OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) Compatibility

Mountain LionAs you may be aware, Apple announced the availability of OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion). We’re happy to report that the team began testing Photoshop and Lightroom with OS X 10.8 as soon as it became available to developers. We have worked closely with Apple to review Adobe Creative Suite 5, 5.5 and CS6 editions and individual products for impact on reliability, performance and user experience. Earlier versions of Adobe Photoshop® (CS3 and CS4), Lightroom 4.1, 4.0 and earlier software were also tested and there are currently no known issues.

If you have questions about compatibility, we’ve created an FAQ as a guide.

We’ll be on the lookout for further input from you via our feedback site.

Enjoy the benefits of this new OS!

I am still using CS3 and missed out Lion but went straight to Mountain Lion.

Can’t get Photoshop to work properly: all the tools work but when saving a file it freezes with a little blue “globe” spinning and will not respond to Force Quit.

Then have to restart the Mac manually and wait for everything to reboot and, bizarrely, the file has saved and is OK to use.

    Anyone had a similar problem?

      We haven’t seen this yet…

Are you saving over a network? If so, save locally instead until Apple gets a fix out for SMB: http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/program-error-displays-you-save.html

If not saving over a network, please post the issue with as much detail as you can for the team to look at here: http://phtshp.us/report_a_problem

        Hi Pete

To add to my original post, I do save to a network and have tried saving locally to the desktop with more success.

Also, a new phenomenon is that the Photoshop desktop controls “ghost” when saving and, again, cause a crash, and the only way out is to re-boot the Mac – the Force Quit function will not work on the Photoshop crash.

I am having similar problems with Acrobat/Pitstop, but in this case the program crashes when exporting (to EPS) and like Photoshop the file saves OK – but this only crashes the program and not the system.

        Hope this helps.

        Regards
        Mervyn

Happens to me in almost every Adobe product. Mountain Lion and Adobe CS6 appears to be a cursed combination at the moment….Bad juju everywhere.

After my update to Mountain Lion, everything font related sucks! Microsoft Word crashes, CS5 hangs up I then “force Quit” Hate it. Any suggestions?

I am having the same issue.. at every turn since my upgrade to Mountain Lion, font issue seem to be the cause of all freezes.

I just upgraded to mt lion and am still running Photoshop CS
Do you have any suggestions for me on getting CS to begin functioning?
Thanks. I just caught these posts and thought I’d ask

Frustrated! I am running 10.8.2 with Photoshop CS5 and bamboo tablet.
The cursor disappears continually when I use brushes and other palettes. I’ve found that if I can hit any other application icon in the dock then hit the Ps icon again my curson reappears and I can select brushes, layers, tools again – for a FEW seconds till it again disappears.
This is awful. My work flow is way hampered.

It’s a big deal and I have seen this problem discussed on other blogs and forums.
Back tracking to Snow Leopard is NOT much of a fix.

PLEASE give me some ideas or encouragement – is a fix coming soon???
      Thanks.

I have the same problem, did you find a solution?

        • By Rosie Augustine - 12:19 AM on February 27, 2013   Reply

Nope, still wrestling with it. It IS a big problem and I dont know who to shout to. I am pretty floored that this has not yet been recognized and addressed by the developers. It’s a REAL problem for pro users. HELP please!!!

We are actually having the issue with the missing cursor as well… We just updated to 10.8.2
Will upgrading to CS6 fix this? We have it, but are in the middle of a big project…

PLEASE HELP, since this is killing whatever workflow we had and were hoping to gain from upgrading in the first place!!!

          Hi Edward,

users on our forum have determined that the disappearing cursor issue is an OS problem that’s somehow related to upgrading the OS. A clean install of OS X 10.8.x doesn’t have this problem. Hope this helps.

    Cs5 Bridge will sometimes start,
but when i try to select a folder it immediately crashes.

I have tried rebooting my pc multiple times but it constantly fails.
    I hope you’ll have a fix soon!

