Tips to enhance Photoshop Elements performance

We all know that image editing is a resource-intensive operation and can make our computer crawl, especially when we have to work with a large number of images. Photoshop Elements (PSE) provides several performance-boosting options that come handy in such scenarios. When you sit down for a marathon editing session in Photoshop Elements, make sure you configure your preferences to enable these options. Restart Photoshop Elements to ensure that the changes are reflected.

  1. Quit Photoshop Elements Editor if already launched.
  2. Double-click on desktop icon for Adobe Photoshop Elements which launches the Welcome Screen.
  3. Click on Edit to launch PSE Editor, Navigate to Edit-> Preferences (Ctrl/Cmd + K) -> Performance

Modify the Memory Usage settings

By default, Photoshop Elements uses 70% of the available RAM. You can increase the RAM usage for Photoshop Elements by dragging the slider in the Memory Usage section.

Here’s the maximum amount of RAM available to Photoshop Elements in 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems:

Modify the History & Cache settings

Reduce the number of history states (Undo states). By reducing the number of available History states, you potentially reduce the number of copies of your image using scratch disk space. And that’s a huge gain!

Increase the number of cache levels for better speed.

Modify scratch disks

When the system does not have enough RAM to perform an editing operation, Photoshop Elements uses scratch disk memory. A scratch disk is a drive that has free memory. By default, Photoshop Elements uses the hard drive on which the operating system is installed as its primary scratch disk. You can assign up to four scratch disks.

Here are some guidelines for using scratch disks:

  • Choose a drive other than the physical drive on which Photoshop Elements is installed or any large files you are editing resides.
  • Choose a local drive and not the one accessed over a network or through a removable USB or external hard disk.
  • Defragment scratch disks regularly.

Set Maximize PSD File Compatibility to Ask

The Maximize PSD File compatibility feature increases the size of your file by attaching a flattened copy of your image when you save your image. This extra data ensures that a PSD file saved in Photoshop Elements will open in earlier versions. Non-Adobe programs that read PSD files can only read them when this option is on.

To change the Maximize File Compatibility option:

  1. Select Edit > Preferences > Saving Files.
  2. Set Maximize PSD File Compatibility to: ‘Ask: Prompts on save to maximize file compatibility’.

Close unnecessary files

Always open and work with only those images that you want to edit. Opening many images at the same time takes up memory. If you have many files open and see sluggish performance, close Photoshop Elements and open only those images that you have to work on or close unnecessary files.

There are host of tips and tricks available here http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/optimize-performance-photoshop-cs4-cs5.html#  and some of those are helpful for Photoshop Elements as well.

So, review, try and adjust your settings to get maximum benefit out of your software.

Skip loading of optional and third-party plug-ins in Photoshop Elements

When we first buy any software we try to explore, use, and learn as much and as early as possible. With prolonged use we excel in our workflows and output.

Some of us use third-party plug-ins (mainly referred to as everything which may or may not be shipped with the product, either free or paid) to achieve some of the outputs. These help us in saving time in manual steps.

In time you may end up using many additional plug-ins. Once in a while, a plug-in gets corrupted, and makes the parent software unstable, or may even prevent the software from starting. At that point you might think of existence of any magic key which would skip loading of all these plug-ins and still launch the product with full functionality.

Review the below steps to skip loading of optional and third-party plug-ins with Photoshop Elements (PSE) Editor while launching:

  1. Quit Photoshop Elements Editor if already launched.
  2. Double-click on desktop icon for Adobe Photoshop Elements which launches the Welcome Screen.
  3. Press Shift, and in the Welcome Screen click Edit ( or Editor for older versions). Keep it pressed until you see this message:

4.   Click [Yes] and your Photoshop Elements Editor will be launched without any optional and third-party plug-ins.

If a plug-in is causing issues:

If you suspect a specific third-party plug-in is causing issues with running PSE, you can remove it from here (I would recommend you move the file from the location below to a different one, and restart PSE to see if the issue is solved):

  • Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements [Version Number]\ Plug-Ins\
  • Mac: //Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements [Version Number]/Support Files/Plug-Ins/
