Concerns and issues with Flash CS4

For several weeks we have received reports and emails concerning issues with Flash CS4, so  I would like to address some of these comments directly.

Let’s start with performance and stability.

The team is currently investigating and working on four key issues :

  • problems scrubbing the timeline while working on a very large project or with complex projects with a large number of nested symbols.
  • difficulty opening large CS3 files with CS4.
  • crashing when a corrupt font is inadvertently used.
  • general performance issues and other reported crashes that are still being isolated.

As soon as we have more information on how we plan to address them, I will update this post.

In the meantime if you feel that there are other performance issues or crashes that are not covered in the above list and you have a reproducible example, please let us know.

Next topic: Flash Help.

We have received a lot of feedback regarding the changes made to Help. These changes resulted from an internal initiative to make Flash Help consistent with the rest of the Adobe Creative Suite products. These changes also allow the group responsible for developing Help documentation to produce better and more current content. The Help team also wanted to tie in community-based resources and the ability to search, which means that search now returns help results  not only from Adobe, but from other relevant sources on the web.

We are aware that there are severe workflow issues with the current solution –most of which Adobe is working on.  Some of the concerns we have heard are:

  • it’s available only when you are online.
  • Help now opens in a browser and not in the IDE.
  • it opens a different browser window every time you hit F1.

The Help team has assured us that they are working on these issues and on improving the Help experience for the Flash user’s needs.

Please let us know what other issue you encounter with Help. Additionally, if you have any feedback on improving Help to make help better, we are all ears.

Last Topic for now: Stage Rendering with Flash Player.

I have received several emails from users concerned about the fact that we now have an instance of the Flash Player running on the stage in the IDE. This is not a bug or an oversight, this is a change we made to StageCore to allow the Flash IDE to render content exactly the same way that the Flash Player would.

Up to now there have always been discrepancies between how content looks like on stage and how it play in Flash Player (e.g., pixel shifting, inaccurate rounded corners and text that looked different.) The reason for this was that the content you see on stage was not really Flash, making it hard to achieve complete fidelity.

With our new architecture we now have accurate representation of Flash content on the Stage. This  also  allows us to represent features that you would not see on the Stage otherwise. For example, the reason we have 3D on the stage is that Flash is rendering it in real time. You can notice one of the benefits by zooming into any symbol that has a filter applied to it.  In CS3 once you reached +800%, you would notice pixilation.  In CS4, you don’t. In the future this will allow us to render all the great features that will be available in the Flash player.

In short, we are working on addressing these issues, and are actively looking for any good reproducible examples and sample files that can help us isolate and test our improvements.

As a final note, I just want to add that the Flash team doesn’t just develop Flash but we are heavy users as well, we appreciate the support and passion of our community to improve Flash and we are committed to it.

  1. Richard, thanks for the update, always helps.Regarding help: Take another look at the knowhow panel that shipped Ai CS3 (http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/knowhow/). It was built by designes & developers who use the applications, it boils the better part of contextual help and community resources into a really usable panel. Unlike the majority of Adobe help system implementations, it does not return hundreds of vague results. It’s like auto-pilot for teaching Illustrator CS3, students have really taken to it.

  2. Rothrock says:

On the Flash Help I would like to add that for coding the most helpful thing I found in the old system was the ability to see each class and all of its properties, events, and methods down the side and easily switch between them. The new help doesn’t easily allow this. Sometimes I seem to get a help window with all the classes listed down the side, but usually not. And even when I do have it it doesn’t show the events, properties and methods. Only the class names.

  3. Rothrock says:

Oh and one other thing. Many of us have legacy projects and all in AS2. I understand that you can’t support legacy forever, but it would be great if there was offline support for AS2!

  4. Two CS4 problems i’ve noticed:1. If you have a large number of classes in the root of your ‘source path’ location, this significantly slows down certain actions, for example, clicking on the ‘Export for ActionScript’ button inside the Symbol Properties window.2. And here are several steps to follow, if you want to make symbols in your library disappear, including the library buttons and column headers!1.Create a MovieClip2. Select ‘Component Definition’3. Add a parameter so that the component icon will become visible.4. Select ‘Seek Bar Control Icon’ or ‘Buffering Control Icon’ as custom component icon.5. Select ‘OK’6. Watch the craziness ensue!

  5. Honestly, there’s probably more than I can list… but here goes:1.Set a clip’s properties to point to a class and it loses the superclass. That is, say it extends flash.display.MovieClip… after you fill in the Class field, flash.display.MovieClip is gone if you return to the properties dialog.2.I should have a way to “F1” and get just the language reference. I don’t want three or so clicks to get into the language reference. Anyone who says CS4 help is better have obviously never used it.3.What happened to the code samples in nearly every entry from CS3? Restore code samples.4.let me turn off the “stage is a flash player” live preview thingy. If I simply paste an image from my clipboard it looks like crap immediately because it’s using the default compression. Took me a while to figure that one out. It’s a real drag.I’ll try to gather more, but frankly, I see little reason to even launch CS4 for my workflow.Oh, did anyone mention the code editor is unusable? You realize that… but there’s a flicking every time you touch or resize the AS window–that’s new in CS3 (and should be fixed).Thanks.

Richard, thanks for opening this up to the community. I have a huge list of issues, but I want to make sure it’s not my video card or monitor or Windows XP.I have a 30″ Samsung HD monitor, and I have heard that Flash can only support up to a certain resolution. But there are other things that I don’t think have anything to do with display and are most-likely Flash specific. When I am done compiling my list, I will post it here. Thanks again!

  7. Kira says:

Hii’ve some problems when i create Flex components using Illustrator CS3 or 4 (is the same), after i import the symbols into Flash sometimes i found out that:- the scalenine properties i put into symbols disappeared so i must put them again inside Flash;- some vector symbols became bitmap without a reason;- if i put shadows effect into panels most of the time they don’t work properly;- sometimes rounded corner of panels have lots of problems to work wellI don’t know if someone else had the same problem, if so please tell me if there is a way to solve them and if i made something wrong:)If you are wondering why i import skins from AI to Flash instead of doing the swf directly with AI…is just because i did it many times but the swf didn’t work so well…Thanks for listening.CiaoKira

  8. Randy Troppmann says:

Hi Richard. I just started with Flash CS4 and the problems I see initially:- Windowing bugs with OS X Spaces (I see on the Adobe Forums that the Engineers are blaming Apple for bugs in Spaces)- General performance. Start-up is slow. Closing a file causes OSX beach ball for 15 to 20 secs. Thanks for the update.

  9. CaptainCode says:

Richard,Check out the thread we have going here: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/messageview.cfm?forumid=15&catid=194&threadid=1418933&enterthread=y There is TONS of useful information for you that we, as a community, are really hoping you (speaking of Adobe) will respond to.

  10. Hi Richard,I have found a really annoying bug with CS4 on OS X Leopard, using Spaces.I blogged about the issue, including a screencast of the issue happening, here:http://www.jonnymac.com/blog/2008/11/04/flash-cs4-bug-with-os-x-spaces/Several people have commented on the post noting the same bug as well, so if there is anything I can do to help get this one fixed in the update I would be glad to contribute.Don’t hesitate to get in touch. Thanks!jon

  11. This is small (but a workflow issue nonetheless). There should be a preference for “Automatically declare stage instances” that is global, not just pertaining to the FLA you’re currently working on. It’d be great to see that in the future. Thanks 😛

  12. I was wondering something: what do you inside Adobe figure is the cause of such a flaky release? Less than normal testing? Rush to market? etc. I don’t expect a public explanation, but I do think if you found the answer you’d also automatically find how to make the patch better. That is, if the reason it’s shotty is because you didn’t do much QA testing for example, then just improve the QA.If one of my programming projects (granted they’re all way smaller than CS4) was having problems I sure would like as many bug reports as possible from the consumers… but that’s not from where I’d expect to draw much help. I’d come up with a plan to fix the root of the problem–not a bunch of individual bugs. No doubt you’re doing this, but I am still curious for some ideas on the first question. Thanks.

  13. John Hattan says:

Help is by far the biggest problem I have with Flash CS4, and it’s doubly problematic with AS2. At least with AS3 you can set the help to work offline and you can still see it. Offline help in AS2 consists of a browser window with a single broken link.I have no problem with the other help for stuff like DW and FW (basically a knockoff of Windows CHM browser). It’s easy to browse and search. Even a link to a bigass PDF file would be preferable to the current solution. And making text-searches also search the Adobe forums is a bad idea. If I want to search forums for answers, I’ll use Google.I wasn’t wild about the help panel in previous versions of Flash, but it was preferable to the current solution.

  14. The project panel doesn’t allow scroll wheel or mouse nagivation. 🙁 FTL.

  15. Uhh…the AS Editor sucks. 🙁 I don’t think clarity is needed here as everyone from Adobe I’ve talked to just nods and agrees. In short, no code hints/introspection on custom classes or code completion.

  16. Dale Rankine says:

Been running CS4 for a long time now on Win XP, and the couple of main things that I seem to get with Flash are consistently:- General poor performance- Very slow to respond especially when selecting text objects and working with text. Has sometimes crashed after clicking on a text field.- Tool panel is never remembered and always has to be re-added to the UI when I start Flash (Ctrl+F2)Thanks for taking our issues. Cheers.

  17. chris says:

Using CS4 on dual monitors. When unplugging my 30 inch monitor the workspace tries to resize down to my laptop. It loses its size and alignment. So, I go to workspace and reset it to my custom workspace. however, this does not rectify the situation. the only way to seemingly rest your workspace is to quit and restart Flash. I’m on OSX.

  18. Mike says:

Heya!i experienced a weird behaviour when importing a PSD into flash. it will move the whole application down; first the select file dialog and then the actual psd to flash dialog.to reproduce, open a new flash document, use the shortcut to import a file, the file selection dialog opens, and then choose a psd (i used a fairly complex psd cs4 file which included folders and layer styles). once the PSD to flash dialog opens it should move the whole flash app window down for a few hundred pixels. once the import is done, you have to manually move the app window back to your preferred position again. (i had the window on max display zoome mode…so it covered the whole screen).not a game breaking bug but nevertheless irritating.

Hi,I tested flash for 1 month and put my debrief on my blog (sorry it’s not to make advertising for it) http://blobinabottle.blogspot.com/2009/01/1-month-with-flash-cs4.htmlMy biggest disappointment is the interface. Not adapted for so great power inside…

  20. I’ve also come across a bug in CS4 on OSX.1. Drag FLVPlayback component to stage2. in parameters panel browse to an FLV3. select the flv, hit return4. notice the parameters panel adds a full local file path to the flv (file:///Macintosh%20HD/Users/…/video.flv)5. select another flv but this time click ok on the file selection panel (do not hit return on the keyboard)6. this time the file path is relative to the FLAExpected behaviour: relative path is added for both click and enter on keyboard, I don’t ever want a full local path. Or at least make it consistent.CheersStefan

  21. Stringycustard says:

Hi there, thanks for this chance to air our comments and issues. Running this on OSX. I have problems with tinting movieclips. When I click a colour for the movieclip, the colour changes to the wrong one. When I repeat the process, the correct colour is chosen. Worst case I had was when it became impossible to tint a particular movieclip (even after closing and reopening Flash). It kept deselecting everything so that the properties window displayed the stage properties.Another bug is with the interface. When you dock a screen size panel in the top or bottom section of the screen, it becomes impossible to open as it’s “too big”. Forcing a resize on docked items should fix that I think (it forces a resize on the panel if you dock it on the left or right of the screen). At one point I opened up CS4 and the Actions panel (which I leave undocked, but full screen size) had resized vertically larger than the screen itself. On OSX there’s no way to resize this (you can only resize using the bottom right of a window). At least half the panel was offscreen. A dirty fix was to dock it on the side, resize down, undock, reposition. It worked, but this bug has been cropping up every now and again. Maybe if you had a panel size check that ran at initialisation of the panel interface it would fix this. This next one is a feature request. When previewing the stage in Flash player mode, is it possible to dim everything except a symbol that you’re editing (just like the old mode)? It helps to isolate it visually. I’ve switched back to the old preview style just to keep the isolation mode implementation, but it would be great if the flash player renderer could do the same.I’m having massive problems with textFields in AS2. When I had Helvetica Neue and Helvetica set to bold in a dynamic field with anti-aliasing set to either readable or animation the text would appear half its height or its height above itself. In some cases it “deleted” the top half of the font. All mouse actions act as if the textfield is where it should be (i.e. below where it is visually) and any traces of its position also state that it’s in the position it was placed, not in the actual rendered position (e.g. if you make an instance at (100,100), a trace of _y = 100, but it actually shows at (100,50)). Moving it into the incorrect position is not a good fix for obvious reasons. A semi-fix seemed to work when I applied a leading/letterSpacing via Actionscript to it, even a leading of 0. I think some of those text fields had leading applied via the GUI when the rendered incorrectly (I had to re-apply leading to fix).Fonts, particularly in dynamic text fields display badly when near filtered moviclips. They flicker and occasionally “break” (mis-render) by either not showing the full font, or by displaying a mix of characters over each other (like the top half of an “h” mixed with the lower half of an “x”).I’m glad to hear the team is working on the help system issues.