I am running the CS4 Suite on my new Retina display Mac. The first issue I’ve stumbled upon is that in Photoshop I cannot 1.) move layers without it freezing, and 2.) copy the layer style from one layer to another by clicking option and dragging the effect up/down to the other layer. I have not attempted to use Premiere, AE, or Illustrator so far to note those issues, but I assume they exist is Photoshop is having Layer issues. Any ideas?

Try resetting the Photoshop Preference file:
Hold down Command, Option, Shift immediately after starting up Photoshop.

A dialog box will appear asking if you wish to delete the preferences/settings file. Click Yes.

      See if that helps out.
If not, then please post the issue with as much detail as you can for the team to help out here:

I had the same problem, recently when update 10.5.8 to 10.8, using photoshop CS6 it was hung every hour, i had to turn off and restart my computer. Now, after pressing alt+cmd+shift when opening Photoshop i´ve been working about 2 hours and everything seems to be ok. I haven´t loaded the brushes, fonts or patterns yet, does anyone knows if these actions may cause problems again? Thank you so much!

PhotoShop 5.5 crashes anytime I try and open a psd file locally. I noticed this first with psd files over the network so I tried doing the files locally instead. No such luck. (Java is installed and current)

    STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
    Open Photoshop
    Browse to psd file
    Open
File opens and PS immediately crashes.

I reinstalled Java for Mountain Lion and so far, everything seems to be working. Crossing my fingers.

Good to hear Thomas. Let us know if you have further issue.

          Pete,

Crossing fingers did not work and neither did reinstalling java. Any advice? I am out of ideas/solutions here…

            Hey Thomas,
The crash mentions several times: FontExplorer X Pro for Photoshop CS5

Can you try launching PS while holding the Shift key to launch without 3rd party plug-ins?
You could test to see how well PS functions with 3rd party plugins shut off.

Then you’ll be looking to troubleshoot either the FontExplorer X Pro for Photoshop CS5 plugin, or perhaps it’s crashing as it loads a font up. So perhaps some font troubleshooting would be necessary here.

For the love of god, put pastes like this in a gist or other pastebin, if someone wants to read, they will click the link, the rest of us should not be forced to scroll through pages of irrelevant, useless text. It’s presumptuous enough to post a crash report and expect people to decipher it, flooding a comment board like this just makes people like me completely unwilling to read.

    • By Jeffrey Tranberry - 10:41 AM on September 17, 2012   Reply

The crashlog indicates that your FontExplorer plug-in is causing the crash. Please update the plug-in or remove it to avoid the crash.

Well. I was just on the phone on hold for an hour and a half only to be told, I need to wait 1-2 weeks to get an update from Adobe for Mountain Lion. Seriously? Wait 1-2 weeks for an update? How is that helpful? BTW, I use this product for my j-o-b. Guess who will spend less time downgrading his OS and reinstalling everything? This guy. Thanks for nothing Adobe… Good luck to the rest of you getting answers.

    • By Pete Green - 2:22 PM on August 14, 2012   Reply

We don’t have any PS update coming that is mountain lion specific. What are you trying to accomplish Thomas?
      Need some help?
PS CS6 works just fine in Mountain Lion

“What are you trying to accomplish Thomas?”
That’s quite a cheap shot from you Pete. Are you trying to discredit what he said? If the Adobe representative told him just that, in order to get rid of him, that person needs to find a more appropriate job, and it seems a bit comtemptuous of you to say he made that up.

        • By Pete Green - 9:38 AM on October 17, 2012   Reply

It’s a genuine question asking him what he needs help with, Thomas does not ask a question, so I am fishing for the actual question behind his post. Not a cheap shot at all. He says he needs a ML update, there isn’t one, and PS works fine in ML. So I’m asking him what he’s working to get done? What the problem is? How can we help? All of those questions are neither cheap shots, not contemptuous, apology if you read into it that way, it is not the intention of the words.

