Update for LiveCycle Designer 8.2

A bug introduced with LiveCycle Designer ES Update 1 (8.2) is now fixed in LiveCycle service pack 2 and the Acrobat 9.1 update. The bug causes a processing instruction ex. <?templateDesigner StyleID aped3?> to get copied repeatedly while working with the form. This can lead to extremely large file sizes and sometime causes crashes. The fix removes duplicate StyleID's found in existing forms and prevents them from being created.

If you installed Livecycle Designer with Acrobat Pro or Acrobat Pro extended you'll need to apply the update

If you installed LiveCycle Designer with LiveCycle Workbench or as a stand alone product and have a maintence and support agreement in place please contact Adobe Enterprise Support .

Translating Forms

We recently posted a document on translating forms that I'd like to call you attention to. The LiveCyle ES Update 1 Designer (aka 8.2) provides a method of generating unique ids in the form template to identify text strings . The strings can then be extracted using an XSLT into a common tranlsation format know as XLIFF , translated and then inserted into a new copy of the template using another XSLT. This type of automation allows you to quickly produce multiple languages of a form from a single source without manually maintaining multiple versions. There are sample XSLTs provided as attachments to the document along with full instructions on how to use the feature.

Hot Off The Press

IT'S HERE!!!!

designerbook.bmp

Hot off the press from Peach Pit is "Creating Dynamic Forms with Adobe LiveCycle Designer" by J.P. Terry.
J.P. has been working hard for the last several months to produce this book. The LiveCycle Designer team has had the pleasure of working with J.P. to review and comment on each chapter of the book. J.P. has also had the support of his knowledgeable team at SmartDoc Technologies.

It's been a great collaborative effort and I think that really shows through in the book. It's an excellent book for beginners to get started with LiveCycle Designer but it also cover advanced topics in detail.

The book is available for $44.99 from Peach Pit Press, Amazon.com, and bookstores near you such as Barnes and Noble and Borders. I understand you will also be able to pick up a copy in the bookstore at MAX 2007.

LiveCycle Designer - The Book

If I had a nickel for every time someone asked if there was a book on LiveCycle Designer, I'd .... well ... I'd have a lot of nickels. Well, finally a book is in the works on LiveCycle Designer! In fact it is almost here.

J.P. Terry of SmartDoc Technologies is the author of Creating Dynamic Forms with Adobe LiveCycle Designer. I don't have an exact release date at this stage but it should be available later this summer. You can pre-order from Amazon.com now. I've been working with J.P. for a while. He is very knowledgeable, a great speaker and writer and very enthusiastic. You may have seen articles he has written for our developers' network such as this one.

I've seen a couple of chapters and it's going to be a great book and very useful. Enjoy!

New Scripting Guide Available

One thing that we hear a lot about from our customers is documentation. Whether we are visiting customer sites, a attending a conference or following activity in the forums, we hear about the need for more and improved documentation.

A common thread in these discussions is the need for more information on form scripting. Based on that feedback we created a document that was recently posted on DevNet. It was posted just before Christmas, so you may have missed it if you are not a DevNet regular. It's called LiveCycle Designer Scripting Basics. There is lots of great information in this document including examples, an explanation of the event model and how to debug scripts.

Hopefully you will find it useful. If you have a topic you would like to see more documentation on, please post a comment.

Enjoy!