Hi, I have to tell you about the helpNew CS4 help is worst than CS3, hard to find what i need quickly .This is not a good when help is always online because it is wasting my time with my slower internet connection every time, better if you can make offline help system like Microsoft MSDN library for all adobe products then users can download and install and use it all the time when updates are available user can update the data easily , i think this not a hard program for you peoples.

Hello,I haven’t really figured out why would i need to see the actionscript edit window while i’m browsing in .as file? (Shouldnt it be obvious to hide it? Instead of showing that it’s disabled)It’s just plain annoying to press F9 everytime i want to switch between .as and .fla files.Obviously im not coding everything through .as files, ppl’s styles are different.Maybe it wouldnt bother me if i had more than one monitor, because then i could just drag the coding window to other screen. So guys, would you send me a new monitor?

  24. I like the new interface and Stage rendering. Some suggested tweaks:When the Flash IDE is in the background doing nothing, I don’t want it to consume 10% CPU. That’s 10 I can’t allocate to video compression or Photoshop. I’m guessing it’s the Stage renderer flash player instance rendering content in the background. Can it be paused, framerate capped or render at low quality onFocusLoss?Project panel settings are too wide: I must resize that column every time, since the settings cannot float over the column. Perhaps another settings SWF talking to the panel could float and solve this?We wan space with the small tabs, but lost some with that big header that holds mainly the logo and search box. I’d like to be able to hide that as well: I never search there and like all my screen space.I’d like the code samples back for complex functions. I used to copy-paste and adjust them. Thanks for listening!

Some times when i edit a symbol that contains a textField and move it, i dont see the changes, it stays in the same place, but when i go up one level on top of the symbol the moved symbols appears in the place where i moved it.Another thing is 9GridScale, for some reason it take quite a while to open a MovieClip with 9GridScale on.

  27. Wodger says:

I haven’t used CS4 that much yet, but I have used it enought to notice that the new help system seems more or less broken:- First of all searching rarely returns relevant information. Often I get more relevant information using google.com than the help page’s google powered search… CS3 help isn’t too good at this eigther, but it is a lot better than the CS4 help. (As a result of this I often keep CS3 open when working with CS4, just so I can access it’s help feature.)- You should be able to filter your searches to much more detail, especially when you are searching for AS language elements. Ideally, if I search for “alpha” I want to be able to filter it so that I get a list of classes which has the alpha property for that particular AS versjon.- The design of the help website is primitive both visually and information wise. It should be possible to present documentation (online or not) *much* more effective and user friendly than this.- It is slow, even by online standards. The fact that it is online isn’t really the biggest problem for me (although a local web-updatable solution propably would have worked better). I use Gmail and Google Reader every day and loves both of them. The main problem in my oppinion is that the current help system does not work well for it’s intended purpose.

  28. Davide says:

Some problem I encountered with Flash CS4 (some already listed in the post)a) crash if corrupt font present in Windows (crash even only clicking a text-field or opening a FLA), in addiction it freeze the properties panel selecting text toolb) crash opening some CS3 files (even without corrupt fonts installed)c) if I click on timeline frame, the timeline goes back to frame 1d) if I double click a layer to rename it, it return unselected (so I’ve to rename it from Layer Properties)e) If I try to save a file as CS3, Flash saves it, but crash immediatly afterAnd I also agree with critics to Cs4 Help system…online is slower and the search is worst. I know it’s possibile to enable offline help setting offine in Connections panel, but that’s not so good, Cs3 help was really better!

  29. Joe Cutting says:

Hi Richard,Thanks for giving us the opportunity to feedback on Flash CS4. My biggest issue is with the speed of compilation. I have a project which has about 50 class files, and a 4MB fla file with about 240 library items. On my 2.13 Ghz Core Due (Window XP) compilation takes around 10-15 minutes! This is an improvement over CS3 which refused to compile at all and just produced the “white screen of death”. However, this project is a migration from an AS2 project which used to compile in a couple of minutes with a slower PC…On the Help issue my main request is to be able to easily search for keywords and bring up the reference. Eg. at the moment if I search for “MovieClip” the free text search gives me about a million results. What I want is to be able to type in “MovieClip” and get the reference for “MovieClip” and nothing else.Hope this is useful to you and you can fix these issues.CheersJoe

  31. Rectangles sometimes gets deleted when setting alpha to 0. This is really annoying as I usually make hitareas that way.Opening a CS3 file messes up fonts. It cannot find the Arial font and when not selecting alternatives it will change some textfields’ fonts to Arial Narrow and some to Times New Roman(whilst the initial font was the same for these textfields).

  32. Jarek says:

For anyone that is fed up with the way that new help is presented there is a very nice tool that can read these docs. Unfortunately I only made it work with CS3 help, but it is great if you still work on AS2 projects.Check it out:orison.biz/blogs/chall3ng3r/?p=260

Thanks goodness for this post! I have been waiting for someone to listen & correct the massive stability issues in Flash CS4.Hi Richard,As an avid Flash user I really appreciate a way to finally talk with a human about these massive stability issues.1. You nailed my main issues up too. They happen so frequently in Vista 64 bit that it renders it (and the money we spent on it) unusable.2. Panels sometimes refuse to refresh while working on 2 or more movies (especially the main timeline) in my Vista 32 bit experience. Sometimes, the properties panel won’t allow font access (or anything else in there) on first open.3. Not sure if this is a bug or not, but there seems to be no way to add Bold, Italic, etc to text fields with this release, unless you have a font family with Bold, or Italic. For example I have a font named Font 2. Font 2 is a thin font, but doesn’t come with Italic or Bold versions. I can see no way to make it Bold or Italic anymore.4. Just an aside, the Motion Editor seems to have no way to save or rename Custom Animation waves. Also the new motion editor is a great idea, but path bending tool seems very clunky still. Thanks for listening, I really appreciate it & look forward to an awesome (and stable) release!

I have only been experimenting with the trial version of Flash CS4, but here’s a list of the things, which I don’t like compared to CS3:- the help system. I wish right-clicking on a function in the actionscript editor and chosing “help” from the menu, to act like the help system in CS3, not open a new browser window…- the whole interface is kind of sluggish, slow and tiresome. If I start “Flash CS4” and from the start screen chose to create an “ActionScript 3 file”, I have to wait about 5-6 seconds before it opens up. On CS3 I barely wait a second. Also, the interface lacks contrast. Please add an option to turn off the transparency when dragging the windows around.- I can’t resize the interface windows by holding and dragging the top title bar. In CS3 this is possible and I find it very useful when working on a smaller display(for example a 1280×800 laptop display).- Sometimes the windows nesting into each other is unwanted. Why don’t you, for example, make it Ctrl-Click when the user wants to nest the window in another window?Well, I don’t really like the direction Flash CS4 is going and I hope that the next version will be much better. I also hope for real working 3D acceleration in Flash Player 11 or faster AS3 Virtual Machine (which has nothing to do with the topic, but I wanted to mention it anyway) :)Regards

I would love to see Flash’s code editor become more robust. Currently I find myself editing AS files in TextMate. Flash now has a more serious language so now it needs a more serious built-in editor. Also, while the new project window borrowed from Grant Skinner is much better than what we had previously, it feels slapped in and it could use live updating. My two cents.

  37. Nathan says:

I have had issues with Flash CS4 crashing when I am trying to build or test AIR apps. In one case, it appeared that the file had somehow become corrupted (although it opened and worked fine other than the crash when building) and the only way to get it working was to copy my code into a text editor, revert to an earlier version that didn’t exhibit the crash, and then redo all of the work on the stage before pasting the code back in. In the other case I just found that one specific installation of Flash on one computer would crash when building/testing another AIR app, and I got around it by copying the file to another computer where I am able to build the file without crashing.

  38. DigitalDoyle says:

I’ve found some repeatable problems with 3D motion tweens that I’ve almost got isolated, and will report back with specifics and fla files to demonstrate shortly. One thing I did find when I first started using my Production Premium CS4 last week is that several apps were crashing with apparently very little reason. Turned out the problem was on my end. I updated the drivers for my audio and video card and since then have not had a single crash from any of my CS4 apps.Well, there was one crash in Adobe Media Encoder yesterday. It crashed on takeoff, but I tracked it down and it was actually a problem with my Quicktime installation, which frequently gives me problems. Thanks for this post!

  39. Hi Richard,Thanks for posting this thread so we can give feedback directly to the team. Since installing CS4 the biggest issue I’ve come across is a change in compiler functionality from all prior versions which I can’t seem to account for and which screws up a way I got around pre-loading sounds. In order to use sounds in the library, they must be exported, but I hate to have 1MB+ of sound data in a game that has to load before the user sees anything. My solution has been to uncheck Export on Frame 1 and then create a clip on the main timeline with all the sounds I have exported in it, with the Sync set to Stop. In practice, this would make sure the sounds got exported, but after frame 1, and without having to actually play. Now in CS4 if sounds are set to Stop on the timeline they are not exported. I now have to change them to event sounds and set the sound transform of the clip to 0. This means the sounds are still “playing” in the background for a moment but are now silent. Why was this changed? It was a very helpful workaround for achieving an accurate preloader even with exported assets.Along those same lines, isn’t it possible to allow users to change the frame assets export on? Just being able to redirect all assets to export on frame 2 so I can have a preloader in frame 1 would make self-contained, accurately preloading SWFs possible. Limiting it to frame 1 seems unnecessarily rigid and ultimately makes single-SWF, web-streaming applications a thing of the past. I’d love your insight on these issues. Thanks for a great release of Flash.-Chris GriffithGame Developer – Blockdot

OS X1) Rearranging document tab order. Small thing, but it bugs me quite well. When there are multiple docs open, and you are rearranging their tab order, if you pull it out of the tab, it loses the order which is too easy to do, and then you lose the order, have to redrop it on the back, and start over. Sometimes I fail doing this multiple times.2) You have to select the dock icon to return OS focus to Flash.3) Publish seems to take 5-10 times as long as Flash CS3. I hear it’s using the same compiler as Flex, and that’s something to do with it, but please improve it.4) There doesn’t seem to be a way to filter (or search) the Library. That would be very handle. As well as some way to BATCH edit export path’s. Right now connecting MovieClip’s, to classes seems very inflexible.5) The Loading screen remains “on top”, for lack of a better description.6) Several of my CS3 .fla would not compile in CS4. My solution was to create an empty fla in CS4, and drag all of the library assets over from the un-compileable CS3 fla. There was no error message with the unsuccessful compiles. That’s all I can think of off the top.

  41. Michael says:

Thanks for doing this. I have also had many issues with the program being unstable and crashing too much. Not on anything complicated either, but enough for me to stick to CS3 for now.

  42. Stu says:

Firstly I just want to say that Flash CS4 is a wonderful piece of software. I was not disappointed in the slightest with the functionality. My only complaint is the help system. All I wanted to say is that it is completely unusable and the only sensible solution from a users perspective is to revert to the previous version. I actually have CS3 open at all times when I’m working in CS4 just so that I can use the help file as reference. Truly rubbish. Please don’t “tweak” and change it…just revert it. Give us an update to CS4 which reinstalls the help system into its original embedded format. If it wasn’t for the help system in CS3 I would be a lot further behind with my actionscript. With the current appalling help system Adobe are actually hindering the progress of new users.

