Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder 3.2 – now shipping


We are trying to squeeze as much out of 2010 as we possibly can. Today I’m happy to announce the availability of Flash Media Live Encoder 3.2 for MAC and Windows.

Flash Media Live Encoder is a free tool that streams high quality live video to the Adobe Flash Platform using Adobe Flash Media Server 4. You can use FMLE to deliver RTMP streams, HTTP Dynamic Streaming, Multicast and Multicast using P2P (with Flash Media Server). FMLE can also be used with Flash Media Server on Amazon Web Services to easily deliver your live content.

Big new features in this update include

Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder 3.2

Announcing Adobe Flash Media Server on Amazon Web Services


Today, we have announced Adobe Flash Media Server on Amazon Web Services! This is Flash Media Enterprise Server 4 available as an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) for sale on Amazon Web Services (AWS) as a pay-as-you-go offering.

I’m very excited about this release – it’s been a long time coming – and has been one of the most requested features by developers and business who use Amazon Web Services and Flash Media Server today. This release significantly lowers the entry barrier for developers and companies who want to leverage the full feature set of the Adobe Flash Platform, including all the communication and streaming functionality enabled by Flash Media Server. You can use Flash Media Server on Amazon Web Services without purchasing hardware, network infrastructure, or a full license of Flash Media Server.







FMS on AWS is licensed at $5 a month and you can deploy as many instances of Flash Media Server as you need, and you can do it on-demand with full elasticity – so you can meet the demands as your business grows. Flash Media Server on Amazon Web Services is priced based on the number RTMFP /P2P connections you need. With offerings from 100 connections through 10,000 connections, you can get started quickly and cheaply – and as your demand grows, you can manage your costs and deployment. Today, Flash Media Server is available in the US-East and Singapore Amazon data centers, and we have plans that include full deployment in all Amazon locations.

You need an account on Amazon.com enabled with EC2, and a credit card. You can use your existing account, or create a new one. Just follow the instructions as you subscribe and log in. Once you’ve logged in, you can purchase access to the Flash Media Server AMI. When you’re done, you can log into Amazon Web Services EC2 panel, and search for “Adobe” in the community AMIs. Click launch, set your start up environment and you’re ready to go. You can manage Flash Media Server using the Admin Console (requiring a manual start), and you can use SSH and SFTP to manage the server and upload files safely and securely.

FMS on AWS includes the full Flash Media Enterprise Server feature set:

  • RTMFP/P2P connections (connection number based on AMI instance type)
  • Unlimited RTMP/RTMPe/RTMPt/RTMPs connections
  • Full support for HTTP Dynamic Streaming including a pre-configured HTTP origin
  • Full support for all real-time protection with RTMPe and SWF Verification
  • Full support for Adobe Flash Access (with valid License)
  • No client-side caching
  • Access control layers at the server level
  • SharedObjects
  • Server-Side ActionScript
  • C++ Plugins
  • Full control over all server configurations
  • Pre-configured Apache web server
  • And everything else we could put in the virtual box

You also have full root access to the virtual machine – built on top of CENT OS, so you can install additional services on it that meet your business needs.

RTMFP connections are tied directly to the instance size you choose. For example, a Large instance will be limited to 100 RTMFP p2p connections, and a High-memory quadruple extra-large instance will enable 10,000 RTMFP p2p connection. If you stream video today using Content Delivery networks, you can increase your flexibility using FMS on AWS as your HTTP origin server. Package your pre-recorded content or live streams into F4F and distribute through your favorite CDN(s). You can even stream directly from your Flash Media Server instance using RTMP or Application Level Multicast – the new P2P delivery option for live streaming using Flash Player. Leverage Flash Media Playback (built on Open Source Media Framework) as your video player, and you can be up and running in minutes. You can even stream directly from your EBS volume!

To help make you successful, Adobe support will be available for Flash Media Server on Amazon Web Services, but your best (and free) way to get the support you need will be through the Flash Media Server forums – which are monitored by our Flash Media Server product team. Adobe Flash Media Server 4.0.1 and OSMF 1.5 now available

FMS4.0-mnemonic.PNGToday, we released Adobe Flash Media Server 4.0.1 as a free upgrade to customers who have purchased Flash Media Server 4. This update includes all editions including Flash Media Streaming Server 4.0.1, Flash Media Interactive Server 4.0.1 and Flash Media Enterprise Server 4.0.1.

This release is primarily a security update, but there are also numerous bug fixes included. We have also updated the Multicast Configuration tool, which includes full support now for the updated Open Source Media Framework 1.5 (also now available).

