of instability. I am a web designer and I am totally screwed at this point. Given some of the other complaints does not sound like upgrading to CS4 will helpe either. I hope Apple is listening.

You are crashing in Apple code, something in their code doesn’t like your fonts, or a font cache.
You could try a cache cleaner program, or removing your fonts and adding them back a few at a time.
Or you can send the crash reports to Apple and hope they get it fixed soon.

  • tim — 2:55 PM on November 23, 2009

I’m still on 10.5 after downgrading (painfully) and am nervous to go to 10.6.2 because of how unstable 10.6 was and that I wasn’t able to really use photoshop at all (which I do every single day)
    Should I upgrade?

  • Sam — 2:22 AM on November 25, 2009

10.6.2 has had no affect on stability for me. Photoshop cs4 crashing on save v.regularly (up to 7/8 times a day). More often when using save as shortcut, but also when using the drop down menu and sometimes during save, which corrupts the whole file.

  • Paul — 4:41 AM on November 26, 2009

We are experiencing an ATI / Adobe crashing problem not fixed by 10.6.2 work around (slow):
In Bridge pref>advanced> ticked ‘use software rendering’ (default unticked which should be faster but causing crashes)
In Photoshop pref>performance> unticked ‘Enable OpenGL drawing” (default is ticked which should be faster but causing crashes)

  • Jeffrey Tranberry — 11:55 AM on November 26, 2009

Hi Paul, I saw the bug report you submitted via our form on Adobe.com. Thanks. We’ll investigate with Apple and ATI. There might have been a change in the driver between Leopard and Snow Leopard.

  • Paul — 9:29 AM on November 28, 2009

Thank you Jeffrey – please let me know the outcome if possible as I will be pleased to get the graphics card preformance back again! Our imac seems v slow with out it!

  • Chita Hunter — 4:54 PM on November 29, 2009

    Hi John,
Last week I installed Snow Leopard and immediately ran the 10.6.2 update. Previously under Leopard, I had no problems at all with Bridge/PS CS4.
Bridge and Photoshop are always on together on my machine. 17″ MacBook Pro, 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB Ram.
I open my images from Bridge into PS. Yesterday I noticed as I was trying to open a second image from Bridge into PS, the image would not open.
Double-clicking within Bridge will switch to PS, the file will not open.
At that point, I noticed that several items in Photoshop’s menus were grayed out. Items like:
    About Photoshop
    Quit
Open Recent (the entire menu was grayed out even though populated with files.
    Keyboard shortscuts would not work.
I can go to File > Open and open a file, though.
About 95% of the Layer menu functions are grayed out from normal use.
    Photoshop ran sluggish as well.
I could still work in the file and even save it, but could not quit out of the program.
Nothing short of Force Quit would get me out of this situation.
Also, even if I did not open an image from within Bridge first, though Bridge is running, PS would also do the same thing after a few minutes of working in it.
Today, the same problems, until I decided to continue to troubleshoot and this time I did not open Bridge with PS.
So far I have been working in PS for about 30 minutes without the problems occuring. Bridge is not running. Typically it took 5 minutes for the problems to occur.
When I finally did launch Bridge and open files from it, it opened about 4 files before Photoshop began it’s weirdness and I had to Force Quit it.
    Painful!

  • Chris Cox — 10:37 PM on November 29, 2009

Chita – those sound like common problems due to third party plugins that need to be updated for Snow Leopard.

  • Richard Broom — 12:17 AM on November 30, 2009

Continuing problems here too with Snow Leopard. Tried all sorts this weekend but PS still crashes on save and save as. Also driving me nuts!

  • Chita Hunter — 6:11 AM on November 30, 2009

    Hi Chris,
    Thanks for the response.
I’ll troubleshoot what I have here.
It’ll be nice if a plug-in is the issue.
Working without the Bridge/PS combo is terrible. :-)
    C

  • Pam — 7:26 AM on November 30, 2009

    I’m having the same issue.
    Any resolution?
it’s frustrating not being able to use the shortcuts. I can’t even flatten image!…

  • Cissy — 5:42 PM on November 30, 2009

I use CS4, mostly InDesign and Photoshop. I recently upgraded my iMac from 1 GB to 3GB of RAM, and everything was awesomely fast. CS4 worked fabulously. Then I updated my system from 10.6.1 to 10.6.2, and immediately Indesign & Photoshop developed a pause every approx. 5 seconds. No matter what I’m doing within the program, no matter how large or small the file, no matter how many or few applications I have open, I still get the very same beachball-spinning pause with every little thing I try to do, always. It’s very frustrating, I am having a lot of trouble getting any work done. I hope they fix this soon!

  • John — 9:22 PM on November 30, 2009

Photoshop CS3 just started crashing two day ago on the save as command. Running 10.6.2. Never had this problem while on 10.6.1.