Here’s a major workflow issue. If I assign a Document class to a .fla and the class doesn’t exist (let’s say the package path has a typo in it), when I publish the .fla it publishes successfully. It should throw an error just as if you had a class that had a missing import.”Can’t find foo.whatever.Class”I realize that when you assign a class during authortime and it doesn’t exist, Flash will throw an alert dialog (sometimes it is wrong, though), but if you work on somebody else’s project (THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME IN THE REAL WORLD) it can take you awhile to figure out why things aren’t working because no compile error is thrown even though there should be.Please fix this bug.

hi, I have a comment about the Actions Panel tabs, when you pin a active scrip down its not very easy to understand why you get a duplicate, and specially when you have a lot of pinned tabs and you want to close one of them there is only one pin, I think the best way should be for this to behave just like the opened file tabs, also it would make it consistent.thanks..JP

one of the strangest (most irritating) bug(s) I noticed is that when you hide the app (or try to), at a moment when you have a lot running* (os x 10.5.4-6), the application may not hide immediately, in which case the app hides when you click on it’s icon in the dock, and after it’s hidden won’t (in most cases) be restored/visible, so I’m left to having do a force quit. case 2: sometimes the app does hide immediately, but still won’t restore when going back to the app. (not by clicking the icon using a program like witch (to switch to it), not by trying to launch the app’s .app-file** again and not even OSX’s build in switching capabilities)* Even when you have only a handful of other applicatons running, I still have noticed this.** By this I mean, going to your Application’s folder, and double clicking the specific program’s icon (in essence trying to (re)launch the app again. Most other programs I’ve discovered as having this same particular flaw in, would be restored by simply double clicking it’s respective program icon. (this in sense sends a start/load command similar to the one when a program first starts by the process of starting a program)To make matters even worse: Flash CS4 isn’t the only app in the CS4-product range/-line, to display this flaw, disability, whatever you want to call it.

My only real gripe with CS4 is its inability to save as anything lower than CS3. I work in a company that often has to deliver flash files in version 8 or CS3 due to customer specifications. This means that we have to keep copies of Flash 8…And if a file created in CS4 has to be saved as 8, then we have to save it as CS3, open Flash CS3 and save it as 8…Couldnt CS4 simply come with the ability to save to Flash 8? It would make everything so much easier!

Hi Richard,Thanks for opening this up. I hope i’m not repeating anything that has been said before. One thing that constantly annoys us when developing projects and are testing in the IDE is that if I have a named movieclip on the stage that is referenced in code, and set its stage visibility to off, when i compile, flash throws compiler errors. Please get in touch with questions or comments. Thanks!Ozzy

I’m a developer using Flashdeveloper as programming environment and CS4 as and asset manager and compiler.- The library is waaay to slow.- Updating sound encoding in library can sometimes show Javascript error (this is not really an anoyance since it’s rare and reproducible, but is the library done in javascript or something?)- You can’t directly drag assets to folders in the library. Altough it highlights them, they just land in the top directory.- About 4 or 5 crashbugs a day, mostly on compilation.- Sometimes compilation keeps failing without showing errors, restarting flash is the only solution.- Editing text field properties can’t be undone. Very frustrating.- Text embedding doing weird stuff. Question marks not being embedded, bold textfields turning normal (I had to apply a textformat to fix that one) etc.

Some of the issues I’ve had with CS4 are:If you activate a font (using Suitcase) while Flash is open it will crash.Random crashes, probably due to corrupt font issues listed.Large FLA’s are crazy slow to navigate, clicks sometimes take 5-10 seconds to respond.Motion editor greatly slows down productivity on timeline animations. Values on key frames don’t hold and I find myself setting object properties multiple times for one animation.Corrupt image in library will give you memory errors when opening the FLA.For reasons unknown, some FLA’s get locked to the top left of the stage window, they can’t be moved using the move cursor or any other method.Generally extremely slow to navigate around the app.Linkage names sometimes randomly disappear from library items then follow up by spitting out 100+ compile errors but doesn’t actually list them. Fixed by restarting Flash.Editing the linkage name in the library panel allows you to edit the word “Export:”, this shouldn’t be editable in my opinion.

One more thing. It was an issue in CS3 as well. Sometimes a custom keyboard shortcut for a custom command from an extension will throw an error. If I get the exact wording of the error, I will include it later.Looks like the dev team has its work cut out for itself from reading some of the above issues. Good luck guys and thanks!

  52. Hi,Most of my gripes have been covered but here is my top 11.One thing I disagree with is how big a file needs to be in order to see sluggishness. It is too slow for any fla with more than one frame for me.1. Cannot resize floating panels from the top.2. Delay when going into edit mode of nested objects on the stage.3. Takes a long time to launch.4. Is not compatible with Vista 64 bit. If you do not force Flash CS4 to into XP SP2 Compatibility mode, you cannot pick a color because your mouse disappears. Same with using the color/gradients pallet.5. The new Property Inspector really is not as usable as CS3 for me.6. If I Save and Close a file and then try to move that file’s location, I cannot because Windows thinks it’s open.7. Wish I could replace fonts without having to restart Flash.8. The overall gray color scheme does not work for me. I would like to be able to control the display like After Effects and Premiere i.e. add gradients and control the contrast of the display because it is hard to discern panels from each other.9. The blurriness of the tool bar icons when resized.10. XLF files are typed as FLA files so you cannot sort them in Windows Explorer – they get jumbled in with FLA files.11. Unexpected crashes with no explanation. Thanks very much for asking!!MK

I’ll jump in with some of my own:- When setting a hyperlink on some text if I go back to the Properties panel to modify the URL it completely wipes it out.- If I have a MovieClip that contains some Movieclips positioned in 3D, I’m unable to go into “Edit in Place” mode once I’m back on the root timeline. This means that if I go into regular edit mode, things are all over the place.- When using the mouse wheel to scroll down the Properties panel, it starts changing properties instead of scrolling the panel. The good news is that I have never had a crash, although I don’t work in large FLA files.Lee BrimelowAdobe

I’m currently working with CS4 on PC (Windows XP 32).Performance:I’ve noticed that the IDE seems to lock up resources even after closing files. I’ve only noticed this in AS3 files. This issue is inherently causing the IDE to crash at an unacceptable rate, and I can only guess that this issue has much to do with the Stage Rendering. Usually, the crash occurs whenever I try to open a file, close a file, or change tabs to another open file. I haven’t yet experienced a crash upon compilation, as other users have reported.Help system:The new help system is simply awful. I’ve figured out the trick on using the Connections extension to open the local copy, and it makes it a lot faster when I need to access the AS3 API documents. However, the offline documents do not include the AS2 docs (which I still need from time to time, especially because I mostly do AS3 work these days). I don’t mind the browser based concept so much, but it would be nice if everything was accessible offline. Thanks for taking the time to hear our concerns!

I am a UI Developer that does a lot of Flash work.. here’s what I’ve noticed about CS4…- Importing PNG’s to Library auto-crates a generically named Graphic symbol for no apparent reason.- Obviously, code support in the Actionscript pane is almost non-existent and very frustrating.- Can’t rename files in Project panel.- “Null object reference” errors are far too vague sometimes. The stack trace always gives you the method where the error occurs but why can’t it give you the line?- Support for keyframed dynamic text fields that are referenced in code seems shaky and unpredictable (especially when building for Flash Player 9).- SoundChannel object is kind of annoying. I wish that AS3 auto-managed this concept and simplified dynamic audio.- Text rendering on objects that are dynamically tweened is unpredictable, even when tweening is rounded off to whole number x and y values. *especially* when tweening a 3D axis.- Text field management for static text fields could be better. Why can I set font sizes for individual letters in a given static field but I can’t apply a link in the same fashion? That’s all I can think of for now.

I am still a CS3 user. I’ve been using it on the Mac (home) and PC (work). I work in the games industry (independent and AAA), and Flash is my tool of choice; but I have some issues…I feel CS3 is owed at least one bug fix on the Mac, as it is not nearly as stable as the PC. Small issues (like being unable to hide) need to be fixed. Where is the patch? As for CS4, I cannot see myself upgrading for home unless I find alternative offline docs or CS4 offers offline docs. Perhaps your team always has internet access, but the Starbucks here in Maryland only have subscriptions; meaning online only help isn’t an option.Cheers.

My favorite thing about Flash CS4 is that the user interface and the tools work more like After Effects and Illustrator. I would like the tools to become even more like Illustrator for drawing and designing in the Flash IDE. I find myself doing all the design work in illustrator and coping to flash. In CS4 the automatic import when you paste into flash works much better with layers than CS3.My Biggest complaint about flash is actually with the Flash Player. It needs to be optimized for the Mac. The windows version runs much faster. For example when you have large images that cross fade using alpha the frame rate become very choppy very fast.

When I have a ton of things in the library, scrolling through the library is very slow and chunky feeling, it’s quite annoying. I have a very robust machine with an e8500 and 4 gigs of ram, so it’s not my machine. Also, when I first installed Flash CS4, text entry into the actions pane was very very laggy to the point of extreme frustration. I found what fixed it was setting the compatibility mode (by right clicking on the .exe file) to windows xp, but I don’t think I should have to do that. I’m running Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

The help system should at least have some kind streamlined integrated language reference panel. At this point, I’d even be happy with a separate link/menu item that goes straight to a page that searches only the AS3 language reference. I think having to use a heavy front end that tries to combine community resources, official docs, forums, etc. makes the process of trying to quickly look up the syntax for some classes methods feel a lot more cumbersome than it should.

The IDE crashes during Test Movie. I don’t think this is related to the Font crash, but it could be.1. Flash is fine while developing and designing. It only crashes during test movie.2. It doesn’t happen immediately or every time. The movie usually plays fine the first couple minutes.3. If I test a movie, close it, and then open the .swf it doesn’t crash (this is what I typically do now).4. The test movie could crash at any time. I could be interacting with it or I could have it running in the background and sitting on a frame that says stop. Doesn’t seem to matter what it is doing.5. Does not matter if I have other programs open or if Flash is the only thing open.6. Happens daily on my work machine (Vista 64bit) as well as my home machine (XP 32 bit).7. I try to submit the crash report every time, but sometimes that causes a freeze and I end up having to ctrl alt delete.8. Doesn’t seem to matter if its a CS3 file or a CS4 file. It has crashed during both.

On the note of IK/Bones:Aside from some workflow-crippling bugs, it lacks almost everything: Spring-based bones; a visual cone for joint rotation constraints; a dedicated tool for reconnecting, readjusting, and transforming bones, strength and weight zones for the influence of joints; a real hierarchy without everything on one layer (hello, errors that just ruined an hour’s worth of work!); and the ability to bind multiple symbols to the same bone.On top of that, if you use it in a prolonged animation, the limbs will slowly shrink over the course of time. The arm will go from 100% to 92% in size. And if you try to readjust a bone in the middle of an animation, everything else will “itch” or “squirm” around even if it’s not really connected. I’ll have to stick to CS3 for everything that I want to do.

My biggest issue is that I have to click the AS panel twice now to activate it; if I’m, say, copying the x position of a movieclip from the properties panel, and I click the AS panel to paste, if I don’t click twice, it copies to the stage. And it will even allow you to highlight things without actually being in the panel. I find this issue to be constantly slowing me down. Finally the crashing… if I click around a lot, from the AS panel to spots on the time line and back to the panel a little too fast, it crashes without warning.

