Mailing Lists == self-inflicted pie in the face

So here I am, trying to figure out how best to communicate to my closest 3,000 (developer) friends about upcoming events. Unfortunately, I put my foot squarely in the spam pie…


I was hoping to send a note out to a wide range of people that have expressed some sort of interest in developing for Adobe Creative Suite products, letting them know about the upcoming Quarterly Update (July 12 – see the other note in this blog). I know that many of these email addresses are old, and that some of them belong to people that no longer develop for Adobe products – or who have forgotten that they were ever interested.Sending out an email with 3,000 addresses in the “to:” field isn’t going to work. Sending out an email with 3,000 email addresses in “bcc:” is a quick trip to a spam filter. Sending out 3,000 emails to individuals is more to do than I have time.So I fell back to an old mailing list I had established a couple of years ago. I dumped the email addresses of my 3,000 buddies into the list, and let the mailing list tools sort things out.Unfortunately…1) The unsubscribe tools were disconnected.2) The list description was inaccurate.3) I’m a ham-handed idiot that just subscribed everyone (aka “opt-out”), instead of sending them an invite to join (“opt-in”)4) Except for the small group of recipients that wrote to object being taken OFF of the list, most of us have spam filters that trap these things out. Amusingly, I find that MS-Outlook classified my mailing to myself as Junk mail.So in good faith, I sent an apology, and took down the list. There – let’s see a spammer do THAT!But it leaves me with a question. In a world that traps out one-to-many email communication as spam, what’s the best way to accomplish that task?I’d encourage you to leave your comments – but we shut that down ever since spammers flooded the comment lines with blog-spam…What to do…what to do…MNR
