Windows 8 and Photoshop

We’re happy to announce that Photoshop CS6, Lightroom 4 and Elements 11 are compatible with Microsoft Windows 8.

The only issue customers might see is with document window transparency/flickering in Photoshop CS6 caused by video drivers. The drivers that ship with Windows 8 may not be the most recent available from the card vendors. See here to resolve this issue.

I recommend that customers make sure they have the lastest drivers from either AMD or nVidia. If you still have problems with the latest drivers, try setting the Advanced Settings for OpenGL Drawing/Graphic Card Processing in the Photoshop’s Preferences>Performance… dialog so that Drawing Mode is set to “Basic.”

Instructions for updating drivers and troubleshooting settings can be found here.

Are there plans to update CS to be compatible with W8 Metro (aka tile shell interface) as opposed to launching as a desktop application?

From what I understand about Windows Metro, apps have to be available for sale on the Windows app store. Unless Adobe makes the suite available on the store, there will probably not be a native metro version. I could be mistaken.

We’re excited by the possibilities that Windows Metro applications provide but don’t have any specific news around native Metro applications at this time. Stay tuned to the Photoshop.com blog for any future news or announcements.

Probably not the most appropriate place to ask this, but what about the rest of CS6? I have the master collection, and would hate to upgrade to W8 before the whole suite supports it.

Also the link above to “Creative Suite FAQ: Microsoft Windows 8 Compatibility” seems to point to a non-existent anchor… nothing about W8 on the page as far as I can see.

Hmm. The link is working here for me on multiple browsers. What happens if you hold the shift key to force reload the page and kill the cache?

Well obviously, every Photoshop cs6 3d features still bugs with amd drivers for windows 8, one year later…. If you and others want to lobby for amd to effectivly fix this you can ask it there : @CatalystCreator directly to the amd/ati drivers lead developper. Don’t hesitate because 1 year for support, is a shame for amd professionnal owners.

        I could not agree more.

The rest of CS6 is fine as well. The FAQ covers it.

Why would you want to upgrade to Windows 8? Seven is shite, and I see no reason to believe 8 is any better. Computers are reduced to not much more than toys with 7, and two machines at my place of work would be unusable with it. One is connected to a CNC machine and couldn’t run the software, neither would it network to the machine. If MS cease support for XP our business would suffer.

You’re an idiot. I see no reason to believe that it’s worse. What kind of moron bad mouths something before doing some research into it!?

At the very least try it.

I have to agree with Lee. Ever since at least Windows XP and probably before, these OS versions have been nothing but superficial interface changes with just enough alternation to make software that could last many years, executable “legacy” programs. To me, they are just trying to satisfy what people they think people want it to look like, change the OS enough to require new software (marketing obsolescence) and create very little practical application improvements at all.

I’m not too sure if apps have to be exactly published in the Microsoft store in order to have a native Metro version. For example, the latest release of Google Chrome has added a Metro version of the app without purchasing from the Microsoft Store–it installs side by side with the desktop app. It would be nice to have at least Live Metro UI icons to the already released versions of the CS6 Suites. Just something I’ve observed since Windows 8’s release. Hope this helps a bit. Photoshop CS6 is running magnificent on Windows 8!

Christopher, glad to hear. I have to say, Microsoft did a good job at legacy version support. If an app can run in Windows 7 it can run fine in Windows 8.

Do you know when Adobe After Effects CS6 will be compatible with Windows 8?

i had problem with document window transparancy . I resolved it . thanks

Now if you can just make Photoshop CS6 compatible with Photoshop CS6 you’ll have something.

Particillary bad are the options added to Photoshop with the adjustment panel . What is particularly bad is Adobe tried to make these options global and not just be in effect when the adjustment panel is used to add an adjustment layer.

In the past adjustment layer always came with a Layer Mask it was never an option no action was required nothing needed to be coded to have a layer mask added and nothing was recorded into action steps or scripts that there was be or not to be a layer mask. So any Action, Script and possibly Plug-in that added and adjustment layer and modified its layer mask will fail. If this option is not set to its default setting. Even if you change the setting Photoshop does not always not add a layer mask. If there is an active selection a layer mask will still be added. So the option does not work always.

