New Design Features in Photoshop CC, Including Typekit, Smarter Smart Guides, and More

Today we launched a major update to Photoshop CC – the fourth version of Photoshop CC with new features since its launch in June 2013. These features build on many other features released in past versions of Photoshop CC, like Generator and Linked Smart Objects. In fact, if you do the math, there are 45% more new features in Photoshop CC in total than in Photoshop CS6!

Today’s launch is a big release for designers. Designers, including those who work on web design and mobile apps, are an important segment for the Photoshop team. We’ve been focusing more and more on the needs our designer customers, and you are going to see even more design-focused features in the future. Here’s what we’re delivering to you today:

Typekit integration

Say goodbye to missing fonts. When you open a document with missing fonts, Photoshop CC will automatically check to see if that font is one of over 1,100 fonts in the Typekit portfolio. If a match is found, Photoshop will download and install the font for you, getting you back up and running in no time at all.

Font search and instant font preview

Find the perfect font in record time. Narrow down thelong list of fonts by searching by font name—even with just part of the name. And now you can easily preview any font with the text you want and in the context of your design—just select a type layer, and hover over any font that you want to try out.

Smarter Smart Guides

Pixel-perfect alignment. Every time. Smart Guides now show you pixel distances to the edge of the canvas when you hold Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows), and the distance to any other object by holding the same key and hovering over the other object. Smart Guides will also snap to common spacing when duplicating or moving an object.

Improved Layer Comps

Easier state and comp management. Layer Comps give powerful options for designing states of a design, or multiple variations of a design. In this release, Layer Comps are easier to keep up-to-date by allowing you to sync the position, visibility, or appearance independently across multiple comps.

Smart Object improvements

Smart Objects just keep getting better. Just a few months after the groundbreaking introduction of linked Smart Objects, you can now easily convert embedded Smart Objects to linked, making it easier to move existing documents over to a linked Smart Object workflow. The new Package command gets your PSD and links ready to share with other people. And if you have multiple Layer Comps inside a Smart Object, you can also toggle which comp is shown in the Properties panel, opening new possibilities for Smart Object reuse.

There is plenty of photo-centric magic in this release as well, whether you are doing design work with images or perfecting your own photography.

Focus Mask

Focus on the best selection. When you have an image whose subject is in focus and the rest of the image is blurry, you can now easily select the subject with this new tool, making your workflow more precise and even faster.

Blur Gallery motion effects

Blur the bounds of creativity. Simulate complex motion or impossible-to-get creative looks with new Path Blur and Spin Blur. Leveraging the impressive math skills of expert Photoshop engineers, these blurring technologies create realistic effects, along with their Blur Gallery counterparts Field Blur, Tilt-Shift Blur, and Iris Blur.

Other improvements

We continue to adapt Photoshop to the latest hardware available as well. In this release, we are dramatically improving our stylus support under Windows 8.1, with out-of-the-box support for practically any stylus, and smoother strokes for drawing, painting and illustration.

We are also introducing a new Experimental Features capability in Photoshop CC. By turning on one of these features, our customers can get an early preview of some of the work going on behind the scenes. This version of Photoshop CC has experimental support for a 200% scaled UI on Windows for high DPI monitors, 4k displays, and tablet devices. Also included is experimental support for Windows touch gestures. Note that both of these features are already supported on Mac operating systems.

Give us feedback!

Once you’ve updated to the newest version of Photoshop CC, don’t forget to leave us feedback about your experiences. Photoshop wouldn’t be what it is today without the loyal community of customers like you who help us find and fix common issues. If you keep talking to us, we’ll keep listening.

Here are a few ways that you can send us feedback:

You know what would have been great for 2014? Answer: a port to Linux or a real webapp. Stop ignoring your paying customers. Absolutely ridiculous I have to fire up a VM to use CC

I’ve just updated to PS CC 2014 but things have slowed down considerably since my last version… I have a gut feeling perhaps instant font preview has something to do with this, but can’t find any option to disable this setting? Or am i overlooking something?

Jessie, the instant font preview shouldn’t be slowing things down unless you are actively using it. But there are a lot of other factors to take into consideration: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/optimize-performance-photoshop-cs4-cs5.html

I know – I always finetune my PS to increase performance – didn’t have any issues with PS CC before and I used the same preferences (image previews off; no layer thumbnails, reduce history states, etc). But the sluggishness remains. In previous versions there was always the options to disable font preview, and that helped considerably. Now there’s no such option and I cannot seem to find a way to disabled instant font preview as well :/ Of course I’m not 100% sure the sluggishness is due to this, but if I have no way of turning it off to make sure. Any other ideas?