There is no setting to just build the SWF. This is a problem when I am building multiple SWF files to be used in one AIR application.- When I go into AIR settings the SWF is exported. But what if I want to change my AIR settings without exporting the SWF? It is incredibly hard to freely adjust the Position properties of a symbol. Please: give the option to disconnect X, Y, and Z keyframes. Also allow Roving keyframes for other properties, such as transform, color, and filters. Another thing: the option to change the frame or playback setting of a graphic symbol mid-tween.3) Make the bones tool easier to use. I suggest the ability to have a hierarchy graph that includes which bone is under which and where the joint is. Kind of like in Maya.4) This is just a small bug that I’ve only come across twice (both on the same day). Whenever I’d click in the timeline or several other windows, such as Transform, Align, or the Library, the tool would switch to the hand tool (the current tool would still appear to be selected in the toolbox). Thanks for this post and opening things up for input.I have a few issues:- gotta make that “flash player on the stage” thing an option that can be turned off. Flash idling at 10% CPU usage is no good when working on a laptop without AC power. And the usage tends to just rise and rise as I work. I just noticed Flash was at >20% CPU usage and it wasn’t doing anything! Closing the open FLA file and reopening fixes the issue (if “fixing” it means getting CPU back down to ~10%) As I type this, I have a brand new, blank AS3 FLA open and my CPU is at over 12% on my 2ghz MacBook.- this is a weird one. On my MacBook, with a 1280×800 screen, this is what I see when I open Publish Settings: http://hansen-photo.com/cutoff.pngAs you can see, the settings window is cut off at the top and there is no way to fix it!- Sometimes when you go to edit text, you can’t actually read the text. For example, I have a Static text field set to #FFFFFF and 50% alpha. When I edit it, it basically turns to white on white. I can’t see anything as I type :)Looking forward to the first update to CS4!Thanks a lot,Erik

Thanks a lot for this opportunity Richard, let’s see:1. Flash IDE scrollable text field bug with characters using accents(Mac, not sure about the Pc side, but been there unfixed since flash MX, really!!!)Make a new text field, set it to scrollable(under Text menu) try to type any character with accent, for example áéíóú.There will be an accent added, next thing the cursor will jump to the beginning of the text and insert there the accented character and the rest of the text you are typing, like this: óapareci´, should be: apareció.2. Flash IDE/ IDE swf Player workspace bug (Mac, not sure about the Pc side)If you have enabled the option “open test movie in tabs”, when testing the movie the whole IDE screen moves up like 200 pixels, rendering the ID useless, the only fix is to restart the app.Tried to work around this by disabling the test movie in tabs option just to get another bug, this time the IDE stays as it should but if you try the command “simulate download” it shows the swf like it was twice the height, moving half of the contents below the visible screen area, not useful at all.Already filed a bug report, Nivesh Rajbhandari – nrajbhan@adobe.com asked me to try something and also to send him the workspace.xml file, sent some screenshots showing the bug too.3. Flash player text field bug (this bug appeared on flash player 10, Mac and Pc)When you type more characters than the width of a dynamic textfield suddenly the whole typed text jumps like 4 or five spaces to the left, giving the impression that some text disapeared and making users think they can’t write longer texts (Already had this issue with a textfield used to capture an e-mail), no matter how you configure the textfield the bug remains.4. New swf export behavior, AS3(not a bug but a request to make it more flexible)So, now we can’t have a pre loader and content on the same swf and show progress right if we have classes or clips with “export for actionscript(with other than frame 1 setting)” enabled because everything is forced to export on frame 1.Come on!, clearly whoever thought about doing it that way left the designers and their timeline oriented way of working out of the decision, please change that to the previous CS3 behavior or some other more flexible alternative.5. Flash IDE/Mac window behavior bug!!! (to be more accurate, OS native feature removed form Flash IDE)On any other app, and for that matter the rest of the Adobe CS4 apps too(when having documents on separate windows), you can option + click on the name of the window and you get a dropdown list with a path to the folder where the document is saved, being able to select the folder and have it open on the finder, really good way to get folders quickly and deeply stuck in my working way to save a lot of time in the day.Guess what, you can’t do that any more on Flash CS4 in tabbed windows mode(you only get a tiny window with the full path in text, but you can’t click on it), and certanly not even if taking a fla window out of the tabs… you could do it both ways on Flash CS3, to tell you the truth I’m not asking, I’m demanding to get this behavior back, I know it sounds rude but hey, I been using that feature since the days of Mac Os 7 and now the very same app/platform that I support everytime I can and helps me to get my montly paycheck wants me to change?6. Flash help, sorry, couldn’t avoid talking about itInside Flash CS4, on the AS editor, select for example “addEventListener”, right click -> help… the help page you get is this one:http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AS3LCR/Flash_10.0/flash/data/SQLConnection.html#addEventListener()As you can see is belongs to AIR, not Flash, it is related but not as helpful as the right page to show which would be this one:http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AS3LCR/Flash_10.0/flash/events/EventDispatcher.htmlthe same thing goes for plenty of other links, if you want your user base to adopt Flash CS4/AS3 faster, it’s better to fix this kind of things.btw. just jumped to AS3 coding last December, already feeling comfortable with it, of course I been doing flash since flash 4… too long ago I know, but I can tell you this:In my office, from 5 people capable of doing AS2 code and some more stuck on AS1 code, I’m the only one taking the jump to AS3, between the tighter coding rules and all the Flash CS4 IDE changes/bugs it’s really hard to convince people to follow, and even my boss decided to wait some more time before buying new licenses, sounds like a bad business for you.thanks, and please look into it, I guess we all posting here love working with Flash enough to care about it.

I have to concur with everyone who has mentioned the new help system, and I agree with Stu who suggests a complete reversion to the to the old system. I find the help system for the rest of the CS products just useless – I always end up googling for outside help rather than waste my time in the help files. I can understand wanting to have the help system consistent across the different programs, but personally I would bring the rest of the programs in line with Flash rather than vice versa! The only other thing that really bugs me so far is that the stage window seems to exist outside of the Workspace settings, so to get it where I want it (I have two monitors, I like to have one entirely given over to the stage) I have to undock and resize it every single time. Certainly not the end of the world, but annoying all the same.

  96. Nick Marouhos says:

Win XPWith cs4 I’ve encountered significant lag within the library.Workspaces do not seem to recall the location of the stage window instead resetting it to the default location forcing me to collapse other frames to move it to where I’d like it every time i open flash or use that workspace. Finally, when returning to the main timeline/stage from a movieclip timeline, the view of the timeline, instead of resetting to the previous location, will automatically shift such that the frame you were on becomes the first frame in your timeline view. This can get annoying when working with long timeline based animation pieces.

  97. richard Dale says:

Not sure if this is an issue or just how it works but its regarding the new tween model. When you create a tween, and for example change the alpha property this creates a diamond on the timeline, what would have been a keyframe with a classic tween. Can these by moved? i.e. if I have one on frame 20 can I move it to frame 30 without undoing the property and reapplying it, in other words can these be dragged like a keyframe.I have tried and tried and I just can’t achieve this, if this isn’t possible it seems strange. Thanks a lot for this opportunity Richard, let’s see:1. Flash IDE scrollable text field bug with characters using accents(Mac, not sure about the Pc side, but been there unfixed since flash MX, for real!!!)Make a new text field, set it to scrollable(under Text menu) try to type any character with accent, for example áéíóú.There will be an accent added, next thing the cursor will jump to the beginning of the text and insert there the accented character and the rest of the text you are typing, like this: óapareci´, should be: apareció.2. New swf export behavior, AS3(not a bug but a request to make it more flexible)So, now we can’t have a pre loader and content on the same swf and show progress right if we have classes or clips with “export for actionscript(with other than frame 1 setting)” enabled because everything is forced to export on frame 1.Come on!, clearly whoever thought about doing it that way left the designers and their timeline oriented way of working out of the decision, please change that to the previous CS3 behavior or some other flexible alternative.5. 99. Hey Richard,Thanks for letting us all participate here.Overall Flash CS4 has been incredible and the workflow improved from CS3. My one main gripe is also the Help panel (or lack there of).I’m curious why the support for Third Party API’s loaded in via the Extension Manager wasn’t considered in this decision to go browser-based. I miss the old “dock-able” IDE.Also, there are the occasional crashes when I launch a file due to fonts. But I believe that’s an Extensis issue, not an Adobe Flash CS4 issue.Lastly (though I’m not sure if this is a bug) I noticed that when you publish the swf while the Actions panel is open, the swf is hidden behind it. I’ve tried to tab to it using the keyboard shortcut to move between tabs with no success. Slightly annoying more than anything.Again thanks for letting us have a constructive venting session.

Here is a list of my main gripes from briefly using the trial on OS X:- Splash screen stays on top even when switching to other apps- Top window chrome is ridiculous. There is no need to take up that much vertical space with something that basically just holds the application logo. I mean really, give me a break.- On Leopard the application window cannot be put flush with the OS menu bar. There is always an extra bit of space in between.- Custom interface widgets are inconsistent and confusing. Some places use custom scrollbars, some places use the OS scrollbars. Some places use the new scrubbable, hyperlink style inputs, while others still use the old popup sliders.Although the application window can be resized from any side/corner, there are no resize widgets anywhere to indicate this. The same is true for resizing individual panels. It is unclear where exactly to search for the resize control.- Compiler Errors window only allows a single line to display the error. To see the full error you need to hover over it and try to read it in the tool tip before it fades away. Seriously, there is no excuse for this. (This problem is not unique to CS4).- Scrolling Properties panel. When I put my cursor over the Properties panel and start scrolling with the mouse wheel if any of the adjustable properties move into the space under my cursor, the scrolling stops and the scroll wheel will start adjusting that property. This is a joke right?- If I open the toolbar color picker (for fill or stroke) and press ESC to cancel, the panel goes away, but it accepts the color under my mouse as the new color instead of reverting to the original color. The color picker in the Color panel works properly.- The Properties icon in the Library (the little ‘i’). Always appears to be dimmed. In general, this feels much more like a proof-of-concept than a complete shipping product. And if Adobe’s actions for the past several years are any indication, we’ll have to wait for CS5 to see any of these issues addressed.

Select an MC on stage, give it an instance name, group it, ungroup it, and in the instance name is gone. Awesome. CS4 on OS X Leopard.

  103. Ricki Barnes says:

I’ve only just installed CS4 in the last few days, so I haven’t come across too many problems yet, but ther are a couple that are immediately obvious.I expect you’re probably sick to death of hearing it, but I have to add my voice to the “The new Help system is rubbish” protest. I never use the Help on other CS products, I just head straight to Google instead of wasting my time trying to find anything remotely relevant to the subject I’m searching on. Flash, on the other hand, has up until now been one of the single best help systems I’ve ever encountered. I can understand the desire to have the system consistent across all the products in the suite, but surely it would make more sense to raise the other products up to the high standard of Flash rather than reducing Flash’s help to a liability? I also find it a pain that it is online, it can make it pretty slow. Any extra time that the old method of help took up during installation would be made up in not having to wait more than 1 second to find yourself at exactly the entry you are after, without having to trawl through hordes of (often irrelevant) results in a browser. I definitely support Stu’s calls for a reversion to the previous help. Or perhaps I could buy a laptop and install my CS3 on it for access to help files . ..I’m also not a fan of the new Flash Player stage rendering. I suppose in theory it is quite a good idea, though I never really noticed any problems in how something displayed on the stage as opposed to a swf. However I managed to break it the other day – the stage was displaying this weird behaviour while when I published the file it acted as expected. I sorted the problem out in the end, but it was a frustrating and eye boggling process (my symbol was looping over and over again, at lightning quick frame rate) until I worked it out. It would have been nice for me to have the option to turn off the Flash preview. The only other thing I have noticed so far is a really minor one – for some reason teh stage seems to exist outside of the worksapce settings, so every time I open Flash I have to undock and manually resize it to get it where I want (I have two monitors and I like to devote one entirely to the stage). This is by no means the end of the world, but it’s kind of annoying considering I open Flash several times a day. That’s just my two cents (or four cents perhaps), but of course I still hold an undying love for Flash. Go team go!

  104. You know I recently purchased a netbook (an eee pc) that I occasionally use for flash developing (usually I’m working on my desktop) and a lot of the dialogue boxes get buried below the fold and I have no access to the bottom of them to confirm changes. For example the preferences “OK” button gets buried below the edge of the screen. I’m sure I’m in the minority saying this, but these dialogue’s should be able to resize to fit the environment they are in.