When I save a file in Photoshop cs6 – it can’t be seen or accessed by finder. I’ve saved as PSD, Jpgs and pngs…none visible. I can access it through photoshop and lightroom. I have to workaround by importing saved file into Lightroom then parsing it out again. Then finder see’s it.
    PITA :(

I just recently did a clean install of Mountain Lion on my wife’s MacBook Pro and installed her copy of Adobe CS5. She has been seeing and issue in PhotoShop where every time she closes and reopens the app, all of her tool preferences, brushes, gradients, swatches, etc. reset to defaults. In the case of the switches, I backed up her swatches from CS5 when it was running on Lion, so once I moved to Mountain Lion, I simply loaded the swatches file into PhotoShop and the swatches appeared. However, they’ve since disappeared whenever she closed the app the next time.

Can anyone off help with this issue?

    • By Pete Green - 12:40 PM on August 17, 2012   Reply

Would be a good thing to reset the preferences — info here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776?tstart=0

Not sure why they’ve reset unless the user isn’t an admin user by chance?
Does the same thing happen in a new admin user?

If the preferences reset doesn’t fix, then post the issue here where the team can help you out: http://phtshp.us/AskAQuestion

Thanks Pete, I will give this a try and see how it works out.

    • By Jeffrey Tranberry - 10:43 AM on September 17, 2012   Reply

It sounds like Photoshop isn’t exiting correctly so the preferences aren’t being saved on quit. It’s most likely a plug-in (and more specifically, font management plugin) causing the problem. Try removing or updating the plug-in to correct the problem.

My wife just got a new Mac Book and also purchased Photoshop Elements 10 to use with it. The box and your web-site only says it’s compatible up to OS X 10.7, and she has 10.8. Are there compatibility issues between Elements and 10.8? The online app store calls it “Photoshop Elements 10 Editor”. Is the “Editor” different from the store bought version? We want to make sure before she opens the box and can’t return it.

    Thanks.

Elements 10 will work just fine in 10.8

I had an issue with Mountain Lion and Lightroom 4 (latest version).

Lightroom would no longer read RAW files from my Canon – rolling back to Lion resolved.

I can’t see anyone else with the same issue.

    Hi,
I am thinking of upgrading from Mac OS 10.8.8. Does CS3 run under 10.7 or 10.8? The main reason that I have held back my upgrade is that CS3 runs flawlessly under my present OS, and I’d like to keep using CS3.

    Thanks

From what I’ve read, there are no big issues. You could look at http://roaringapps.com for any notes on the suite. Note that sometimes the notes are out of date, so take them with a grain of salt.

Yep CS3 will work just fine in 10.7 and 10.7

Pete, I’m running CS2 on Mac OS 10.5.8. If I upgrade to OS 10.6.x will CS2 Photoshop and InDesign run?

        • By Jeffrey Tranberry - 10:44 AM on September 17, 2012   Reply

No, CS2 will not run. CS2 requires Apple’s Rosetta emulation to run on 10.6.x or later. Apple has removed Rosetta in newer version of OS X.

I have one machine running Photoshop Elements 6. Is this compatible with Mountain Lion 10.8?

    • By Pete Green - 12:02 PM on September 17, 2012   Reply

It’s an older version, and not necessarily supported, but we are not aware of any specific conflicts with PS Elements 6 and 10.8. It will probably work!

I am using CS3 with Mountain Lion. When I open a PSD created by another, Photoshop asks to update the text layers for user output. In the past, I have always clicked ok. Now, if I do that, I get a pop-up error message that says, “Could not complete request due to program error.” I hit okay, error message pops up again. I end up having to force quit the application, lose any changes, and start over.

If I do not hit okay to update the text layers, I am okay to work for a little while, but the application still crashes eventually.

Ideas?? I did upgrade Java, so I don’t think that’s the problem.

    Thanks for your help!

So, is Photoshop Elements 8 also working with Mountain Lion or are there known issues or limitations?