I already own PS CS6 and Lightroom 5. What are the advantages of subscribing to the Photography Plan to make it worth the subscription price? Is there any benefit to paying the yearly fee instead of monthly?

Thank you

The subscription gets you free updates for both Photoshop and LIghtroom. So when Lightroom 6 comes out, you get that for free. You also get Photoshop CC 2014 and all future updates. But the best part is that you get the cloud-syncing photo service that keeps RAW photos synced between LR desktop, and LR mobile for iPad and iPhone.

Hello, the smart guides are neat, but is there any way of it taking my masks into consideration? I use masks to make my layouts, but smart guides just completely ignores it =/

Cindy, are you working with simple pixel masks or vector masks? Either way it is an interesting idea. Please post feature requests here: http://feedback.photoshop.com.

      Pixel masks.
On a side note, they work well with clipping masks, so I am using these now, at least until they work well with pixel masks

I updated PsCC today, I don’t see the new filters, I can’t search for a font by name either etc ?

PhotoshopCC 14.2.1 < did this change to .2.2 or something along the line ?

Mine is also up to date but I don’t see the blur gallery that features spin blur

Did you fix this problem? I have the same problem with this new CC 2014

Since this was a major update, we installed a completely new version of Photoshop CC, instead of “patching” in the old one. We felt it was safer to leave the old CC installation in case people needed something in that version, so you likely have two versions installed now. You can safely remove the old Photoshop CC.

Thank you, that explains everything !

Is Typekit included in the photography (PS and LR) package?

Also, is there any way to show just one weight in the font list instead of all? When scrolling though fonts to find an appropriate font I don’t want to scroll through 20 weights of the same font family – this considerably slows down my workflow.

Nobody? I have fonts with over a 100 weights so if I get to that font I have to hit the arrow button 100+ times just to get to a different font family :/ Just casually scrolling through my fonts is taking me forever. I know this seems minor, but this is really impeding my workflow…

Agreed! I thought I was crazy at first when it took me forever to get through my font list. Please give us the option to collapse these by family again!

How do I disable the Smart Guides?
Thanks

Uncheck View > Show > Smart Guides. Can I ask why you want to disable them? Curious how we can improve them.

Love the updates and Photoshop is definitely moving in the right direction for web designers, but as I’m still a heavy user of Fireworks the one thing that would 100% give me the incentive to move over to Photoshop for design is the ability to create pages. I don’t like layer comps, Fireworks does this so much better. If you could port everything that web designers love about Fireworks into Photoshop you would have yourself an unbeatable application.

+1 for this. I think exactly the same.

@Adobe PS Team: Please think seriously about it or else support Adobe fireworks with regular updates.

Where are my third party filters in the new Photoshop 2014?

Since this is a major Photoshop release (a whole new version like CS2, CS3, CC, etc), you have an entirely new application folder. Since plug-in need to place a file within the folder structure of Photoshop to work, this simply has not happened yet. We do not automatically migrate third-party plug-ins from one version to another (never have with any previous versions). For one, it is very dangerous as compatibility issues can cause Photoshop to not launch or crash at other times. Check with your plug-in manufacturer’s to see if there is an updated required to install with the new Photoshop, otherwise, just run the installer again to get the plug-in files placed in the new version.

Does anybody knows why I cant use typekit with this new update? I have Adobe account and I cant sign in to typekit with Adobe ID.

There shouldn’t be any need to sign into TypeKit itself. The TypeKit features don’t work directly through the TypeKit website, for example. You just have to be signed into your Creative Cloud desktop app (or signed into Photoshop itself, same thing) to access the features mentioned here.

I’m signed into my account and using Photoshop CC 2014 but can’t access my Typekit via Photoshop. I’ve tried both dropdown areas to add fonts from Typekit. It’s working fine in Muse…does anyone have any ideas?

On a PC 8.1 OS btw.

    Thx!

I have used some of these features in design of my website. Looks really good. I must say Photoshop CC is really became a good instrument.

One of the best feature in Photoshop is typekit integration. I am loving this feature. Thanks

Some really good features in this upgrade. The CC subscription is definitely worth it for photographers. Thank you Adobe.

Loving all the new features! I’m very impressed with my CC subscription and I’m glad you guys are still innovating. Keep it up!

As a web designer, Smarter Smart Guides are the best thing of the year. Improved my workflow in about 50%. I hope they never take it down, Photoshop is now the perfect web tool for me.