The second option clip to previous layer has always been an option and if used the option was recorded in actions and coder in scripts and plug ins. However nothing special was recoded or coded if you wanted the adjustment layer to apply to all layer below the adjustment was added by default not clipped. When this option is in its default state it does not, not clip adjustment layers that were recorded clipped or coded clipped these are still clipped. However if you set it to Clip added adjustment recorded in actions that should be added by default not clipped are now clipped. This may also happen in Plug in and scripts that coded add adjustment layers letting it default to all these may be clipped.

Here are some simple silly actions I recorded with CS6 that adds adjustment layers which are played with in the actions. Versions of Photoshop prior to CS4 will have no problems for these bad options were added in CS4. CS4, CS5 and CS6 will play the action when these options are set to their default setting. The Actions will have problems otherwise.http://www.mouseprints.net/old/dpr/AdjustmentLayers.atn No document need be open just play the actions with options set to their default setting. Then change an option and play again.

    Hi John.

I’m not sure I’m understanding the problem, I downloaded your action file and ran all 3 actions and each one seemed to perform as the action tells it to.
What is not happening for you? Have you updated to 13.0.1. yet?

Adjustment layers always have and still come with a layer mask either by using the adjustment panel, or by adding via layer’s panel or through menu.

No layer when you add it comes in already clipped. To clip a layer to another layer you need to hold Option and click on the border between the two layers.
What settings are you changing that cause the actions to fail?

I’m planning on buying a new Asus 11.6″ Intel i3,4gb,64bit,500gb hard drive with Windows 8 installed. Would like to know if Adobe CS5 will install on this computer.

I can’t say anything about installing CS5 on Windows 8, but I upgraded a Windows 7 system with CS5 and Lightroom 3.6 and they both continue to work fine. I’m sure it isn’t a supported configuration if that is a consideration.

None of my blending modes work in CS6.

Tks. The tip on how to stop Photoshop flickerings on W8 solved our trouble. Very useful.

I’m having no trouble with CS6 and Lightroom 4 on Windows 8. However, I’m really suffering when I try to use Bridge. It is remarkably slow, and at times hangs with “Not Responding”. Is this a known problem, or any ideas on how I could solve the problem?

Hi George, do you have all the updated for Bridge installed?

Thanks for the suggestion, Jeffrey. I downloaded the latest updates for Bridge and CS6 but I get the same results. Since I am the only one who seems to have this problem my suspicions are that I’ve got some setting wrong somewhere. I’ll try to hunt it down.

Are they f… heck!

If it’s all so compatible why the hell are all of my applications failing to install from Creative Cloud using the install manager?

ah scratch that – I retried and the applications installed second time around. Not sure why there’s a difference but I’ll take it.

I upgraded to a new PC with Windows 8. LR4 is installed. I cannot see the photos. Everything is just a gray screen. You can see the image names/numbers but no image. Can anyone help me? Thank you.

Is your Lightroom updated to 4.2? Have you tried updating your drivers at the nVidia or AMD websites?

I am also seeing this issue of flickering. More info posted here on this forum post: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1102444

Hi there…i installed PS CS6 on my 2 PC’s which are running Windows 8 and PS just minimizes and i can’t use it normally on both PC’s…

You may need to go upgrade your video card driver – Make sure it is up to date with the latest version from the manufacturer’s website.

If that doesn’t fix, and it should.. Please post the issue with as much detail as you can here: http://phtshp.us/AskAQuestion

I upgraded to LR4 from LR3 then upgraded from Win 7 to Win 8. Ever since I went to Win 8 I cannot export NEF or TIFF files to a compressed jpeg using the export wizard. I get a “FILE CANNOT BE WRITTEN” error. I can export full-size or the 100mb size for email, but nothing in-between. Running LR 4.2 Anyone got an idea?

I have not heard of this. I suspect a permissions problem. I’d try running Lightroom in a new Admin user account. Post more details here so we can help: http://phtshp.us/report_a_problem

I also can not export DNG files to JPG files porperly on Windows 8. Get message that Lightroom 4.3 could not export the files – it actually did, but not to the 5mb limit I wanted. Trid with Lightroom 4.2, with same result. This was all on my 64 bit computer. Tried the export with LR 4.3 on my laptop with Windows 7, and no problem. Talked to a friend who tried it with a 64 bit machine and windows 7 and that worked OK. Thus, problem appears to be compatibility with Windows 8.