  • John — 9:51 PM on November 30, 2009

I’ve disabled “Enable Version Cue” (Preferences > File Handing) and the crashing has stopped when trying to save a file in Photoshop CS3. Hope that helps someone else.

  • Chita Hunter — 12:45 PM on December 01, 2009

    Chris,
Yesterday I removed the only third-party plug-in that was installed within PS CS4 previous to my Snow Leopard update and so far I’ve had no further problems with my Bridge CS4/PS CS4/Snow Leopard workflow. If something changes, I’ll post it.Thanks for the info.

Hi, Premiere Pro 4.2 is crashing semi regularly when I’m trying to play back video that has a title. It does it with different fonts, not just one. I’ve tried removing fonts, I’ve tried having premiere make a new project with the footage from the project manager, i’ve tried restarting, i’ve tried it on a fresh install (which I was planning to do anyway) of 10.6.2 with 4.2, (and no extra fonts added other than what apple and what Adobe installed)
both setups have final cut as well installed, but not running. I’ve also seen in the activity monitor (on the original 10.5.8 setup) that the photoshopserver isnt responding) Any ideas here? please help!

I’m running CS3 on 10.6.2 and my beautiful PS tool has become a nightmare. I’ve had it refuse to allow me to bring up levels. I’ve had it quit time and time again after being asked to do a SIMPLE STROKE. I am crippled. I don’t know what to do.

Now with the new update 10.6.2 my Dreamweaver crashes on launch and wont even open. Anyone else having this problem?

I’ve restarted several times. I’ve quite every other application. My Quickbooks has also failed in the most spectacular and stupid ways. But it’s the PS CS3 that is leaving me helpless and desperate. When I use a text box, I can type in it – but only at the font size and style setting the program has chosen. Can’t change the color, size or font after the initial typing. I select all to stroke around something and I get a whirling ball, then the program simply vanishes. Why?? My laptop has 10.6.1 on it, and the stroke works there. WHY did I download the supposed cure?

Is it possible to revert to 10.6.1?

I know this is not the first time you’ve heard this. Do not upgrade anything on your production system unless the upgrade has been thoroughly tested. Especially if your livelyhood depends on said system.

I have upgraded to snow leopard 10.6.2 and operate at 64 bit and have had no problems whatsoever with CS4 (extended) and LR2. Nikon ViewNX has all the problems I have seen mentioned elsewhere and is obviously caused by Nikon being behind in updating their compatibility with SL.
[Snow Leopard broke your software, and that's Nikon's fault? --J.]
NX2 I think works now I have 2.2.3 but the jury is out. I would like to know though how you can operate Photoshop CS4 and LR2 software at 64 bit speed. Or is this a function of SL operating at 64 bit?
["64-bit speed" is largely a figment of the collective imagination. 64-bit is about addressing huge amounts of RAM. For many things (e.g. your 64-bit Dock) it's effectively irrelevant. --J.]

Unfortunately, my success was not permanent. This issue has arisen again.
It arises when using Bridge/PS combo.

I was experiencing the same problems as many other posters here with Photoshop CS4, which started or worsened after upgrading to 10.6.2 — frequent crashes when attempting file operations being the most visible issue.
Hoping I might be able to get Photoshop back to a usable state, I uninstalled and reinstalled the app. After that, I wasn’t even able to get through a File > Open… without it crashing. (Except for the one try where it hung, instead, and required a Force Quit.)
Searching around Apple’s support site, I found article TS3161 regarding similar problems with some of their own iWhatever apps[1]. In the spirit of “what the hey”, I decided to try the recommended fix (restarting to Safe Mode, and then back to a normal boot).
So far (and it’s only been maybe an hour), the problems I was experiencing seem to have been completely resolved. Since I couldn’t get past attempting to open a file before, I can say with certainty that stability has improved. Here’s hoping it stays that way. But cycling through a Safe Mode boot seems worth trying, for anyone having stability problems under 10.6.2!

I have had nothing but trouble with CS3 since installing it on my new MacBook Pro, even though I have OS10.6.2. Initially, PS quit unexpectedly or froze. Then I suddenly could not open RAW files and determined that my RAW processor had been corrupted. After uninstalling and reinstalling CS3, I could access my RAW files, for a short time. Now I get an error message telling me that PS does not recognize this type of file. When I called Apple Tech Support, I was told to call Adobe. When I called Adobe, I was told that I would have to pay to have them help me on the phone. I am now waiting to hear back from Adobe via the website and of course it remains to be seen if they will determine that I am “eligible” for their support. If there is a fix with 10.6.2, I’d sure love to know what it is.

We are still seeing InDesign and Illustrator crash on launch. PhotoShop will open, but will crash when creating or opening a file. I have tried all of the “fixes” – boot into safe mode, disable sharing, 10.6.2 combo update, remove Adobe prefs, etc. We need a solution ASAP!

I installed the update last night, now none of my adobe software works.
Tried the safe mode boot, that didn’t help, I can’t work without my software does anyone have a solution?