This is best list I could come up with.Custom Keyboard Shortcuts Commands don’t work when selected for the first time after opening Flash.SEEMING FIXED BY: manually selecting any command in the application menuWhen exiting the inside of a movieclip, the stage will render guided or deleted assets as still there for a long while.SEEMING FIXED BY: Saving while inside the movieclip works more often than not. Sometimes, deleting an empty keyframe works too.At times, Flash will show a stage asset as selected by displaying a darkened frame or keyframe, but will not actually be selected.SEEMING FIXED BY: Restarting Flash. If you want a shared ActionScript folder to use in your AS3 preferences that resides on a (locally) networked computer, compiling a movie takes substantially longer.SEEMING FIXED BY: Keeping files locally obviously makes a huge difference, but it would be nice to compile from a networked drive so you don’t have to SVN from a networked drive. Seems like too many steps.Unsetting a keyframe in a CS4 motion tween in Version Cue file by using ‘Undo’ crashes Flash.SEEMING FIXED BY: ? No idea on this one.Undo doesn’t undo everything. It can skip over things such as setting a MovieClip to a Button Type in the Properties panel.SEEMING FIXED BY: No fix that I have seen.Import to stage/library always defaults to Illustrator File Type.SEEMING FIXED BY: No fix that I have seen. When Free Transforming a MovieClip, options seem to be available for normal 2D skewing and perspective, yet they do nothing.SEEMING FIXED BY: Make it 3D, but we shouldn’t have to.I hope this makes sense. Thanks Richard for opening this up so the community can respond.

The major issue that renders Flash CS4 unusable for us right now is the text properties panel.Whenever you select the text tool, the properties panel freezes and does not allow you to set the properties for any kind of other object (or the stage).Only restarting Flash will make the properties panel functional again.Appears on 3 different tested PCs with Windows XP SP3.

Hi, I have been useing Flash CS4 for two months now, I’m running on macBook 2.4 dual core 2gb RAM… I really like Flash cs4 but: it crashes few times a day, sometimes it runs really slow and when I want to change the font in the text field I have to w8 10-20 seconds for the list to show up (I dont have some many fonts, around 300). I’m usin Flash as a Flash developer and I think you should improve the code editor because its horible, or make better integration with Flex Builder.Don’t take me wrong I love the new release! I’m huge fun of Flash!

  111. Mark says:

I find consistently that the cause for crashes of both Flash CS3 and CS4 is imported illustrator graphics. If the Flash IDE crashes after a minute or so, typically deleting the illustrator graphics off stage (or out of the movieclip you’re live previewing) will sort out the crash. Sometimes, randomly, the imported illustrator graphics can cause the Flash Player (and browser) to crash too at runtime, but that’s a whole other issue.

  112. jimhere says:

What about making the “application frame” optional like the other CS4 apps? It’s so hard to flip between Illustrator, my text editor, Photoshop etc when that thing is always there. It even stays there when I try to click to the desktop to grab some files. Obviously, an application frame is a very important to many people, so simply make it optional.(tip: to work quickly with other apps, use Flash CS3 with the other CS4 apps)

  113. Nuno says:

    1. Copy text from Word document into Flash does not work.2. Some audio files will not import until I open them in Sb and resave as a new name.3. The mousewheel scrolling in the motion editor is very frustrating. Allow me to disable mouse wheel scrolling when inside the motion editor.4. Quick Language reference. I used to be able to select a word, hit F1 and automatically get a list of related topics. Having to go online for the reference breaks my workflow when my company’s network connection becomes congested.

  114. Shane says:

I’d like to add my voice to those who don’t appreciate the new help system. Having the component definitions close to hand is sorely missed. Also, when trying to create a rectangle on the stage, with no line and with 0 alpha, the rectangle simply doesn’t exist. If I want to draw an invisible rectangle, I have to create a movieclip and set it’s alpha to 0 instead.

  115. abenson says:

Most annoying thing to me is my Actions panel always get resized too large beneath my screen so I can’t see my last 20 or so lines of code. You can no longer resize the window my dragging the top, you can only drag the bottom portion – which does me no good if it’s off the screen.

Hi Richard, sorry of this comes a little late, but there was one more bug that I just remembered that really interrupts workflow when building mobile content. This is on WinXP, and when I publish to Flash Lite and end up over in Device Central, for some reason if there’s data being displayed in the output window, it always wants to show that to me in Flash CS4. So after leaving Flash and opening Device Central, it gives back focus to Flash and the output window. I then have to flick back over to Device Central to test my content. Thanks again for making this post.Cheers.

Perhaps I’m wrong, but it seems that – besides this post -there is no official link for posting bugs and “concerns” about CS4 IDE (I remember that the JIRA site mentions “Flash Player” but NOT “Flash IDE” ???)And that’s…. just one more “concern” about CS4(but plainly consistent with the current “patching” approach and overall QA level).

  121. TheCosmonaut says:

I echo the comments on help. I shudder to think of making the Flash help more like the help in the other CS4 apps (I’ve always thought Adobe’s help system was lame). Given that Flash houses a full-on programming language (unlike the other apps), I think it warrants a different help system. For my own two cents, I really miss having a straight-forward language reference with examples built directly into the IDE.The other thing I’ve been running into: 3D tweens that happen over bitmaps introduce artifacts for me throughout my entire movie. I also get blurry images when I use 3D tweens unless I make sure I remove the 3D object from the item when the tween is done, which is kind of a hassle.Other issues include slow load time and slow publishing speed. But given all this, I still have to say that I’m one of the hugest fans of Flash out there and I feel like it just keeps getting better. This time maybe I’m more excited about the potential that Flash 10 offers, but hey, I still love it. Keep up the good work, guys!Best,–eric

  122. Carl Calderon says:

I just have a few quick notes. Sorry if i repeat any others comments. Haven’t been reading them all…- Why must the compiler complete the whole compile if it discovers errors early? You can always see that the Flash IDE will tell you something is wrong, but you can’t quit the process or see the errors immediately. You may only see that it jumped to the Compiler Errors tab but you still have to wait until it finished the compile. And the ESC trick doesn’t work.- Scale 9 grid in the IDE becomes a mess if you have a 9-scaled sprite inside another 9-scale sprite.- font differs between OSX and Windows alot. Would be enough to add padding to the textfields.- Change the IDE theme to the beautiful AfterEffects theme.- Move the help back into the IDE (livedocs is too slow)Thats all i can think of now.Carl

I had been using Flasc CS3 for a year and used it daily to export streaming videos for use on our website. With the CS4 version I have had issues everytime with not being able to get video’s to play once I export them to our server. They play fine locally but for some reason wont work when I transfer everything to our servers. One thing I noticed is that the CS4 version no longer creates the Run Active file. I have been able to get one video to play, not sure how, but now I have run into the same problem with my latest video.Any idea as to what may be going on, or if this is a known issue?

I use flash cs4 for animating a cartoon. I chose it over toon boom animate, but unless certain bugs don’t get fixed I will always feel like I made a bad choice. The biggest problem being Flash CS4 crashes many times per day.On complex bone tool structures I’ve seen symbols move out of place as I use the tool making it very frustrating to animate.Commands that I assign a shortcut to don’t always work.Zoomed in to the highest magnification sometimes curved lines like circles will become jagged for no apparent reason when I select them.I use a lot of nested graphic symbols so I can select which frame inside the symbol I want to show, but sometimes cs4 will not let me choose the frames I want even on a new keyframe.I also don’t use the 3d tool, because as people said it blurs the object once it’s rotated. It’s not a bug but I don’t see why Flash couldn’t have incorporated a camera into CS4 to direct the action on stage. Right now I’m using an actionscript3 Vcam but on bigger files it slows down. There are many things I like in Flash but so far the negatives I’ve encountered in CS4 have outweighed the positives. I hope adobe will release a new update as soon as possible so I can continue work on my cartoon.

Can’t wait for the first maintenance release and hope it addresses most of the issues that people have brought up in this discussion. Here are some UI glitches that I have noticed (WinXP):1) This happens only on my laptop (desktop is fine)…I cannot double click on a layer name and allow me to rename it. Double clicking will make the layer label flicker as if it goes into edit mode for 1/10 of a second then restores back. I have to right click and choose Properties each time! Could be a video driver issue..not sure…using the latest nVidia driver on this laptop (Dell Precision M6300)2. Really dislike the new properties panel configuration…seems to take up more real estate than CS3 and wastes space even when I move it back to the CS3 location at the bottom since the parameters and selections don’t realign accordingly.3. Still finding some rounding errors when sizing objects using the position & size fields…i.e. drawing a square and typing in 10 by 10 and hit Enter will result in something like 10.1 by 9.9 (as an example).4. Component Inspector still is flaky when fields have lots of text (just like in CS3). It “jumps” over so the first column is hidden even if there is no text in that active field.I have seen many other glitches that happen on one or the other machine, but not both, so that tells me there are conflicts with maybe the particular video drivers…not sure. The same “features” in CS3 work fine on those same computers however.

the panels, when separated and dragged outside the Flash Main GUI, resize at random so that the panels size may be bigger than the screen size of your monitor. This also happened in Flash CS3. BUT:in Flash CS4 the panels can ONLY be resized by grabbing the bottom of the panels. So if the panel bottom is outside your screen, it cannot be resized. Annoying! ( Are they doing any beta testing at adobe, i mean besides selling beta software to customers ?)In Flash CS3 you could resize the panels from the top and bottom. If you dock the actionscript panel above the timeline panel, each time you hit F9, the timeline panel randomely collapses and the actionscript panel pops up. Then it is not possible to see the timeline and the actionscript panels at the same time.

I am always using two screens, and sometimes if i have Flash CS4 on one of the screens and Firefox displaying another flash on the other, everything slows down. When i want to mark a textfield inside a movieclip, the program stops for up to 30sec.Some movieclips width alhpa is not shown when in root.Overall it is very disapointing to see such an unstable release of such a trusted program.By the way, textformating with as2 coding stoped working after updating the flashplayer!Any information on when we will se an stable version?

Having an issue with stage rendering and alpha not displaying on OSX.If I have a movieclip on the stage which contains a semi-transparent image it displays ok when i’m editing within that movieclip, but if I return to the stage the movieclip then displays as solid without the alpha. It’s also affecting bitmaps with transparency and objects with rounded corners as well. When I export the .swf it appears ok.

  134. Am I losing my mind, or is there no way to do a command-click on the title bar to get the folder hierarchy of your flash.fla and locate it in the finder on Mac OS X. THis is standard in every app on Mac OS X, but it seems to have been obliterated in Flash CS4. I i might add that it works in every OTHER CS4 app.Oddly the filename is associated with the stage rather than the window.

Could you please fix the extremely annoying anti-aliasing in the actions panel on Mac. I’m destroying my eyes trying to use this.It was all fine in CS3, but for some reason the same font with the same size is all messed up in CS4.

  137. Hi, I use Flash CS4 in Master Collection. I have tried to install Flex Component Kit for Flash CS3 and even it is installed in Extension Manager there are no additional commands appearing in the Commands menu in Flash CS4 IDE. FCKfF CS3 worked perfectly in FLash CS3.

  138. Bret Hobbs says:

I’m a designer using CS4 in OSX 10.5.6.When there are multiple document tabs open, clicking a panel (color, swatches, etc.) will then eat keyboard focus until the stage is clicked. This is an serious issue, because all tool shortcuts fail to work until the stage regains focus. A lot of inadvertent points, marks, erases result. This does not seem to be an issue if only one document is open (no tabs).

Never mind that last statement. I guess that was just in preview mode.

  140. Johnathan Petricini says:

The whole CS4 suite is super buggy. Just pertaining to flash, I have come across a few bugs which are annoying as hell:-Choosing a color directly with the color picker/palette in the Properties dialogue does not work for anything. I have to manually select the object then go into the Color Panel and select the colors there.-Cannot select fonts with mouse when using the Text tool, have to type in the name of the font with the keyboard.-Cannot resize my windows vertically, AT ALL. This is ridiculous in itself.I’m running Windows Vista Ultimate with SP1 (64bit). My workspace involves two 24 monitors running at resolution 1680×1050.

A few issues I noticed, running CS4 on xp.Having the code editor in a seperate window. Then having that window covering the timeline and the stage. Then deselcting that window will result in a lot of flickering, the code editor will be hidden by the timeline.Importing stuff by pressing ctrl-r, first time it takes a very long time to get the dialog to appear.