I just replaced my PC with a new one and so have been forced to go from Windows 7 to Windows 8. Now I need to know which of my current software requires an upgrade. Are any of these Adobe products compatible with Windows 8?

Lightroom 3
Photoshop Elements 8
Adobe Premiere Pro CS4

Thanks,

Ken

Lightroom and Elements should be. Not sure about Premiere Pro. You can ask Premiere Questions here: http://forums.adobe.com/community/premiere

cant get my photoshop elements 8 to install on my new laptop with windows 8. It runs intill it gets to “installing adobe air” then just stops

    any help would be nice

Hello, good morning

I downloaded Adobe Photoshop CS6, and can not install on my windows 8, can someone help me?

Dear webclients,

You talks about compatibility between W8 and Adobe products !!! Ha ! ha! ha!

I’ve bought a Personal Computer by Packard Bell because it was composed by Adobe products (PSE, Reader, …) Under Windows SEVEN START !

But a technical problem occured and the technicien who repairs my computer put W8 !!!!

Ha ! Ha ! Ha ! Never never ! PSE (Photoshop Edition 8) and others products by Adobe are OUT !

CHIN CHIN !!!

Since when did Win 7 run apps, never. Win 8 RT is the first version to run apps. Also apps are not the same as Programs that run on previous versions of Windows. CS6 will never run in Metro. A CS6 app like the Android version which is a very minor version of the full program could run in Metro and probably will one day.

hello: I just upgrade mi pc (new one) but have windows8 now I can’t use my adobe photoshop elements 8, so everything I have I’m gonna lost because I cant see any pic . there its not any upgrade for the photoshop8 for wind8?? just because I understand better the element8 .
Thanks

There is a discounted upgrade to Elements 11 that was developed and tested to run on Windows 8.

I have been using Photoshop CS3 on my Windows 7 without any problem, but my computer is being replaced with one that has Windows 8. Will CS3 work on Windows 8?
Thanks,

I haven’t tried CS3 personally on Win 8. I do know CS4 and up run fine on Win 8. My guess is CS3 will run fine.

Does Photoshop (in CS 5.5 or CS 6) work well on a Windows 8 (64-bit) operating system? Also, does Adobe Photoshop work with the Touch-Screen functions in Windows 8?

CS5 and CS6 run fine on Windows 8, but are not optimized for touch screen. (It’s something that’s on our radar)

I currently bought a Lenovo touch screen PC and updated to Windows 8. one of the main reasons why I bought this computer was because of the touch screen features hoping that PS CS6 would be compatible and I could work off my screen. Are there any plans on Adobe’s end to make this happen?

We are looking into it but I cannot comment on future software updates

I am using Photoshop cs6 extended on Asus laptop G75v my system information is:

-Windows 8
-17 inch screen LED
-16GB Ram
-Gforce Nvida 3GB display card
-Intel Core i7 processor
-64 bit system
-240 GB SSD hard disk as primary

My issue is when i open an image in Photoshop the colors are different than windows explorer photos, its more saturated. I changed the color sitting in Photoshop to monitor colors the colors went to normal and the problem fixed. but when i open an image in camera raw or when i use any filter software like topaz or nik software, again the colors got saturated, I did change the color sittings in camera raw and tried all color sittings, still the same problem will show with the saturated colors. I have also checked my graphic card monitor calibration as it is normal. i had no issue with my previous Toshiba laptop as am shooting with canon 60d in Raw and the camera color sitting is set to sRGB. is it from windows 8 compatibility or an issue with Photoshop sittings?

On Windows 8 please run your installers as Admin and also the apps later on, this solves a lot of issues

Is Photoshop CS6 now fully compatible with touchscreen on windows 8 I noticed only one posting on this subject

We are looking into it but I cannot comment on future software updates

New computer with Windows 8 64-Bit. Installed CS4. I can open photos fine. When I try to perform a task — the first case was trying to crop a photo — I can set the crop but when I press enter, no response. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Bob

Is the enter key not working with other operations? (e.g. committing a layer rename)

Post more details on the Photoshop forum, we can help you there: http://adobe.ly/PS-U2U

I think my problem may have something to do with Windows 8 compatibility but I’m not positive…

When zooming in and out while editing a photo in ps6, the image will sometimes change and become drastically more saturated and contrasty… if I zoom in and out a few more times it will return to normal. This same type of thing is happening when I add an adjustment layer. Say I add an adjustment layer and I start bringing the far right (whites) slider in… as I do this, the image will “flicker” and intermittently show the changes I know to be true and changes where (again) it will add unnatural contrast and saturation for a brief moment.