Open Source Media Framework 1.5 now includes full support for IP multicast, Multicast Fusion and Application Level Multicast (using Peer to Peer functionality). Included in this release is an updated definition of the F4M Manifest file that includes support for Multicast and P2P delivery.

Additionally, OSMF now supports the stream reconnect features found in Flash Player 10.1 and Flash Media Server 4 (all versions). This feature allows you to continue viewing video even if your network connection fails, and if you can reconnect before the buffer empties, you will have no disruption in playback.

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert’s Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear – delivered online and device in Flash

On Saturday Oct. 30 from 12:00-3:00pm ET Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and fans from across the country of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report” will gather on the National Mall in Washington DC for the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear, an event Stewart says is “for the people who’ve been too busy to go to rallies — not so much the Silent Majority as the Busy Majority.”


Interested in tuning in, but can’t make it to the National Mall? The Rally and March will be streamed live on Comedy Central using the Adobe Flash Platform. Viewers can also catch the action live on their Android 2.2 “froyo” enabled device, using Flash Player 10.1.

Discover Live P2P video streaming with Adobe Flash: Inside scoop into the Adobe MAX keynote player

Yesterday, Live from Adobe MAX at the Nokia Theatre at LA Live in Los Angeles, we broadcast the Adobe Day 1 Keynote using P2P with Flash Media Server 4 and Flash Player 10.1. The live event simulcast using multiple Adobe technologies including high definition, RTMP Dynamic Streaming to give you the highest possible quality for both the Desktop and optimized for Flash-enaled Mobile devices.

This is one of the first premiere live events using the new P2P technology, and we were happy to hear so many of you around the globe were excited with the experience. RTMFP (the P2P protocol in Flash Player 10.1) was used to deliver a 400kbps stream to hundreds of people around the globe both live, and in a live replay all day.

WE ARE GOING TO STREAM AGAIN TODAY – And you do not want to miss the Keynote today, and another chance to see Adobe’s P2P technology in action again.

More about the P2P Client used at Adobe MAX 2010


When the video consumer launch the P2P version of the video stream, the controls will reveal statistics about the current bitrate, the number of Flash Clients connected to the P2P Group (shown above as 272), and the number of Clients around you that your experience will contribute to (shown above as 30).

What’s unique about P2P is in addition to the download datarate (shown above as 314kbps), there is an upload data rate (show above as 190kbps). The upload datarate is your contribution to your neighbor’s experience – in this case, 190kbps were being contributed across 30 connections. The player also displays how much video you have in your buffer (shown above as 4s).


Each time a client joins a P2P group, the Flash Player displays the privacy dialog (shown above). This dialog gives the user a choice if they want to participate in the Peer Assisted Network and allow the application to use some of the upload bandwidth of the client. If the user clicks Allow, the stream will start, if they click Deny, then the stream will not start. For Developers, these events can be captured in ActionScript and responded to – by either defaulting back to a Unicast (RTMP/HTTP) stream, or delivering a different experience all together. For the Adobe MAX keynote stream, the player will just show black if you click Deny.


The full P2P Player experience was completely developed using the Open Source Media Framework, and is why the end user receives a consistent experience regardless of device, network or transport protocol. So if you decide to watch the high quality RTMP stream on the desktop or mobile device, you will receive the same experience optimized for Peer Assisted Networking.

New Encoding settings for multiple screens using Adobe Media Encoder CS5

Today at Adobe MAX, we announced new encoding profiles for Adobe Media Encoder CS5 (part of the Adobe Creative Suite 5) to help publishers deliver a consistent experience across multiple screens with full adaptive bitrate.



There is no single general encoding setting that fits all business cases, so we have provided 7 settings that will get you started. These settings will cover screen sizes ranging from mobile phones, tablets, desktops and televisions. If you produce your video using Adobe Production Premium CS5 you now have a simple workflow that will make your video look great across many screens.


Once installed, you will have these encoding settings available to you directly in the Adobe Media Encoder CS5 interface (see above)

We divided the 7 encoding profiles into 3 categories and optimized for sreen-size, encoding and bitrate.

CATEGORY A: Tablet and Mobile devices (frame size: 512 x 288)

  • Phone + Tablet 3G (350kbps)
  • Phone + Tablet Low (500kbps)
  • Phone + Tablet Wifi (700kbps)

CATEGORY B: Desktop and Television (SD) (frame size: 768 x 432)

  • Desktop + TV (1200kbps)
  • Desktop + TV (1800kbps)

CATEGORY C: Desktop and Television (HD) (frame size: 1280 x 720)

  • HD Desktop + TV (2500kpbs)
  • HD Desktop + TV (3500kbps)

Once the videos are encoded, you can use Flash Media Playback to deliver a full multibitrate experience across all screens that support Flash Player 10.1