  143. carl-eL says:

I’m really frustrated how unstable Flash CS4 seems to be. It feels like a beta (if not alpha…) product. For instance, a classicTimeline Tween with multiple filters constantly crashes Flash CS4. Or: at random, Flash CS4 is crashing just being opened forsome hours…you come back from lunch,Flash CS4 crashed meanwhile.Or: within some hours, the GUI becomes somewhat slow, the panels only resize in slowmotion and than crash, of course.Other issues:The undocked panels can only be resized by dragging them from the bottom ! If the panel bottom is out of the screen, you cannotresize the panel by dragging, because you cannot grab it !! (already mentioned in an other post, yes i know, but this is soidiotic, a prank or so.)Selling this crap to loyal customers is not the way Adobe should go. In Europe, Flash CS4 costs almost twice as much as in theUSA, there is absolutely no comprehensible or even fair reason (except brutal money making) for that. I tell you, for the nextyears i will not buy anything from Adobe.BTW: tried Flash CS4 on XP32 XP64 and Vista32/64, Vista32 seems most stable, but far from anything what you could regard asfinished and ready to be released software product for the pro-market.

Oh, here’s another one. Say I have an image that is 200×200 but some random ppi (i.e. 90). If I import it into Flash, I will have to manually enter the correct width/height because Flash has shrunk the image to compensate for the ppi. I understand the images should be 72ppi, but some stock photo sites allow other ppi in case of printing. The point is, why is Flash even caring about the ppi?!Also, regardless of ppi, Flash will create a graphic symbol for every bitmap image I import. That one I have no explanation for.

  146. James says:

Sometimes when applying alpha to a graphic symbol, the graphic itself appears to have an overlay blending mode on it. This goes away when compiling to SWF.When I’m painting with a semi-transparent color, and then try to select a new swatch in the tools panel, it will retain the transparency from the last color. This is incredibly frustrating and I’d like to see a preference to switch this off.Line smoothing is handled quite poorly. I’d much prefer Flash to handle lines in a similar way to Toon Boom Animate. With the spray brush tool, I’d like to see an option to have symbols sprayed at random start frames. I’d like to see a slider that can randomize rotation within a customizable range. (much more like the brush tool in Photoshop)The new 3D functionality is limited by the fact that symbols blur when rotated. The lack of 3D camera is a huge disappointment. Also, 3D objects should be stacked appropriately when rotated in 3D space.I’d really like to see blending modes and filters applicable to graphics. The quicktime export feature lags when there’s lots of detail on the screen. Please include a checkbox that takes a little longer to render, but smoother animation. There’s no easy way to get my animation into video. Importing movie clips into After Effects doesn’t work, I’d prefer to not have to use movie clips with filters and effects at all. There’s no easy way to make detailed adjustment when animating with bones. I would muuuuch prefer to use a simple parenting system kind of like After Effects. Please allow classic tweens to be edited in the motion editor. I still find them the easiest to use for highly detailed animating, but would love further control via a graphed timeline. Furthermore, please allow custom easing to be saved, both in the motion editor and in classic tweens. Please allow sound volume to be edited in the timeline itself using keyframes, similar to Adobe Premiere. The current method requires too much guess work. The motion editor continues to zoom in way too far by default. Please have it show the entire tween span by default when creating new tweens. There should be a way to convert classic tweens to new tweens.Sound gradually falls out of sync for longer animations using mp3 compression. It syncs perfectly using ADPCM but the quality is heavily degraded. In the motion editor, Please allow the X,Y and Z values to use smooth left, smooth right etc and have it update on the canvas. Having to create a new custom easing, then apply it to my motion, and then not being able to edit it again too easily is a huge bottleneck. With the new tween system, can the points representing frames by moved along the bezier curve, to allow for frame by frame refining of timing.

  147. Sebastian Kreutz says:

The properties panel freezes as soon as you select the text tool. This prevents the user from working with any other object properties. The only thing that helps is a complete restart of Flash – until you need the text tool again. Totally disrupts any workflow in CS4 and renders it unusable for any flash design. It happens on all of our company’s computers, Windows XP SP3.

Drawings with drawn objects sometimes also occurs between the object and graphics rendering, of course it is all in the document AS3. I’m thinking about my CS3 upgrade to CS4, hear ADOBE is trying to solve, I felt relieved. I am not sad. The great ADOBE. Now one of the same software and FLASH Toon Animate7.6 has, he and FLASH CS4 extreme imagination. Hope ADOBE harder! ! !

Here’s a bug that keeps causing me grief.Mac Flash CS4 Actions Panel – Every now and again, the Actions panel ends up larger than the height of my screens (1920×1200) and I can’t resize it back down because the top of the Actions Panel doesnt’ allow me to resize the panel vertically. Flash CS3 didn’t have that top header on the panel so I could resize it. Either fix the panel so that it doesn’t resize itself on its own, or allow me to resize it vertically. Resetting my workspace is a crappy workaround to fix this issue.

  151. David Grimason says:

The continued lack of a proper code editor a major disappointment for me. Having spent time recently on a Flex project, I can’t go back and have now started using Flex Builder for editing AS files in my Flash projects. When are you fixing the mac flash player?Surely there must be at least one person at Adobe who uses a mac laptop to look at youtube etcUsing flash player 10/Safari/Youtube, my processor usage rockets to 80-85%, the computer gets really hot (+80ºC) and the fans go into overdrive. If I download the same FLV and run it through VLC, it uses 10-15% and doesn’t get hot and the fans stay quiet. If I run XP inside Fusion, IE+FP10 on the same mac, it barely registers any additionally processor usage. There is something seriously wrong in the mac flash player.

I’m an animator and I have to say that I love the direction Flash is taking…I know it will take a while and maybe a few versions to perfect some of the issues…but my main issues have to do with:A. SmoothingB. GroupingThe only gripe I have with smoothing is that I can’t set a keyboard shortcut. The option is not there. And a weird thing happens with grouping. In previous versions of flash, I have been able to hit Ctrl+G before even putting down a line and it grays out the stage. Now…when I hit Ctrl+G, it does NOT gray out the stage and when I draw the line becomes invisible when I release the pen. It only shows up again after a massive fit of clicking. It’s very strange.I use these tools more than anything else. If they are fixed, I’d be the happiest person on the planet. Until then, I’m frustrated and using CS3. 🙁

  156. Tom Anderson says:

Flash played in the IDE plays at a different speed than in the Flash player. And CTRL-ENTER performs a different function. The first time you press it, it runs a flash file. The second time, it tests download speeds. So I’m forced to hit CTRL-ENTER twice to reload the file I’m testing.

Flash CS4 ran fine for a while on a few of our iMacs w/Leopard. Suddenly all symbols on the stage (graphic, MC, or button)disappear they are there, and selectable with only the registration point circle visible. When double-clicking down the drawing object level all is visible. When navigating back out the the symbol level all disappears. However, the exported SWF is fine. This just started happening on our iMacs (2 out of four now hvae this problem.) Any suggestions? I’m pretty sure it is not a setting issue in Flash…

  160. Richard,Discovered another bizarre one when using the Bandwidth Profiler:When I test the movie, the test player sizes correctly to the stage dimensions as expected. When I test and use the Bandwidth Profiler, the first time the window sizes correctly. But with each subsequent test, the movie gets pushed down further and further (this is without closing the window each time. This is hitting Test Movie while the test window is still open).Hope that makes sense and thanks again for the forum.

  168. Josh says:

I have not explored IK feature at length yet, but there is one really major problem, from the perspective of animation: Graphic Symbols that are connected in an armature cannot be controlled (you can’t choose which static frame you want the symbol to be showing). This is crucial to any animating job, and as far as I can see, it makes the whole IK thing useless. No real character animation can be done with this technique, nothing expressive can be achieved.I wonder if animators (who still use Flash) were ever heard during the planning of Flash CS4.Cheers.

  169. Alfredo Santamaria says:

Ah, it´s working now, hope is not too late.First of all, thanks a lot for this opportunity Richard, let´s see:1. Flash IDE, select font menu (changed behavior, is going backwards the new “upgrade”? )In every other app you always have the ability to choose a font this way:Type the name of the font after clicking on the font drop box and you get the font you are looking for selected, or, if typed wrong or not available, the closest match, this worked the same way in Flash CS3 and below, but now on Flash CS4 we can’t do it like that, the current behavior takes you to the last letter typed, for example if you were looking for the font “Eurostile” you usually would start typing e, u.. but now instead of ending with the Eurostile font highlithed, you end with the first occurence of the letter u!The only way to get to the correct font is to keep clicking the first letter on the font name, following the example: e,e,e,e,e,e,e… until you get the Eurostile font selected… so much for improvement uh?And of course we could count as a backwards movement the “new” windows like look… blue highlight on the currently selected font on Mac, instead of the default OS highlight color?, I think I haven’t seen that even in windows since win 95.5. New swf export behavior, AS3(not a bug but a request to make it more flexible)So, now we can’t have a pre loader and content on the same swf and show progress right if we have classes or clips with “export for actionscript(with other than frame 1 setting)” enabled because everything is forced to export on frame 1.Come on!, clearly whoever thought about doing it that way left the designers and their timeline oriented way of working out of the decision, please change that back to the previous CS3 behavior or some other flexible alternative.6. Flash IDE/Mac window behavior bug!!! (to be more accurate, OS native feature removed form Flash IDE)On any other app, and for that matter the rest of the Adobe CS4 apps too, you can option + click on the name of the file in the window and you get a dropdown list with a path to the folder where the document is saved, being able to select the folder and have it open on the finder, really good way to get folders quickly… and deeply stuck in my working way to save a lot of time in the day.Guess what, you can’t do that any more on Flash CS4 (you only get a tiny window with the full path in text, but you can’t click on it), not even if taking a fla window out of the tabs… you could do it both ways on Flash CS3, to tell you the truth I’m not asking, I’m demanding to get this behavior back, I know it sounds rude but hey, removing a feature directly available from the OS since the days of Mac Os 7 is rude too.7. Flash help, sorry, couldn’t avoid talking about itInside Flash CS4, on the AS editor, select for example “addEventListener”, right click -> help… the help page you get is this one:http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AS3LCR/Flash_10.0/flash/data/SQLConnection.html#addEventListener()As you can see is belongs to AIR, not Flash, it is related but not as helpful as the right page to show which would be this one:http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AS3LCR/Flash_10.0/flash/events/EventDispatcher.htmlthe same thing goes for plenty of other links, if you want your user base to adopt Flash CS4/AS3 faster, it’s better to fix this kind of things.btw. just jumped to AS3 coding last December, already feeling comfortable with it(finding help on books and blogs, not on Adobe’s help pages sadly), of course I been doing flash since flash 4… too long ago I know, and so far I can tell you this:In my office, from 5 people capable of doing AS2 code and some more stuck on AS1 code, I’m the only one taking the jump to AS3, between the tighter coding rules and the Flash CS4 IDE changes/bugs it’s really hard to convince people to follow, even my boss decided to wait some more time before buying new licenses, sounds like a bad business.Ah yes, please fix those random and sudden app crashes too.Have a nice day!

I would really appreciate some feedback on this issue.

Hello and thanks for this blog. Like lots of people stated, it’s nice to be able to bring up the issues we come across.1) When making new shortcuts, I’ve been having to re-invigorate them by opening and closing the shortcuts menu. They also seem to switch back and forth, randomly reassigning each other on their own. One problem could be that I ported my Flash 8 shortcuts over though.2) I’m having a HUGE issue with curves keeping their curvature. I think it’s been mentioned here before but it’s been very anti-productive so I thought I’d bring it up again.3) When drawing with the feathering tool and switching certain attributes ( size, type or brush, etc… ), you loose the feathering on the first pass. I need to undo the first one and then restart drawing.4) When in outline mode, if I nudge on either side, it goes from outline, to full drawing, back to outline. These are weird little things that don’t necessarily impede on our work but can slow production down in the long run. And these seem to pop up a lot more when we’re at 2000% stage zoom. Thanks for the time.Cheers.

Hi Richard,I’m working on a large scale Flash game project and it appears that we’ve hit the maximum number of classes per swf. We have some asset swf files that have between 1000 to 2500 actionscript linkages (classes) and we are no longer able to reliably call getDefinitionByName() to get references to assets in our external swf’s library.

  188. The IK system has a lot of potential but is not yet solid enough to be considered a real feature. I’m trying to use it to animate bitmap symbols. The most frustrating bug is that the pivot points do not stay locked in place. If I move pivots on a different section of the model they change somewhere else. So you get into a cycle of constantly fixing pivots instead of moving on to animating. Also, the Movie Explorer should work within the nested symbols. This will allow you to select the symbols toward the back of the model. Otherwise, there is no way to select them without moving other symbols out of the way first.