I just upgraded to cs6 from pse9. I’ve been running pse9 on Windows 8 for about a month now and have never had this problem there. Any help would be great, this is driving me mad!

Hi, I am thinking about getting a new laptop, the sony vaio e series. I already have adobe photoshop elements 9. Will it work on the laptop?? with windows 8???

I really don’t want to get a new adobe photoshop as Im a highschooler and barley able to afford the laptop!! PLEASE HELP!?!?!?

Photoshop won’t even open on my screen. I click it and nothing happens. It worked perfectly fine that same day until I just bought Windows 8 later that day. It never worked again. Reinstall didn’t work either.

Hi,
Photoshop has issues with AMD graphics card. It goes all blinking and stuff. I’d like to refer you all to a forum post name “Photoshop CS6, Windows 8 and crazy GPU behavior”

http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1089620?start=40&tstart=0

Any ideas, thoughts or info will be very welcomed

Thanks

Have you tried setting Advanced Drawing to “Basic”?

i posted it earlier, every Photoshop cs6 3d features still bugs with amd drivers for windows 8 one year later…. desactivating advanced 3D features is NOT a solution.

If you and others want to lobby for amd to effectivly fix this you can ask it there : @CatalystCreator directly to the amd/ati drivers lead developper. Don’t hesitate cause 1 year for fixing this, is a real shame.

You can try disabling Vertical Sync directly in the driver.

I tried downloading photoshop to my windows 8 laptop, but im getting this issues where it starts working fine then suddenly it stops working. This is not a cheap software you know, it costs a lot but I havent checked my card, i dont know hot to. In my other laptop I didn’t had this issue, i was able to create the tranparent png with no problem, you can check it on this website: http://www.distancecalling.com. But when I try to create a png transparent on my windows 8, it stops working and i get some error messsage, please help

Good Day.

Please advise if Adobe Creative Suite Design Standard CS5 is compatible with Windows 8 Pro ? We experiencing a lot of crashes of were the program just close on you.

You forget to mention to close Photoshop and restart. Not sure that would do it but I shut down completely and restarted. All is well.

I just purchased a Lenovo Yoga 13 touchscreen. When using PhotoShop, I can select everything fine with the touchscreen, but I cannot draw anything on the file I am working on. I can draw in the gray area outside of the image and move it into the image, but cannot seem to draw on the actual image. Any advice?

Same here… I think it is a known problem that they are debating fixing or not.

From what I’ve read it seems to be many if not all touchscreens. Hope the debate leads to a “yes” they will fix it. Ridiculous to not be able to use the touchscreen with CS6 when in previous versions you could.

Please advise if Adobe Creative Suite Design Standard CS5 is compatible with Windows 8 ??

I have CS6 running on Win8 pro and as of today I can’t get photoshop to open or create new files. It’s been working past few weeks though. I have tried rebooting at least 5 times and deleted my settings file (CTRL+SHIFT+ALT when starting). Nothing works. The cloud app says it is up to date. What else can I try?

Ron

BTW, I am running a GeForce GTX 560M and was running the latest released driver. After posting the above I tried installing their latest beta driver and got same results. Is there a log file somewhere I can check?

Hey there,

I am trying to install my CS4 extended onto my new HP (with 64-bit Windows 8) and can’t get past the Initialization screen. It says “checking system profile”, but stops at around 90% completion. I looked around on the internet, and was actually able to find people with the same problem back in 2008 and 2009. I tried their troubleshooting suggestions (install as administrator, etc) with no luck and was hoping to get a more relevant answer. Does anyone know what I can do to successfully install this software? Thanks!