I seem to be unable to run any of CS6 applications on 10.8 with a managed account. I’m using profiles via 10.8 server to manage my users. No matter how I structure the allowed path for applications, none of the CS6 applications will run. I get permissions errors related to the following programs:

    – adobe_licutil
    – CS6Service Manager
    – dynamiclinkmanager

Adobe chat support gave this gem:
Kulkarni: I am sorry to inform you that in order to run Adobe products, you need to have admin previlages to your account.
Kulkarni: In this case, you can create an local admin account in the shared systems on which you want to run the product. So that Adobe products runs fine.

Giving students admin accounts is a recipe for disaster!!!

Has anyone had success setting up CS6 / 10.8 in a lab environment using managed accounts? If not a solution, does anyone have any ideas?

    • By Pete Green - 4:19 PM on September 6, 2012   Reply

If you Always Allow those applications to run, can you run Photoshop on those systems alright?

Once I’ve allowed – adobe_licutil and CS6Service Manager to run Photoshop runs great on my managed systems.

      Is this a possibility?

I am running Photoshop CS5 on an iMac with Mountain Lion and get serious issues with pictures pixilating and shadow across them. Also, when I put text on them it vanishes if I try to move it, as if there are invisible layers!
I use dual screens, one is my iMac screen and the other an HD Cinema display. When I move the pics across to the cinema display all the pixilating vanishes, as does the shadowing effect and the text can be seen again!

    Any ideas?

    • By Pete Green - 12:04 PM on September 17, 2012   Reply

Good evening. I am running Photoshop CS5 Extended, version 12.0 x64 on Mountain Lion 10.8.1.

Every time I am editing an image .jpeg or .psd my mouse pointer disappears. It is VERY frustrating. The only way to get the pointer to reappear is to click on something outside of the program window. This happens a few times every minute and obviously elongates my editing time an unreasonable amount.

Please help me determine what can fix this.

    Thank you…

I have recently bought this machine running Mountain Lion:

    2.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
    2560 x 1440 resolution
    8GB memory
    1TB hard drive1
AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 512MB

The performance with Illustrator CS6 was so poor with screen lag that I returned the machine. It also had a soft grey bar along the bottom of the screen. Apple Care said that there was a hardware fault. The second iMac arrived – no improvement with Illustrator so I returned that one also. I can’t afford such an expensive computer that can’t run Adobe software efficiently. I am back on my 4 year old PC running Illustrator CS3 – it runs very well… but I must upgrade to CS6 for my business but it may have to be on a new PC now… I really did want to migrate to a Mac but… ??

Since I updated to Mountain Lion, I can’t open a file in Photoshop CS3 by launching Photoshop, Click File, Open… the Open screen appears, but when I click a folder to look for a file from, I get an Adobe Version Cue error: The operation could not be completed. There was a problem with the selected file or folder. It might have been moved, removed or deleted. Error Code -6640.

The folder exists, hasn’t been moved, removed or deleted. If I go into Finder and right click an image and select Open file with Photoshop, the file opens just fine. BUT If I try to save the file by selecting FIle, Save file as, I have the same problem as above.

This issue also affects Illustrator CS3. I’m essentially dead in the water at the moment. Any suggestions??

Have you installed all of the updates for CS3 and Version cue?
In photoshop or Bridge choose Help > Updates to launch the updater.

Also make sure you’ve run all of Mountain Lion’s updates so far. 10.8.2 is the latest.

AFter that, try running the permission repair from Disk Utility.
Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility

Illustrator CS5 now will not work on my Mac Pro running mountain lion 10.8.2. I’ve deleted the font cache using font doctor and the latest version of font nuke. Pete,
I am unable to get my CS3 premium suite to install on a 100% fresh install on 10.8 Mtn Lion.

I was able to get Updater to to finally work by setting my system clock back to 7/1/11.

However, even after following Adobe’s own help document on the issue, I cannot get the Illustrator 13.0.1 update to run. It starts and then gives me an immediate error that it can’t be applied to my product.

