Engineers Live Code Customer-Requested Features at Photoshop World

Photoshop World has always been an opportunity for the Photoshop team to meet and speak in person with our customers. During the show, we’re able to gather customer feedback — including new feature requests, workflow gripes and more — that we use to improve upcoming versions of Photoshop.

With the release of Photoshop CC, we’re able to address customer feedback more frequently than ever before. To demonstrate just how quickly we can respond to customer feedback, we stationed Photoshop team members, including three Photoshop engineers, on the Photoshop World show floor. The assignment: speak to customers, gather their feedback and enhancement requests, and code as many customer-requested Photoshop enhancements as possible during the show, in real-time. We called this event our “Photoshop Live Codeathon.”

To be honest, we weren’t sure how customers would react to the event. But after three days of gathering 70 new feature requests and finishing seven new enhancements during the show, it was clear that the Codeathon was a resounding success!

The following seven enhancements were live coded at Photoshop World and will be added to Photoshop CC soon:

  • On a background layer, one click on the lock icon unlocks the layer
  • Set custom background color in New Document dialog
  • Better negative number support in curves adjustments
  • See recent colors in the Swatches panel
  • Change “Clear” to “Clear All” for the Color Sampler tool
  • Increase number of color samplers from 4 to 10
  • Change all color samplers in Info palette at the same time

Special thanks to the customers who provided these requests (along with the many more we’ll be addressing in future releases), and to the Photoshop team members who staffed the event!

I tray to work with ps program sinc 2008 but now i want helpe some additional new version

i need the t-shirt

Bring back the picture packages and the raw/psd preview.

    Included in Bridge (with Photoshop)

i have 20 new feature request for photoshop.Where i can submit my feature request?

Stamp visible, has a keyboard shortcut, but not a menu command. I would like it to have a menu command under the Layer submenu. Is it possible please? Thank you.

That’s not 100% true. You can hold down alt while choosing “Layer > Merge visible”. You’d need a keyboard when working with PS anyway, so you mind as well get used to the command cmd/ctrl+shift+alt+e. Way faster.

A very useful addition in PS will be the ability to resize to the long side in ‘file automate’ like in the LR output option. This will save having to rotate images before the automate and then rotate back afterwards so that portrait & landscape images are the same size.

Give the layer styles panel some attention, please, I beg you (Adobe).

You presented the new feature of setting your own default attributes as a “big” feature some years ago, and then you abandoned ship, again. Layers styles hasn’t been touched upon since Photoshop 4.0 (correct me if I’m wrong), despite being a heavily used tool, with amazingly powerful potential, especially among web designers. What you actually need to do is to re engineer the whole “dialog box thing” and learn from how After Effects is doing it. In many ways After effects is a much better tool for making amazing digital *still* imagery than Photoshop is – that’s just plain wrong.

Some suggestions:
– Any number of any styles (3 gradient overlays f.eks, going different directions with different blend modes).

– Custom stacking order of styles.

– Remove the *old school* low-res restriction of 250 px. You could do as cinema 4D does it, have a slider go up to a certain default number (this should be relative to document PPI), with the option to override to higher values by entering a number, or scrubbing the attribute title further (it works brilliantly.

Some other features you should look at:

– It sucks having the need of multiple adjustment layers where just one will do the trick: Again, you should do it as in After Effects. One layer containing your chosen adjustments, as curves, hue/sat, color balance. Adjustments should also be possible to copy and paste between adjustment layers (just as in After Effects) and be possible to store as “adjustment presets”. Imagine what this could do to general workflow, and unnecessary clutter in the layers panel.

– Copy/paste layers. Yes we can duplicate, but when we have documents containing some hundred layers organized in different groups, dragging the layer in the layers panel becomes a massive pain.

– Option to edit smart objects “in-place” would be huge.

– “Transform each” option width HUD controls.

– A powerful procedural noise-generator (like you find in 3D applications like C4D). A new layer style?

– Powerful “pattern overlay” in layer styles. (Choose file; bitmap or vector, or a layer from the document, scale tiles, and choose random rotation, random scaling etc. to taste). This would also be (again) huge.

First feature you’re mentioning in this article: “On a background layer, one click on the lock icon unlocks the layer”

This is all well, but does freeing me from a double click save me time, or improve my workflow? Obviously: No. I get the main point though; it makes it more intuitive for inexperienced users. But, don’t forget the more experienced one in the process. Photoshop should be a power tool, not a toy.

Improve what needs to be improved, your customers will love you for it!

I should stop now, but drop me an e-mail if you like to hear more ideas, I’d love to contribute to a better world :)

Sincerely, Håvard Frøland

Thanks Håvard for all the feedback! Yes, we would like to give Layer Styles some love as well. Unfortunately, it is a much bigger problem than what we solved at the Photoshop Live Codeathon, but we still plan to do a lot of the things you suggested.

As for the procedural pattern overlay suggestion, have you tried out Fill->Scripted Patterns? There are some powerful options there, although not in patter overlay.

When are you going to rebuild the “Radial Blur” filter this filter is not used a lot but sometimes it is the perfect filter for the job. BUT it is a pain in the butt to use, you must keep going back and forth to see if you got what you needed. Please make this filter user friendly.

Anyone else that agrees with me please make a post for this request.

Wow, hat’s off to the brilliant programmers, making the lives of us photographers, a whole lot easier! Keep it up Adobe.

I’d love to see the Photoshop 3D features more like ZBrush or MudBox. Right now the 3d modeling is not very good. You also can’t work in 3d with high resolution images (Minimum 300 pixels/inch for print) very well. Also it’s very limited to extruding text and simple shapes. There should also be more 3d content, like 3d models already created like props, as a library of 3d Photoshop layers (Similar to a Swatch Palette). Not 3d models from other sites that you need to import and struggle with mapping, reflections, etc.
