Adobe Reader for Smartphones and Tablets
A couple of days ago we released the latest version of Adobe Reader for iOS and Android, and we’re pleased to share a summary of the great new functionality in this update.
All New Look!
Adobe Reader now sports a brand new look, with a split panel that makes it extremely easy to navigate across different functions, such as viewing Recently viewed files, browsing the list of all documents, as well as taking a look at what’s new in this release. On Android phones, given the smaller screen space, the split pane animates to the left when you select an item. On iPhone and iPod Touch, the Reader UI provides a tab bar at the bottom of the screen instead of a split pane view, just like a standard iPhone app. All in all, it’s a brand new look and an engaging experience across devices and form factors!

Manage your files and folders, all within Adobe Reader
Adobe Reader now allows you to manage your documents right within the Reader. You can create & manage folders, and rename, delete and move files seamlessly on both Android and iOS (*). On Android, we’ve provided two viewing modes – while we’ve added the new Folder View that allows you to browse folders up and down the hierarchy just like any file browser, we’ve also retained the existing flat-list view that gives you very convenient view of all your PDF documents on the device storage. What’s more – you can manage files from either of the views. See below a series of screenshots illustrating some of these new capabilities.

Field Validation of forms
With this update of Adobe Reader, we’ve enhanced support for forms that have Field Validation, Calculation, and Formatting built in the form fields. Refer the screenshot below that illustrates this with a simple numerical form field.

Add Text Tool
Adobe Reader now supports adding arbitrary text using the Add Text tool (also popularly known as the ‘Typewriter tool’). This is available in the Commenting Toolbar along with the rest of the commenting tools, and can be very useful in filling static forms as well as adding text to arbitrary locations on the page.

Dictionary Support on iOS
Adobe Reader on iOS now allows you to look up definitions of selected terms in a PDF by invoking the built-in dictionary. This feature is available on all devices running iOS version 5 and above.

We’re pleased to announce the immediate availability of the latest update of Adobe Reader on iPads, iPhones, iPods and Android phones and tablets. This is a major update, and brings with it major functionality including Commenting, Form-filling and more, and all this for free! Sticky Notes
You can now create sticky note comments and place them anywhere on the document. You can modify existing sticky note comments, or move them to a different location on the page, or delete them. And all this with simple touch gestures! Simply long press on any location of the page to add a sticky note at that location, or go via the dedicated Commenting Toolbar at the top.

Text Markups
Reader 10.2 supports creation, modification and deletion of text markup annotations, including Highlights, Strikeouts and Underlines. The easiest way to add these is by selecting some text (via the long-press gesture) and then choosing Highlight, Strikeout or Underline from the context menu. If you’re looking to use multiple Commenting tools in succession, you can use the Commenting Toolbar, and very easily create multiple comments in a single session. Also, the Reader allows you to change properties such as color and opacity of text markup annotations, or clear/delete a comment, by simply selecting it and using the context menu.

Free-hand drawing tool
Did you miss the scribble or drawing tool on your tablet or phone? Wait no more! Reader 10.2 brings with it full support for creating free-hand annotations – just choose the ‘Freehand’ option from the context menu, or the Pencil button from the Commenting Toolbar, and you’ll be presented with a full-screen canvas where you can showoff your artistic talents! You can also modify properties of an existing drawing such as color, opacity and thickness, and choose to move/resize or delete a drawing that you no longer need. And all these changes are saved back into your PDF document seamlessly in the background!

Ink Signature
Reader 10.2 also brings in a very useful feature that lets you place your signature on documents right within the Reader, that would otherwise require you to go via the Print > Sign > Scan workflow. Again, you can do this by choosing the Signature button from the Commenting Toolbar, or via the ‘Signature’ option from the context menu. Pretty easy!

Acrobat Forms
PDF forms are widely used by end users, enterprises, government, and other sectors for reliable data exchange, and Adobe Reader 10.2 brings all new support for filling and submitting these forms right from your phone or tablet device! Note that in this release only PDF forms created by Acrobat are supported, and not those created by Adobe LiveCycle Designer.

With Reader 10.2, you can now get your PDF documents signed in minutes using Adobe EchoSign. Simply choose the ‘Send for Signature’ option from the menu and you’re ready to go! For more information about Adobe EchoSign, click here.

Reader 10.2 introduces support for both intra-document links (like Table of Contents) and web links. Also, it’s easy in Reader 10.2 to identify such links as they’ll show up with a light blue background.

Document Security
For document with certain restrictions, Adobe Reader honors those restrictions. For example, if the author of the PDF document has disallowed commenting, then Adobe Reader 10.2 will honor that and will not allow commenting on it.

Search files in File Browser
In this update we’ve also added the neat little feature that lets you quickly search for files in your Documents list. On iOS, just scroll the documents list down and you’ll see the Search Bar emerge from the top; and on Android, tap on the search glass icon on the top right to bring up the Search Bar. As you start typing the name (or part of name) of the document you’re looking for, the search list will be filtered based on that text. So, no need for frantic scrolls in long document lists any more!

Thumbnails in File Browser
Another neat enhancement to the File Browser is the display of thumbnails for files recently opened in the Reader. This makes it easy to identify recently viewed files, and provides for a richer experience.

Tablet friendly UI
Even on Android, this update brings a customized UI on Tablets versus Phones, and provides an optimal user experience on both form factors. The UI has been redesigned to provide a more engaging experience.

Navigation using Bookmarks
This has been one of the most requested features, and we’re pleased to bring Bookmarks support to this release! Documents that contain bookmarks present an easily accessible UI entry point (at the extreme right of the bottom-bar) to bring up the Bookmarks pane. You can use the navigational buttons to expand and collapse the Bookmarks hierarchy, and just tap on a Bookmark to navigate to the target location in the document.

Text Selection and Copy
Reader 10.1 introduces the capability to select and copy text from the PDF document to the device clipboard for use in other applications. You can access this feature very easily via the tap-and-hold gesture on top of the desired text, and use the text selection grabbers to adjust the selection that needs to be copied. In case you got worried, Adobe Reader honors the permissions settings in the document, and text copy is not enabled for documents that are copy-protected.

Print on iOS
On iOS, Adobe Reader lets you print your PDF documents wirelessly via the AirPrint framework. Note that, just like copy, Print is disallowed for documents if they have been authored to be print-protected. Also, Adobe Reader on iOS will disallow printing documents whose print settings have been set to ‘Low Resolution’ since AirPrint does not support this setting. Also new in Reader 10.1 is the capability to view existing comments that are part of the PDF. Just tap on the desired comment and you’ll see a pop-up UI that will show all the comment text, including embedded replies.

Jumping between pages was never that easy – Reader 10.1 introduces Page Thumbnails that are shown as you drag the slider bar to jump between pages. You can now easily preview the page that you want to navigate to before making the decision to do so.

Update 5/11/2011: We hear you! The email permissions have been removed and the update is now on the Market. However, please note that due to the issue with Android versions >= 2.3 mentioned above, the first time you try and open a PDF attachment from Gmail or default Email client on your Android device it may not open. The workaround is to try again, and it should open correctly. Enjoy!