Adobe’s Help doc on the issue said to delete a file in the /Library/…./Installer folder. The file referenced did not exist in my directory so I did Option 2 which was to use the Adobe Uninstaller to remove Illustrator, then reinstall, and then run the update for 13.0.1 manually by downloading it from the Adobe site. I still got the same error.

Do you have any recommendations on how to proceed as Adobe’s official solutions did not work for this KNOWN ISSUE?

BTW – I’ve even gone as far as reinstalling the Mac OS twice and repeating all the mentioned steps to see if the issue was random. It is not. It fails every time.

Not seeking answers from here, rather contributing to the range of issues of what happens.

Lots of problems all round it seems from CS3 to CS6 with OS X 10.8 and also with MBP Retina.

For me it is CS3 Premium Suite – transferring files to new MBP retina, OSX 10.8 on transfer, then later running 10.8.2.

Using Migration assistant. Did not work. Talks about no longer licensed. I perhaps left some critical files behind in the main (master) library, as I initially only copied the user account and applications. Have since copied that other stuff, no difference.

Tried to reinstall from original disks, says it can not install, contact Adobe.

Wondering if CS3 just not compatible with 10.8.2 on retina MBP.

Interested to see that others have a problem as well, and with so many releases, and all in different ways at different points of installation or use.

So does one wait awhile or how does one problem solve such a diverse set of problems? Are there other web sites with good problem solving guidance or information that people know about?

Just tried Premiere CS4 (fresh install) on my Retina MBP. As the app was coming up I got a lot of “bonk, bonk, bonk…” sounds and then a bunch of “Mail Sent” whoosh sounds (but no sent mail). Console log lists a lot of “ERROR: looping synchronize attempt.”

After all that it seems to behave. Next time bringing it up no more bonks or whooshes.

So what the heck is all of that about? Any ideas?

    • By Pete Green - 8:44 AM on January 15, 2013   Reply

Could have been coincidence? Maybe another application was doing something at the same time as Premiere and the OS was chiming about it. Not sure what the exact cause was though — glad it is behaving!

    Hi, people.

I found this specific page while Googling for compatibility between Adobe and Mountain Lion because I wanted to keep updated on the OS, even though Snow Leopard is doing just fine and working nice with CS5.

The thing is, when Lion was out there, I asked the man that used to do maintenance to the iMacs at my old Design agency if I should and he said “Don’t do it!”. E said it had lots of issues and including (most important) issues with Adobe apps.

Now Mountain Lion is out, I have CS5 working fine on Snow Leopard but would like to get up to date again on my OS, if I knew everything would work properly…

So here it is. What do you guys recommend?! Should I stick with Snow Leopard or it is ok to go for Mountain Lion?! I really can’t afford to not be able to have CS5 work properly so… What do you think?!
Is it ok?! And is it worth it?!

    Thank you all in advance.

PS: I see so many people in trouble in this forum that I’m kind of scared, actually… :S

        Hey David,

You shouldn’t see any trouble with CS5 and Mountain Lion — I have both CS5 and 6 installed on my rMBP running ML.
Go ahead and give it a try — if you run into any adobe application trouble it can all be troubleshot, but I don’t expect that you will see trouble.
        Regards

I just migrated my system with Adobe CS4 to a new Macbook Pro w. retina display.

I migrated from Mac OS 10.6.8 to Mountain Lion.

Now I can’t open any files in CS4. I get the following message:

    Fatal error – missing component
    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Version Cue CS4/Client/4.0.0/VersionCue.framework

Should I just re-install CS4? I got all the updates. Thanks.

How large are the prints are you printing that are failing?

    it copied everything over.
All my CS4 programs have serious problems –

Photoshop CS4 (11.0.2) will run but when I open a file I get “/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Version Cue CS4/Client/4.0.0/VersionCue.framework” is missing, and then closes.

Dreamwever CS4 – “No document types have been found in the Configuration/DocumentTypes/ folder. The MMDocumentTypes.xml file may be missing or corrupted. The application will exit now.”

