Adobe and FedEx Kinko's Update
As I said in my last blog, we promised to look into what we could do to address the concerns raised by the print industry regarding the deal we signed with FedEx Kinko's. We’ve done that.
Adobe announced today that we will release an update of Adobe Reader and Acrobat Professional which will remove the "Send to FedEx Kinko's" button from those products. The update will be released in about 10 weeks. I know that there are a lot of folks who will be asking why we can't do it this afternoon. The answer is we can't just go back to the 8.0 release since the 8.1 release that contains the button included a lot of critical security and quality updates in addition to the new print option. We have determined the best way to move forward is with an 8.1.1 update. We have moved as many people as we can on to the project, but it takes time to do the standard testing that is required to ensure that we don't cause more problems by not performing sufficient testing.
We made a commitment to the print industry to address the concerns they raised about the FedEx deal. We made a commitment to all our customers to deliver the best, most secure product possible. We plan to deliver on both those commitments, and it takes time.
I'd like to acknowledge that FedEx Kinko's really went the extra mile to work with us to come to a resolution. They could have taken a tough line, because we do have a formal contract, but they showed a lot of class and understanding about the concerns within the print community. I do want to say that FedEx Kinko's has a great vision for enabling worldwide remote printing to increase speed and convenience for their customers. So I'd like to give my personal thanks to the team at FedEx Kinko’s.
Thanks to those of you who have shared your ideas on how to resolve this issue and thanks to everyone for your patience as we addressed the concerns.

Thank you for doing the right thing. I'll continue to buy Adobe products from now on!!

That's a wise move; a sensible move. Nobody minds a 900 pound gorilla if it's capable of considering more than its own seating preference, and responsible enough to do something because it's right...

Too bad that we can't have options for our software. If anyone else wanted to put a button on Adobe then let them pay for it like Fedex did. If you don't want to use the icon then just ignore it. No reason for people to get upset over an icon being there.

Fedex had as much to loose as Adobe. How many members of the print community use Fedex shipping services? How many large and small printers, would it take before Fedex would loose more than it gained. If a dozen large printer and hundreds of small printers decided to switch to other vendors because of this move, like tommorrow what would happen. It really was a loose loose idea for both Fedex and Adobe. And It is very easy to replace FedEx shipping; abit harder to replace Adobe software. Could it be that Fedex was worried about the deal and our reaction to it. So perhaps they realized this was not a good idea too and wanted out of the agreement as much as Adobe did.

Basically, I don't trust Adobe anymore. You guys are being a little too clever with your product strategy - my revenue and efforts are going elsewhere. Done.

Why don't you just put the current download with the Fedex button on the Fedex.com website and make Fedex pay for the bandwidth for all the downloads. Fedex paid for the gawd darn button, make Fedex pay for the downloading bandwidth too. And then give users the option of downloading the old version even with the bugs and all. Or just tell people going to the download page to hold off on downloading anything. Don't be such idiots because you are giving Fedex a another TEN-WEEK window of providing Adobe software with that Fedex button on the software. You should have fixed this YESTERDAY if not WEEKS AGO

Some of us would LIKE to have the Kinko link in the Adobe software. Why can't it be an optional part of an advanced setup? FEDEX/Kinko's is obviously ready for the next step in automation. There may be others who can do the same. If so, let them get a certification and then the option of being listed as an automation partner with an optional custom button for printing available.

Keep version 8.1 then. At the least Adobe should pull the 8.1 update from Adobe's auto updater. The shipping part of FedEx is a great company - what were they thinking about buying Kinko's??? I have tried to use Kinkos but their staff don't know an apple (mac) from a bananna! Most of the staff are not very friendly and they don't have the latest versions of creative suite (which is quite an irony considering the deal)

What you don't mention (and have to go to the press release to find) is that FedEx will be giving their clients a version with the button in it! What about doing the same for other printers? And if this only affects the US version of 8.1, why not pull it and replace it with the UK version right now?

If the logo annoys you, right click the icon and de-select it from the menu. How difficult is that? You can always right click on the menu again and add it. -KK