  189. Jesse Shaver says:

I’ve been having an issue with font selection, and I think I’ve figured out specifically what it is.For several fonts on my system, I have multiple different families installed, often in different formats and from different sets. For instance, with Helvetica, I have the base Mac OS Helveticas, the Helvetica Neues, the Helvetica CY set, and an assorted group of PS1 Helvetica variants like Light. The way that Flash is set to group and display Helveticas meant that I’d always have a few instances on my font list that were named the same thing, but contained different subsets of fonts. (For instance, I had three items on my list called “Helvetica”, and two called “Helvetica Neue”, and then a further bunch of ones with specific names like “Helvetica Neue 57 Condensed”.) That was a tiny bit annoying, but really caused no problems in CS3.In Flash CS4, if there are multiple items on a dropdown list with the same display name, it is literally impossible to select any of them but the first. If I try to manually click on the second “Helvetica” entry, Flash acts like I clicked on the first one. I can’t even scroll the font menu, using the down key, past any place on the list where there is a second font with the same name as the previous one — the “down” simply does nothing. This is an incredibly frustrating bug, and I have to imagine it’s based on how Flash’s internal dropdowns are storing and referencing data, rather than an inability to use the fonts. Flash *sees* the extra fonts, after all, it simply provides no way for me to select them.

Hi,This is not a bug. It’s a deliberately removed feature, and it hurts my business.I upgraded my version of Creative Suite to CS 4 Design Premium last October.Part of my work this year will involve creating e-learning content. However, learning interactions have been removed from Flash CS 4. Now they’re included in a special e-learning suite that costs $1800, Windows only.Does Adobe seriously expect people like me to:(a) pay $600 (per seat) for an “upgrade” with reduced functionality in October (Creative Suite, Mac)(b) pay an additional $1800 (per seat) to restore some of this functionality the following March (E-learning Suite, Win)(c) change OS and hardware as necessary? If Adobe’s intent was to reserve these features exclusively for an e-learning suite, then it should have advised people upgrading to Flash CS 4 of this limitation.Ethically, I believe Adobe should make the learning interactions available for download, either as a standalone package for CS 4 upgraders or as a patch for Flash CS 4.Practically, I believe Adobe would benefit when its marketing division attempts to sell CS 5 or Flash Catalyst in a recession!Aongus Collins

Hi Richard,I’ve been using Flash CS4 for the last coupla’ days, but I’ve already switched back to CS3 since I find the interface quite hard to work with. Definitely brought all my expectations crashing down, inspite of the tremendous potential that Flash CS4 holds. Anyway, here are a couple of issues I’d like to point out.(OS: WinXP 32-bit)1. The Properties TabNeither the docked nor the floating panel is user-friendly. I find the floating panel convenient since I work on a dual-screen, though it still occupies a lot of real estate. The CS3 tab-style was a lot friendlier to work with. Also, please reconsider the grouping/organization of properties. There’s simply too much expanding/collapsing to do. Looks like the classic case of the Perfectionist who took immense pains and gave them to others.2. The Properties panel freezes, this has been mentioned in a post before. This is very frustrating!3. An alternative to precisely defining the width and height when the properties panel freezes is the Info window. However this has no ‘Constrain proportions’ option. I need to restart Flash because of this tiny issue!I sure hope there’s an update soon. Thanks,Aswin

I found a solution to the crashing and the problem I was having with dynamic text fields. Initially if I created a dynamic text field and click on the text box so that I could set the properties Flash would crash. More often Flash would not crash but the propeties panel for the text field would be all funky – glitchy, no way to give the dynamic text field an instance name.I created a new user account on my Windows XP machine and Flash CS4 worked fine. Went back to my normal user account and pinpointed that a trial version of Dreamweaver CS3 was causing a conflict with Flash CS4. I have DW MX 2004 so I never purchased DW CS3 and never unintalled it either. Anyhow, problem solved!

  197. We still use Flash 8 for the majority of our projects and for me the killer of CS4 is its sluggish IDE.Adobe are investing in apps to increase workflow such as Catalyst etc but it is clear that many users are loosing alot of time with these bugs and the slow ide.Adobe would be far better off if they spent time getting the ide right.Alot of people have stated that you should be able to turn of features. I completely agree with this.Everyday project timelines are getting shorter and we are under increased pressure to perfom and yet the Flash development is getting slower this is obviously a bad combination and I am not sure how its going to end.

No idea whats going on :(——————–Regarding everything else, I haven’t had a SINGLE crash yet and I have it open and running for 12+ hours a day… Running on XP Pro with SP3.. ive heard so many people having problems with CS4 crashing, they all have SP2…???Otherwise keep up the good work guys, love the new features!Regards,Matt / MSFX

I’ve only had CS4 installed for about an hour now, but have had 5 crashes already. Most frustrating is how random they are; the files I have open are small, and the crashes occur after merely clicking on something on my stage (not while opening, editing, or processing something large and liable to cause a crash).I could provide further feedback on functionality if only I could get Flash to stay open for longer than five consecutive minutes…

Flash is a good software, ADOBE after the acquisition, I look forward to more. I thought that there would be a praise of the new era. Only the surface, everything will only allow users to more disappointment, FLASH CS4 is proof of that. The collapse of the normal job so that I can not. Bought CS3, and then bought CS4, so we all just want to work in previous versions. CS4’s a lot of questions. ADOBE hope that as soon as possible.CTEL + SHIFT + D shortcut key, will always make the collapse of FLASH CS4.Graphics components set up the skeleton, the property panel in the property set into a movie clip, so that after the property put into a layer of bone running example, testing export collapse will destroy it, to try a number of times, it will collapse the number of times destroyed.FLASH allow the use of the bones of the job change more slowly, sometimes moving about for a long time and so on. Wait for improvement. Do not now have, always will be sluggish because of death. Flash CS4 features the most imperfect, as are “FLASH BABY”.

I´m on Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 x64 / RAM 4GB / ATI RADEON x1600 / 860 GB (3 HD)I’ve been using Flash CS4 for 10 days without any problem. Since yesterday Flash crashes when I want to drag a symbol from the library to the stage. The .fla file is small (250kb) but has some important drawings. I tried to copy the symbols to paste them on other .fla file but flash also crashes.I´ve also tried installing Flash in Windows 7 (build 7048) having the same problem as in Vista.I´ve read in some forums that Flash CS4 may have some conflict with some corrupted fonts but I´m not using any text in my .fla. Anyway I deleted the “supposedly” bad fonts but had no luck.I found in Adobe.com an update (10.0.1) for flash. Installed it but flash keeps showing as 10.0.I also tried downloading and installing the trial version, no luck.

  212. We use Flash CS4 for extended web design and app development. Flash crashes on a variety of systems an os configurations. Another heavy bug is, that in old as2 projects, symbols get deleted when marked and ctrl+s is pressed.

  213. Tronster says:

Summary:Re-exporting fonts for runtime sharing is broken in the IDE.Description:Flash forgets what fonts have been checked for export for runtime; even though a check mark shows up in the IDE. Subsequent publishing results in a SWF without the shared fonts and no errors are logged. Files that use the shared fonts from that SWF will, of course, fail.Steps to reproduce:1. Create a FLA2. Add 5 fonts symbols to the library (e.g., “$Normal”, “$Alternative”, etc…)3. Set each font symbol to be exported.4. Create SWF5. Create 2nd file and set it import at runtime the fonts6. Create a text field with “$Normal”.7. Run, see it work.8. Close the IDE; and start it back up.9. Open the font file.10. Choose re-publish11. Bring up the 2nd file12. Attempt to publish13. See that it doesn’t work because the original file didn’t export fonts.Workaround:Whenever publishing a file with shared fonts, go into each font, unselect export for runtime. Save & close file. Reopen file and for every font select export for runtime.Affected:Just confirmed that CS4 PC, CS3 PC/Mac, and MX2004 PC all have this bug; I’m assuming the other versions do too.Personal note:Days worth of hours have been lost between co-workers and myself encountering this bug. Since all AAA games using Flash for UI tend to export fonts in this fashion I’d be surprised if many studios haven’t had to deal with this issue.

  215. I second most of the above comments (particularly the issue with spaces in OSX)Others:While dragging a file around in OSX if the moment it crosses over the flash window (whether or not I will drop it there, for no just assume I’m dragging something to another folder) Flash will just stop my computer in its tracks for about 10 seconds, I have no idea why.- Recently I’ve had some crashing issues with a large project I’m working on, but I have no idea what’s causing it or even if it’s my fault. It does not happen consistently and reports no errors, so I am at a complete loss. Using Box2d has increased the amount of crashing. With all that said, I have never had my program crash while running the debugger. AGK!

  217. Francis Drouillard says:

Flash CS4 will not launch on by Dell workstation running Vista 64. It gets to the point where the splash screen says “Building Workspace,” then crashes. Try again and it’ll crash at “Initializing fonts.”Advice from Adobe to remove all fonts, then slowly add them back to find the offender is not good. They obviously haven’t tried that on Vista 64 themselves as it can’t be done!

  218. About the help… I preferred the help that was around in Flash 8 – it was simple, it was context sensitive, so I simply had to highlight some class name or such and it’s pop up with the corect help, it was fast (Far, FAR faster than the current one which pops up in a browser very slowly), and it was offline (But supported downloading updated help content when some was available – which satifies all reasonable cause to have the whole thing web based, really.).My only complaint was it’s sometimes get the wrong class – it’d be good if you could make it so that it would analyse code near what is highlighted in order to orrectly display the right definition for the property or method with that name (Especially now, in AS3 there are far more classes with properties or functions of the same name as each other than there was in AS2.).

I am using Flash CS4 for more than a week now. My PC specs are -core i7 9204 GB memory2 ATi HD 4870 graphics card22 inch Viewsonic DisplayIt crashes now and then. Sometimes it crashes when I click on the stage and sometimes just by itself. The project I am working on contains a lot of nested movie clips. The new flash also doesn’t feel any snappier like the older CS3 version. Although it doesn’t crash like every five or ten minutes it still crashes once or twice every three to four hours of usage. If I could figure out what causes the crash I would certainly avoid doing that. I hope it lets me finish my project. Apart from the crashes I have not encountered any other defects with Flash CS4. If the prevalent problems are ironed out then Flash CS4 can be stated as the best Flash ever.

  221. I have just purchased Flash CS4 and am not an very experienced user. After I load and begin to use CS4 it gets very sluggish ex after scrolling. Sometime the right scrollbar will work OK up and down while the bottom scroll bar will sit frozen there for a very long time and it will not respond. I have turned off Virus protection to free up cpu time. Also I loaded Illustrator CS2 andFlash 8 and these sluggish issue are not present.I am extremely dissapointed and can hardly continue my project as this sluggish issue is continuous and repeatible. The web is full of these same issue re CS4 and I realize Adobe is aware, but what steps can I take to improve this situation.I am really frustrated and ready to return this product, I am not a tech gur but have alot of software application experience and this issue is really a major problem.Bill Byrne

  222. Art Held says:

Thanks to the poster and all the comments, I now know I’m NOT to blame! As a beginner with Flash (but 30 year IT guy) when it crashed frequently, I assumed I was doing something wrong, or had a hardware problem (e.g. Vista 64).But I’m finding that activities including scrubbing, setting alpha levels, and blurring, even with the shortest .fla’s (2-4 seconds) easily cause crashes.I assumed I was doing something “odd”. So I followed the TUTORIALS published by Adobe (classroom in a book series) to see how to “do things right”. Guess what? The program STILL crashes frequently! For some time I used the crash report offered when Flash freezes, but now suspect these reports are largely ignored, or only pooled for gross review – certainly not worth my time and effort. Is there a way to submit/post proven crashes and files that cause it – that are reviewed AND RESPONDED TO?This could be a great product – but I can’t see how one can use it in a production environment when it crashes every 3-10 minutes.Again, thanks for the ideas. I sure hope Adobe gets their act together – a premium product at a premium price? Well, at least Adobe has the PRICE part down… 😉

  226. gludion says:

it seems you don’t realize your choices were ill-designed or just wrong (online help, rendering in IDE, new crappy tweens etc..).All the “high thinking” behind this is dubious.Instead of creating new (buggy or laggy) features, commonsense asks: why not making current features just… work normally?Regarding the fact that you are “heavy users” please explain why you release a product with obvious bugs regarding the basic features of the timeline (gotoAndStop(): FP-43, FP-901, FP-1719, FP-1091).BTW, why no JIRA for Flash IDE? It would deserve it, specially if you really want to improve the product.”CS4 = absolute failure” is probably an overstatement, because you probably sold a bunch of (over-priced) licences. But Flash CS4 is unusable, most people I know reverted to CS3.