Fireworks CS4 (10.0.4.001) CS4 – “Fireworks can not run – An internal error occurred”

Flash CS4 (10.02) – “Error initializing Java Runtime Environment. You may need to reinstall Flash.”

Tried reinstalling all from the original disks –
    Tried Adobe Updater

Richard, did you try uninstalling before the reinstall?

I’d try an uninstall, before the reinstall. It sounds like some files or permissions may have been affected during the OS upgrade process.

      So 2 things.
      1. Try running Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and repair the disk permissions on your main hard drive.
      See if that helps

      2. Follow the instructions on this page to download the CreativeSuite Cleaner tool, and run this after the uninstall of CS4 (as instructed on the page), then reinstall CS4. http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html

    Hi Pete

Recently moved from Windows 7 PC to Mac.
First time using Photoshop since the move, when I go to Print, there are no dialogue boxes to enter the paper type or the printer requirements (Best, Draft, etc.). The HP paper ICC profiles are in MacIntosh>Library>Printers>HP>Profiles>Photosmart….is there a flag somewhere that I have to turn on to ensure the Printing process takes into account the fact that I want to use the ICC profiles? The tests I conducted come out very muddy looking, poor colour and no vibrance.
I went to the HP site for the latest Drivers, but it referred me to Apple. Tried the Software Updates, but it said all software was up-to-date.
Never had this problem on the PC!!
    Thanks, John

      Hi John,

When you print on the Mac, the print dialog boxes are a bit different since they’re generated by the OS.

So when you go to print from Photoshop, be sure to click on the “Print Settings” button, then on the next dialog, click “Show Details”.
Depending on your printer you’ll have different drop down menu options, but on mine it’s called “Media and Quality” (Or sometimes called “Paper Handling”) — Here you can select Paper Size, and Paper Type.
Click Save/OK, then click “Print” — this will bring up the same dialog, and your settings should be applied. Double-check them, then click Print to begin the print.

Let us know if this helps

To open “Adobe Photoshop CS5.1,” you need to install a Java SE 6 runtime. Would you like to check for and install one?

    The software is currently unavailable.
To install a Java SE 6 runtime later, open “Adobe Photoshop CS5.1” again.

I keep receiving this message when I try to open either photoshop or indesign. Whenever I click on ‘install’ it just goes to the second message and then disappears.

It’s obviously a settings issue as it always starts to upload before defaulting to this message. When I install Java directly from the developer the computer doesn’t recognise it although it superficially appears to upload it – it doesn’t exist when I search for it or look under Java in settings. This has only happened since uploading Mountain Lion.

I have a new MacBook Pro (not Retina Display) I installed Mountain Lion and have CS4. I have problems with printing from an open file with InDesign or Illustrator. If I create a pdf and open that, then I can print it.
I checked if my printer has an updated driver, it does not.
If I already have InDesign open and try to open another file in it, nothing opens. The file looks like its open, but there’s nothing there. When I open InDesign and then click File>New>Document…fill it out and open: Nothing happens. A new document doesn’t open.
Also, been having problems with InDesign and the palettes like, Character, Paragraph, Swatches, seem to freeze. I can’t move them or use them.
I restored my preferences in Photoshop. Seemed to help it. Still can’t drag a layer into trashcan without it crashing. Is there something I can do for InDesign and Illustrator?

installed OSX MLion. Prior to that I looked here and read this at the top (the last sentence)

…”earlier software were also tested and there are currently no known issues.” Which should include ADOBE CS2 – – yes, yes, I’m a dinosaur. But it works for what I’m doing and as a designer who worked for a California State University not too far south of your HQ, and got used to being provided with each and every upgrade in-step without personal financial cost, I have to take what I can get.

However … the error “you can’t open “Adobe Illustrator CS2.app” bercause PowerPc applications are no longer supported” is odd.
Firstly because of the disclaimer I read prior to installation, and secondly because I’m running an Intel Core Duo iMac

any assistance or help would be very cool. At least I can get the $ up for a newer CS. Kids in college kind of throw you for a loop, financially.