Is printshop 22 compatible in windows 8

Hi,
I am new to this site,I just did an upgrade from windows vista to windows 8, all is working fine except my photoshop elements 11. My pictures are fine but videos play sound but no picture, it all worked well before any ideas?

Came to this thread to figure out what PS to buy for my new windows 8 idea pad. Jeffrey, you must be a saint.

i have adobe photoshop cs6 and my driver is a g41 express chipset from intel and it keeps saying that they arent compatible and it freezes when i try to open a picture. Please help!

Hi there, another person with a new PC with a Windows 8 OS having trouble with PhotoshopCS. I have an HP Envy desktop with an AMD Radeon HD7570 graphics card. My problem is that no matter how I install CS4 or update my video drivers or anything else, my CS4 runs in 8 bit mode. My photos look horrible. With undersaturated color and very low quality. In any other photo viewing/editing program my photos look normal. High quality with great saturation, so it’s just PS. Any ideas on a real and effective way to get PS to run in 32bit or 64bit mode on my PC? I can’t use it in 8 bit mode. It’s ruining my photos. ( By the way, this thread isn’t exactly making me confident in buying CS6 with my new Windows 8 PC. Looks like half the people here can’t get it to work.)

I am upgrading my operating system and am at the decision point between Windows 7 and Windows 8. Looking for thumbs up / down on either as they relate to running LR-4 and PSE-11.

I am nervous about going to Windows 8.

Thoughts?

I would stay away from windows 8 if you have to run PS for any professional work environment. There are obviously several vendors who have to catch up with driver updates in order to make things function together. And perhaphs wimdows needs to install a major patch, or two. Stick with windows 7 and your choice of PS.

I updated my graphics driver. Besides the flickering which is already dealt with, my healing brush is not working properly. When I drag, only dollops are set down spaced far apart. I am new to windows 8. my graphics driver is an AMD Radeon 7800 series. My computer is DELLXPS (if that makes a difference) Any suggestions?

What’s your input device? Are you using a mouse? Tablet? My guess is there’s a flakey device driver.

Thanks Jeffrey, I updated my Intus 4 driver to the latest windows 8. I also tried my mouse with the same problem. What other device driver may be the problem. I have no problem on my laptop with Windows 7

Hello, good morning
Is printshop 22 compatible in windows 8

Windows 8 is absolute C**p. Do these programmers have to have documented stupidity, or can they simply act stupid enough at there interview? I have so many issues with it I can’t see straight. Right now my big issue is that I cannot get Adobe 6 Standard to load its port monitor and as a result I cannot print pdfs. Anyone have a fix?

You know that we will be saddled with W8in the next year. My best guess is it will cut productivity in half.

At least he didn’t drop it on the dog!

anyone know if Photoshop and InDesign parts of CS 5.5 will operate on Windows 8?

Photoshop should be fine. I’d ask about InDesign on their forum.

Thanks for this glorious article. One other thing is that almost all digital cameras are available equipped with a zoom lens that enables more or less of your scene to generally be included by simply ‘zooming’ in and out. Most of these changes in the aim length are usually reflected in the viewfinder and on substantial display screen right at the back of any camera.

I bought elements 10 and waited until I bought a new machine to download.

Now I am not happy that I can not download to my new machine that has windows 8. what do you suggest I do?

There must be an update to elements 11 for $2.00?

Please send me the url address for the $2.00 update.

please advise

Brian Fox

I am a photographer using Lightroom 3 and Photoshop Elements 9. I just upgraded to a Dell Inspiron 660 with windows 8. The PC will not run the apps with my current Monitor since the resolution is too low. So must upgrade monitor. It was suggested I needed a better graphics card with windows 8 or should I upgrade to Lightroom 4 and PSE11 to be compatible with windows 8? Please advise do I need a better Nvidia graphics card and higher resolution monitor. Or just the higher resolution monitor and update to Lightroom 4 or Elements 11? Thank you for advise

Any advice?

nice articel

i cannot get photoshop to instsll on my toshiba satalite pro windows 8 cuz it tells me to restart, after which when i try to install a screen pops up saying initializer failded to install

I have Windows 8 and Photoshop 6. I use Actions with shortcode very often, but with my Lenovo laptop it won’t work.

Any idea how to solve this? For example I use an action with the F2 button, but it only shows the speakers.