  227. Rene says:

I have been having problems witht the action script panel too. Everytime I open it it crashes. I have found a work around for it:- Open flash CS4.- Create a new AS3 (needs to be AS3) document.- Open the AS panel.- Close the file without saving anything.- Now you can work on your other files. This is the weirdest thing I have seen in a software.

  228. I agree with Mabel Abal, CS4 is absolute failure. I guess the main driving force behind it is not making usable software but just profit and since there aren’t any noteworthy competitors everything seems legitimate. Adobe makes millions with flash why not invest it in better software instead of just crave for more and more profit.I am using OS X 10.5 and Flash CS4 is just a pain for me. It crashes the finder like every 5 minutes. When switching between spaces a few times the CS4 window “falls apart”. Some panels stay on one desktop others remain on another. When trying to bring them back together the finder or CS4 crash. The performance is also just horrible. I have a project with about 70 classes and about 500 symbols in the library. CS4 won’t allow me to work on some because it becomes so extremely slow (2 seconds of waiting for just a single click (no kidding, same problem on an XP QuadCore Desktop!) ).There are other issues but these to annoyed me the most in the past so i will constrain myself here. Also it is a deep mystery to me how Lee Brimelow can seriously mean what he’s saying:”I have been using [CS4] daily for several months with no major issues.”How much do they pay this guy?

  229. Mister Andy says:

You know, it seems like CS4 is going the way of Vista, but to be totally honest, I’ve only had a couple crashes. To be totally honest, I’m giving CS4 a thumbs up.(but if you guys could fix those bugs, it’d be even better 😀 )

  230. ade says:

My annoying features of CS4, and I’ve been using Flash for 8 years!1. I hate the disguised text input boxes in the IDE, whats wrong with having a traditional white box there all the time, rather than just when you click on it. A waste of development money by whoever thought of that, and the font size is too small2. Whats the deal with the narrow colour selection boxes in Properties and why are the fill and stroke so far apart? Duh? Just because Flash is usually used by peiople who have no concept of usability doesnt mean the IDE should follow that3. The Help needs to go back to how it was in CS3, the online version was always rubbish and i avoid it.4. Had some crashes, but nothing too badI don’t think i will upgrade to CS4 unless things like the Help get fixed, i’d just use Flash Develop.

  231. ade says:

and another thing…The font names need to be the same as you use to embed the font rather than their nicename. I find i have to open CS3 to get the correct name

  232. hardik says:

Bone tool in Flash CS4 is a highly appreciable change but after using it for sometime i feel its not implemented properly.Bone tool behaves pathetically when used for long animation. Poses get distorted while inserting frames or copying poses. Symbols with 0 alpha become visible.Sometimes when we copy & paste a pose it works fine, the first time we do it. But when we do it again, it shifts the position of all the symbols without respecting the original positions or the bone positions and what we will see is long bones connecting the symbols (nothing similar to the copied pose). If i close & re-open the file, i can copy-paste a pose without any problem but again only for 1 time.Another issue is we are not allowed to select multiple frames in armature layer. If i need to delete 100 frames then i have to manually select each frame (that too with right click) and then delete it by selecting Remove frames option from the context menu. (This option is not available in Timeline sub-menu of Modify Menu.! & there isn’t any shortcut for it too!)And What happens if i need to place a symbol behind a symbol in the armature layer? How could i select it again? The upper object now hides the behind object. The only work-around is change the z-order and bring the object in front of the overlapping object. Modify. & then set the z-order again! Shouldnt we have a tree structure to select all the symbols in armature layer? If i connect two or more bones to another bone and then set rotational & translational constraints for one bone, the same constraints affect the other sibling bones as well.. This shouldn’t be the case. If I am connecting a hip bone with two legs and the same hip bone is connected to torso then the constraints for leg movement & torso movement have to be different… And this is not possible with bone tool in Flash CS4…Thus it appears that a lot of rework is needed to improve the Bone tool. It currently appears to be just like a ‘Last minute addition’ to Flash with no proper ‘Testing’ done…I humbly request to please address these issues as quickly as possible otherwise Flash will loose its popularity with lots of other animation packages coming up….

Wow so glad to hear I’m not loosing my mind.I’ve had terrible problems with CS4. I have whole elearning projects that were designed in Flash 8. As a result of having performance and big problems in Windows I thought it was my system I bought a MAC pro to solve the problem. While it is working better I”m still having a ton of issues.Help files are terrible. Why on earth don’t they add something that will let you open the files on your system and add bookmarking!!! I don’t want to see everything thing ever written on the web about my issue I just want the info from the CS4 help file. I’ve actually had to create a database to keep track of all my code snipets.- My biggest concern right now is dynamic text changing when I edit a movie. I open my Flash 8 files and all the dynamic text has changed to some other font. On opening it asks me to substitute a font I tell it Arial Regular it changes all the dynamic font boxes to Arial Bold. I have to manually open every movie clip on the stage and change the font to Arial Regular. NO the search and replace fonts option does not work for this.Next I’m having an issue with dynamic text disappearing on the stage when double clicked. I can’t figure it out. I’ve checked everything, CSS templates, XML can’t figure it out. Same code as was used in Flash 8 and it worked. On the Mac I’m also having problems with spaces. The fla and the tools bar seem to open in different spaces. Now let’s talk about Adobe tech support. It used to be great now it is terrible. I’m tired of being transferred 7 times, asked for my name 7 times and ending up with someone that has no idea how to fix the problem and actually makes me sit while they search Google for the answer. Don’t they think I did that before I called them!!!Sorry to rant but really frustrated.

  235. mjbauer says:

I know that this is an old thread but my copy of Flash (and I seem to be the only person I can find that has this issue) multiple selects everything when I’m working on the stage. It’s like I’m always holding down “Shift” to add to my selection, only I’m not. So if I have ten items on my stage and click on each of them, one at a time, when I finish they will all be selected. It’s annoying, but I haven’t tried reinstalling yet, which might be my only solution.

  236. Christopher Worger says:

Does Flash CS4 have the same “layer count” problem as the older versions. It bugs me.Make “Layer 1” and “Layer 2”. Delete “Layer 2”. Make new layer. In Flash 8 (what I’ve got) and CS3 (my college), it produces “Layer 3”, not “Layer 2”.Does this bug make the source file unnecessarily large?

  237. Chris M says:

Yeah I have to say Flash CS4 is disappointing me. It is crashing a lot for me. I purchased CS4 Design Premium back in January and it seemed fine for a while until I started using Flash more often I started noticing these unexpected crashes. I mean how am I suppose to teach myself how to program in Actionscript3.0 if my software is just crashing all of the sudden. Got this error message earlier :Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime ErrorProgram C:\Program Files\Adobe Flash CS4\Flash.exeR6025-pure virtual function callWhat ever the hell does that means?Im runningPentium 4 2.81.0GB ramwindows xp sp3I thought maybe my machine may just be lacking but it seems a lot of people are having problems.Well hope we all can get some fixes so I can spend more time learning AS3 and less time trying to get FlashCs4 to run smooth.

  238. Hey,When we do a big action (like publishing a large file or moving a big library folder around) and then save the file the fla get’s double the size.So a fla from 188 mb becomes 378 mb.This issue is reproducable from version CS3 up to the latest version of CS4.In combination with the bug of the white-screen-of-death/Java/memory error(that was claimed to be fixed, but wasn’t) it is killing for publishing. When resaving the file to a different name, it becomes the smaller of the 2 sizes again. When will these bugs be fixed?Hope to hear from you. With kind regards,DennisIsioux

Flash CS4 crashed on me 7 times today, even after downloading the update. Every time I try to change the color on dynamic text, it crashes. The font being used is arial. It has also crashed when I go between Flash files working with an xml link and RSS feed. What the hell is going on with CS4? I work for an IT company, General Dynamics, and all 16 Designers use CS4, and Flash is the only thing we’re having problems with. Wish I never upgraded to 4 and kept Flash 3. Please figure it out!?

CS4 does seem to crash an awful lot. It always seems to happen to me, after I copy and paste large vector files from Illustrator into Flash. CS3 had these same issues too. I even ended up buying a new computer to increase performance. Flash had many install issues on Vista 64bit, Adobe support ended up telling me that 64bit was not supported? So I downgraded to 32bit. I have a brand new computer with Intel quadcore 3Ghz CPU with 8GB RAM, Vista business 32bit and Flash performance is still extremely slow with large vector rendering?

is there any way to recover an unsaved file? CS4 crashed a few times everytime i click ctrl+enter to view the movie… and i didn’t save it!! T.T

Ok, so why is it that i can export a simple movie that has nothing but an image in it from flash 8 IDE and it publishes in an instant, try the same simple test in CS4 and well, 5 seconds later i have the same stupid movie… The rendering time is ridiculously slow. It certainly makes one pause before hitting the publish button, do i really want to publish what might take several hours? oh wait, i was looking at my stack of punch cards….Next nag, scaling….why have a constrain button when the only tool you have for scaling is the free transform tool which ignores the constraint lock while resizing? There is also a bug in which clicking constrain and then trying to enter the % value manually only allows you to enter one digit and then focus is lost on the field entry (in my case it was always the height entry field of the transform panel

I recently upgraded to Flash CS4 Professional (from Flash 8) and I’m having trouble making simple buttons. The steps I take are:1. Using text tool, type text for use as button2. Modify/Convert to Symbol (button); name button3. Double click on button to populate Over, Down & Hit frames; return to Scene 1; save and Export SWF MovieResults: When I navigate to page with this newly created button on it the button doesn’t behave like a button (mouse doesn’t turn to hand)Expected results: Mouse should change to hand when mouseover and Over state of button should be revealed. It behaves as though it were Static Text.Am I missing something? Am I doing something wrong? The fact is I have been able to make some buttons work, yet I can’t say what, if anything, I did differently. I’m working on Windows XP Pro Version 2002 SP3; Flash v 10.0.2This is preventing me from making any progress with a site I’m currently working on (and deadline looming). I need some help desperately.

Richardthanks for listening.I am a developer working on a medium sized project, only a few classes but each class is about 1500 lines of code. Nothing on the main stage, all dynamic. The problem I am having is the compile time is ridiculously slow. Like 20-30 seconds per compile. I am running on a dual core 1.5 Ghz with vista so that may have something to do with it but still, testing all day adds up to alot of wasted time. Am I the only person who is experiencing this? I updated to the latest player, turned off my graphics on vista, and deleted my ASO files to no avail. thanks!

I also am getting R6025 Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime ErrorProgram C:\Program Files\Adobe Flash CS4\Flash.exeR6025 Pure Virtual Function callwhen trying to change the document properties to 1280 by 1024 pixels on a Flash Slide Presentation. This is VERY easy to reproduce this bug. It happens every single time. Why hasn’t this been fixed yet ? Do you do any kind of testing before you release software ?

I’ve been a user since the Future Splash ages. Nowadays, Flash is a complex tool with fantastic abilities for programming. However, now I’m trying to put together a file with some reversed frames and simple goto’s and it contantly crashes when loading the file. As soon as I save it, close it and try opening it again it crashes Flash. Have to go back to an older version of the file. This isnt a complex file. This is stuff I could do in Flash Five!By the way, when starting Flash the starting screen is on top of everything. I can live with that if the thing works after that.

Given this blog and comments have been going since 1/09 – still thought that I would add my two cents. The changes in Flash CS4 AS editor makes the IDE something I want to avoid when coding.I know my issues might be 64bit-Vista related and will see how it performs on Windows 7 – but I can’t code in Flash CS4 if I have to wait 1/4 of a sec for my keystrokes to appear in the AS editor.