Initially installed Adobe master collection CS4 on OSX mountain lion, the installation completed without the installation of Flash CS4. Installation of the update was also broken. That is the update kept on terminating before it could the applied. Exporting from Adobe Illustrator to PNG format was generating an unknown error as well.

Formatted and reinstalled the mac OS. Then reinstalled Adobe master collection, now all installed completely except that the update is still broken.

The Problem with Adobe and other old software that is continuously crashing is that they are 32 bit applications that we are trying to run in a 64bit environment which are calling invalid memory addresses.

With Snow Leopard came the beginning of Apple’s 64bit road paving; Though it originally would boot in 32bit mode and offered Rosetta support, gone now is the tolerance of 32bit applications which are treated like low class trash in Apples totalitarian world.

If vendors won’t comply, the apps will die.

Since Adobe has moved way past CS … CS3 I really don’t think they are concerned with fixing older versions to run on the latest 64bit only operating systems from Apple and Apple really doesn’t care if our older software will work either.

They are paving ‘Their’ way and both Apple and Adobe’s logic is for us all to Upgrade or be kicked to the curb.

Moral of the story is if you want your Professional tools to work, you have to Buy the latest versions that were extensively designed to work with later iterations of Appledom. (the current realm of Apple’s regime.)

    …EXAMPLE Copied from above post…

    Process: Adobe Illustrator [380]
    Path: /Applications/Adobe Illustrator CS3/Adobe Illustrator.app/Contents/MacOS/Adobe Illustrator
    Identifier: com.adobe.illustrator
    Version: 13.0.2 (13.0.2)
    >>> Code Type: X86 (Native) <<<

    Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x000000000a9b5000

TO UPGRADE, OR NOT; THAT IS THE QUESTION.
Keep running older versions of both the OS and Adobe wares or Upgrade them both via wiping your drive and a fresh install. (Don't forget to Backup your documents & work first!)

These are the pitfalls of vendor forced upgrades.

      Hi Robert,

While it’s not recommended to run older versions on newer OSes and hardware, I think you’re making some bad assumptions about the nature of the crash log you have posted. It may not have anything to do with running a 32bit app on a 64bit OS. Without the rest of the crash log, and possibly symbols, it’s not possible to identify the root cause of the crash snippet you’ve posted above (which may be a crash in AI or possibly even the OS layer).

I’d need someone from the AI team look at the Crash Log, but from what I can tell it’s crashing in OS code.

    Hi,

I have OS 10.8.4 and am using Adobe reader 11.0.3, to save files as a PDF- however they default to web archive files. When saving to PDF from the drop down in the print menu it saves a blank document. Previously I was able to right click on a document and save as PDF in adobe but no longer. this should be a strait forward operation. Please advise. Cheers

I have been using Photoshop CS3 since I have had my Mac running OS X Version 10.8.4

Last time I was able to open Photoshop was yesterday. This am after starting up my computer. Trying to open up photoshop I received this error.

Check with the developer to make sure Adobe Photoshop CS3 works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application.

I have not had any issues prior to today, nor have I installed any updates/photoshop or otherwise.

I downloaded the ps1001.dmg a photoshop CS3 update, however it fails before installing.
I also went into my library folder and deleted “com.apple.LaunchServices.plist”

    Nothing seems to be working.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Charles

I’m running Mountain Lion now after a suggested upgrade. My Photoshop 8 now sends message that some plug-ins won’t work. Sure enough, all the plugins in the drop down menu bar for making photos reverse B&W, negative, yellow tint, red filter, infrared etc. are no longer available. Also, shadows and effects are not available either. Is there a fix?

    correction:It’s Photoshop Elements 8

      Hi Allan,

Sorry for the trouble — You could try resetting the preferences on PSE8 to see if something happened during the upgrade.

      To reset the preferences:
Quit the editor then restart it while immediately holding down CMD+OPT+Shift.

Keep the keys down till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.

In order for this to work you must either start the editor from the button in the welcome screen or by double-clicking the elements editor application file directly.

