Free Version of Adobe Revel Now Available

A little over a year ago we shipped Revel 1.0. In that time, we have learned so much about you and what you want from a photo app like Revel. One of the things we heard loud and clear was that a lot of you loved Revel, but you really wanted a free version of the app. There’s an old adage in show business to give the audience what they want, and that is exactly what we are doing today.

Here is a summary of the changes we are making to Revel:

  • We are eliminating the 30-day trial and replacing it with a free version of Revel that you can use for as long as you like.
  • You can still upgrade to Revel Premium as an in-app purchase in the Revel App.

With the free version of Revel you get:

  • The ability to import as many photos as you want in the first 30 days
  • After that you can import up to 50 photos every month

With Revel Premium you get:

  • Unlimited photo import for US$5.99 per month – import as many photos as you want, anytime you want
  • The ability to automatically import new photos added to the Camera Roll on your iPhone and iPad

Revel still lets you:

  • Access your photos almost anywhere you go
  • Back-up your photos to the cloud
  • Organize, edit, and share all the photos you have
  • Share beautiful web galleries that update automatically

We want to build the perfect photo app/service for you, and we think these changes are a big first step toward doing just that. Over the coming months, we’ll be paying very close attention to how many photos people are importing, and we’ll be fine-tuning the limits in the free version of Revel to make them as generous as possible.

Hopefully most of your questions have been answered in this blog post, but if you have any additional questions check out the FAQ or ask a question on our Get Satisfaction help and support page.

If you are new to Revel, please download the app from iTunes or the Mac App Store and give it a try. We think you’ll love it!

Fantastic App

This is fantastic news! I love the concept of Revel, but just couldn’t swing one more online subscription. I will definitely be using it again. I would upgrade to Premium if you could just add some pretty basic features.

First of all, it seems crazy to me that there is no support for keywords. This is basic, and crucial, especially as people collect more and more photos. Right now, there isn’t a good way to keyword your photos on iOS. You would dominate this space.

Second, I would really like the ability for custom sort orders as in Lightroom for building albums. Chronological order is not how I always want to build photo stories.

Finally, while I’m glad there are now captions (there weren’t the last time I used the apps), I really dislike the way the captions are displayed over the image by default. If you look at other apps that present photos, you will notice that the captions are off by default, but you can invoke them with a tap. This is how it should be. Some sort of slide show mode would also be useful for showing photos on the device.

Making the app free is a great business decision. You’ve brought me back into the fold, along with what will doubtless be thousands of others. Great timing too, with the changes in the Instagram TOS, people are looking for other options. The “Fremium” model has worked well for Evernote, Dropbox, many others, and I have a feeling it will do well for you too.

I tried Revel, but had to give up on it. I’ll try it again when 2 things occur.

1) I have my galleries setup in Smugmug. To get those galleries synced to Revel, I need Lightroom to be updated so that I can create smart collections where I can explicitly name the collection to copy the files. Currently selecting on collection Our Dogs will split those two words into separate searches and gather photos from multiple collections.

2). Need Revel to display photos without an Internet connection. I want my photos synced to me iPad for viewing and go to the web when I request a sync. If I’m somewhere there is no service, the photos are not displayed.

It was cool how photos automatically appeared.

Keep up the good work and continue moving forward.

Que lindo cara! Que atitude!

While this feature may increase the popularity of Revel, I firmly believe that making Revel compatible with Lightroom (which would include being able to store, display and edit RAW files, to share a library with Lightroom, to tag and use Lightroom keywords and to efficiently organize pictures – all those features that lack on the actual Revel) would bring a lot more customers. You could make those features only available for Creative Cloud members, or charge a higher “Pro” rate for it, but we definitely need a way to access and work with Lightroom on the go and Revel is the perfect concept to do that.

S.

I use the free version now together with the LR4 Export Service. Very cool. Thank you.

    You’re welcome!

Wonderful if you know how to give the public what they want … Thanks for making free access Revel.

And Android does not have something similar, it’s not ungrateful, I congratulate you for being so charitable, but it would be great to enjoy it even more Android also.

Cool! I’ll give up with iPhoto and I’m uploading my whole photo library to Adobe Revel right now!

I think sharing capabilities (Facebook, Twitter, …) could be improved in the Mac app, and to zoom over a picture would be great also. Now, you can see an individual photo, but you can’t (or I don’t know how) zoom to a concrete part of the picture.

Thank you for this fantastic initiative!

    Great to hear!

Thanks for the feedback on the Mac version of Revel. Improving the sharing capabilities on the Mac is on the roadmap but we aren’t sure when we are going to release these improvements.

To zoom in on a photo you have to go into editing mode. You can use “command +” to zoom in and “command – ” to zoom out.

Let us know if you have any other comments or questions!

i have just about had it searching the web…i would like a program where i can make my own themes for my computer…..edit some family photos for my personal use…plus add a few little do dads to it all.

will someone please tell me what would be the most suitable. i a not handcuffed to this computer i do have a life albeit without a family now [of course there is Sally my dog] so i would prefer it to be ‘user friendly”

~peace be with you~

all help gratefully accepted & recognised.

perfect news.thx.

I think the Fremium business model is a good move for Revel.
However, to add more appeal to the app, I would like to see some of the features enhanced.
For example, I personally (and maybe others as well) would appreciate a slide show function that would allow me to present my photos in a more sophisticated way.
I am sure you guys will work very hard on further improving the app and I am looking forward to seeing the changes you will make in the months to come.

Thanks for the feedback. While not exactly what you are looking for, you can play a slideshow in a shared albums on AdobeRevel.com.

To launch a slideshow in a shared album, navigate to the shared library on AdobRevel.com and click the play button in the top right.

Please keep the feedback coming as we are always looking for ways to make the app and service better.

      Dear Chris,

Thank you very much for that tip.

It’s great to know that my feedback was appreciated.

I am a Luddite and still in the 20th century. I have Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.2 which does all I ever want it to do. It has my many photos on call, I can email copies, print them, etc. I am not a creative photographer, just your ordinary point-and-shoot regular guy.

This Revel business totally confuses me. I have a cell-phone which I use only as an emergency when I’m away from the house. It’s old and I don’t know if it has a camera in it. I don’t have or will ever need ipads, macs and all this electronic stuff, so I have no need to download to these things. I don’t do Facebook, Twitter or any of these media things.

However, Adobe Photoshop has asked me to transfer to Revel. I clicked on archive to archive my photos and nothing happened. All I have is an icon on my desktop labelled pscom_library with nothing in it.

Please advise me in simple language I will understand.

Hi, I think your blog may be having internet browser compatibility issues.
When I look at your web site in Safari, it looks fine but when opening
in I.E., it’s got some overlapping issues. I merely wanted to provide you with a quick heads up! Other than that, great blog!

— A bug report that doesn’t belong here —

The move to Revel breaks bug reporting for Photoshop products – at least for new photoshop.com users. I’d love to post this in the community forums, but I get stuck in an endless redirection loop (maybe because I block some cookies and/or scripts – why the hell do you need so many of them anyways?).

The photo list in Lightroom has trouble unescaping line breaks: See http://www.abload.de/img/lightroom_empty_folde00rzq.png (German localization, Lightroom 4.3 x64 on Windows 7).

To reproduce: Select a folder without photos, but containing folders with images and disable folder recursion.

(Bottom line: Just fix the bug report form.)

I use the free version now together with the LR4 Export Service. Thank you.

Wonderful if you know how to give the public what they want … Thanks for making free access Revel.

Adobe Revel is free, I think a good idea and most of all very generously from Adobe. I can only say, thank you.
