About this Blog

My name is Jim Merry. I am a business development manager at Adobe and currently focused on building awareness and driving adoption of Adobe’s 3D PDF platform within the manufacturing sector in North America. As not that many people are aware that PDF can support 3D manufacturing data or that Acrobat 3D even exists today, a large part of what I do involves ‘spreading the word’ by speaking at tradeshows, seminars, user groups and other events. This blog will contain notes about when these events are happening, what kind of questions I am hearing from customers and from time to time, some thoughts about general trends in the manufacturing sector.

I hope that this blog will become a venue for 2-way communication and encourage anyone reading this to post comments with your thoughts or questions. The comments are moderated by me but only to avoid spamming. As I also have a regular day job here at Adobe, there may be some lag before you see your comments posted but I will try to keep that to a minimum.

Pacific Design and Manufacturing – Feb 13 – 15

This show surprised all of us in a couple of ways including the number of people attending and the positive cross-over effect from the other shows co-locating at the Anaheim Convention Center. After setting up and looking around at our convention floor ‘neighborhood’ we were concerned to see that the software section amounted to about 3% of the overall exhibitor population. We could have thrown a paper airplane in almost any direction and been able to see huge medical machines, OEM electronic devices, the latest in plastics design and fabrication, as well as automation technologies. We braced ourselves for a long, slow three days.
Once the show started, we were pleasantly surprised at the traffic and the interest level in Adobe’s Acrobat 3D and ended up talking to over 600 people. Based on the results, we are likely to attend similar events in NY and Atlanta later this year. We also heard from several people that Eastec and Westec are good shows for manufacturing. If you have any ideas or thoughts about any of these shows and/or how helpful you find tradeshows, please drop a line in the ‘comment box’…

Solidworks 2007 – recap

Solidworks 2007 in New Orleans has come and gone. Adobe participated in the 4 day vendor exhibit and I presented on the topic, “Hurdling the Obstacles to 3D Collaboration’ during a breakout session. My impression is that Solidworks World ranks as one of the better attended CAD/PLM user group conferences in North America and this year was no different.