If that alone doesn’t fix it, try the suggestions here: http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/pse-mac-upgrade-mountain-lion-issues.html

Let us know how you get on.
      Regards

    Hi Pete,

I just bought a new iMac 10.8.3, but I have an older version of Photoshop, CS3. I don’t want to upgrade if I don’t have to. I am unclear on whether cs3 will work on my new iMac. Can you clarify? Thanks!

What a great blog and help site, Pete! I’m excited to discover this.

I have CS4, originally stalled on my mid-2009 MacBookPro running OS 10.5.8 Leopard, still working well. I only use Photoshop and Acrobat Pro 9 from the suite.

Then I got a late 2010 MacBookAir with 10.6 Snow Leopard, and I think I copied CS4 over and initially it would not launch. If I recall correctly, I talked to Adobe and they gave me a new installation code or something to get it to work, and/or maybe they had me uninstall and do a clean install first, I don’t remember for sure. But it has worked ok on that machine since then too.

I don’t upgrade OS’s on my Macs anymore because it almost always causes headaches, mostly with the installed software, and same for migrating software from an old machine to a new one rather than doing clean insatalls.

A year ago I bought a late 2012 MacMini with 10.8 Mountain Lion. Adobe’s website at the time said CS4 would not work in Lion and Mountain Lion. I could not afford to upgrade to CS6, so I just shelled out the $100 for Elements 11 so I could at least do some photo-editing, but I find it a bit limited, such as it won’t even tell me what colorspace a file is using. I also really need to make some PDFs. But I can’t afford $30 a month for a year for CC and then who knows how much it will be after a year.

It seems from what I’ve read above that now Adobe says there is no problem whatsoever with CS4 running on Mountain Lion – – Despite all the problems people are actually reporting here, it seems like you almost always succeed in fixing the issue and a lot of the time it has to do with people copying the software from a previous machine or through an OS update, rather than doing clean installs. Or resetting permissions. That sounds promising.

So I may have wasted $100 on Elements, but if CS4 will now work on the Mini, I prefer that to paying $360 per year or more to rent two programs for occassional personal use, even if they would be new and improved versions.

    So, my questions are:
    1) It sounds like I can just do a clean install of CS4 onto the 2012 Mini with Mountain Lion and be able to run Photoshop and Acrobat Pro? Please confirm.

    2) I still have to use the old MacBookPRO because my Nikon film scanner won’t work on newer OS’s, and I still use the AIR when I travel as well. At home, the three machines are on the same wireless network (on different floors of my house), but I only need to run PS or Acrobat on one machine at a time. More and more the Mini is becoming my main machine, because it has 2 TB of storage and 16 GB of RAM internally, and drives two large screens and an external RAID. Will I need any new installation code or license to get CS4 to run on the Mini?

    3) I am also interested in adding Lightroom to the mix since I can still buy rather than rent that – maybe it is all I really need for most of my processing, I don’t know. Will Lightroom 5 be able to work with Photoshop CS4 and vice versa, or do I need to get an older version of Lightroom to be compatible?

I hope CS4 and Lightroom 5 will all work together on all of these machines/operating systems. That would be ideal. I’m really looking forward to your answers.

    Thank you very much,
    Mike

      1) Yes. (for CS4 for sure) I’m not an Acrobat guy, but I would assume if the version of Acrobat you have is of the same vintage of CS4 it should be fine.
      2) Probably not. Try it.
      3) CS4 with work with Lightroom 5, but you will need to use the option of exporting with settings applied as a TIFF to do further edits in PS CS4.

You mention $360 a year to rent. Just making sure you knew that you could get PS and LR for $9.99 a month: https://creative.adobe.com/plans/offer/photoshop+lightroom?sdid=KIHZP

Note that both apps require OS 10.7 or later.

I just bought a new Mac Mini with OS 10.8.3 (Mountain Lion). I’ll need to update my creative suite.
Will creative suite 5.5 work with 10.8.3? Does anyone have personal experience using these two together?
