Selection tool

Select, move, resize, rotate, and skew objects.

 



 

To: Do this:
Select an object Click the object.
Reposition an object Drag the object’s edges.
Resize an object’s height and width Drag a corner control point. Hold down Shift and drag to maintain the object’s proportions.
Rotate an object Drag a corner smart point.
Change an object’s center of rotation Drag the rotation smart point.
Skew an object Drag a side smart point.



Path Selection tool

Create, delete, and move path points.

 



 

To: Do this:
Create a new path point Click the path.
Select path points Click to select a single path point. Drag to select more than one path point.
Move a path point Drag the path point.
Delete a path point Right-click the path point and choose Delete from the pop-up menu.
To add tangent control bars Select the path points, and then choose Selection Editor > Create Tangents.
Reshape a path Drag the tangent control bars.



Rectangle tool

Create and modify rectangles and squares. Use the Selection Editor to set colors and other attributes.

 



 

To: Do this:
Create rectangles and squares Choose Selection Editor > Style, and then click the Solid button under the Paint Bucket icon.
Apply a fill color Choose Selection Editor > Style, and then click the Solid button under the Paint Bucket icon.
Change the fill color Choose Selection Editor > Style. Hover over the color selection box next to the Paint Bucket icon and then select a color from the color picker.
Remove a fill color Choose Selection Editor > Style, and then click the None button under the Paint Bucket icon.
Set the stroke width/i> Choose Selection Editor > Style > Stroke. Hover over Width and then drag the slider.

 
When you draw a new object, it has the same styles as the last object.
If the object has no fill, choose the Selection tool and then click the object’s edge to modify it.



Circle tool

Create and modify circles and ovals. Use the Selection Editor to set colors and other attributes.

 



 

To: Do this:
Create ovals and circles Drag to draw an oval. Hold down Shift and drag to draw a circle.
Apply a fill color Choose Selection Editor > Style, and then click the Solid button under
the Paint Bucket icon.
Change the fill color Choose Selection Editor > Style.
Hover over the color selection box next to the Paint Bucket icon and then select a color from the color picker.
Remove a fill color Choose Selection Editor > Style, and then click the None button under the Paint Bucket icon.
Set the stroke width Choose Selection Editor > Style > Stroke.
Hover over Width and then drag the slider.

Line tool

Create a line Select the Line tool, and then drag to draw a line.
Snap lines to 45°angles Hold down Shift and drag.
Apply a fill color Choose Selection Editor > Style, and then click the Solid button under the Pencil icon.
Change the fill color Choose Selection Editor > Style. Hover over the color selection box next to the Pencil icon, and then select a color from the color picker.
Remove a fill color Choose Selection Editor > Style, and then click the None button under the Pencil icon.
Set the stroke width Choose Selection Editor > Style > Stroke. Hover over Width and then drag the slider.



Pencil tool

Use the Pencil tool to draw a path.

 

 

To: Do this:
Draw a path Drag somewhere in the document.
Reshape the path Drag path points.
Set the stroke width Choose Selection Editor > Style > Stroke, and then drag the Width slider.
Apply a fill to the area within the path boundary Choose Selection Editor > Style, and then click either the Solid or Gradient button under the Paint Bucket icon.
Remove a fill Choose Selection Editor > Style, and then click the None button under the Paint Bucket icon.

 
Note: Each layer can contain multiple objects and represents a state of the layer stack.



Pen tool

Draw paths by defining path points.

 

 

To: Do this:
Create a path point Click anywhere in the document.
Create a line Click to create a second point.
A line forms between the points.
Extend the path Click to create additional path points.
Each new path point is added to the path.
Reshape a path Drag a point to create a tangent, and then adjust the tangent to shape the path.
Close the path Click the first path point again.



Layout Text tool

Create text that you can easily lay out, format, and flow between text boxes.

 



 

To: Do this:
Create a default text box Click anywhere in the document.
Create a custom-sized text box Drag on the stage.
Change the style of individual characters and words Select the text and use the Selection Editor to change only the selected text.
Change text layout and wrapping Drag control points to adjust the text box.
Flow text between boxes Drag the smart point from the first to the second text box.



Art Text tool

Use the Art Text tool to create text for titles and labels.

 



 

To: Do this:
Create art text Click anywhere in the document.
Set the font size Drag to create a text box that has the desired font size.
Edit the text Type in the text box.
Resize text Drag control points.
Apply a stroke to the text Choose Selection Editor > Style, and then click either the Solid or Gradient button under the Pencil icon.
Apply a fill to the text Choose Selection Editor > Style, and then click either the Solid or Gradient button under the Paint Bucket icon.
Modify gradient colors and direction Use the Gradient Fill tool.
Apply a drop shadow Choose Selection Editor > Filters > Add Filter > General > Drop Shadow.
This also adds drop shadow to the filters available in the Filters submenu.

You cannot change individual characters in art text. To change individual characters, use the Layout Text tool.



Gradient Fill tool

Create and modify gradient fills. Use the gradient fill line to modify the gradient color and position.

 



 

To: Do this:
Apply a gradient fill Select the Gradient Fill tool, and then click the object.
Add a color to the fill Click the gradient fill line to add a color control point.
Set gradient colors Hover over a smart point below the gradient fill line. Select a color from the color picker.
Adjust a gradient color’s position Drag the color’s control point on the gradient fill line.
Remove an inner gradient color Drag the color’s control point off the gradient fill line.
Change a gradient color’s opacity Hover over the smart point below the color’s control point. Drag the Opacity slider in the color picker.
Move gradient start and end points Drag the start and end points above the gradient fill line.
Switch between linear and radial gradients Hover over the smart point to the left of the gradient fill line. Choose Linear or Radial from the pop-up menu.
Create an oval gradient Drag a radial gradient’s control point.



Gradient Stroke tool

Create and modify gradient strokes. Use the gradient stroke line to modify the gradient color and position.

 



 

To: Do this:
Apply a gradient stroke Select the Gradient Stroke tool, and then click the object.
Add a color to the gradient stroke Click the gradient stroke line to add a color control point.
Set gradient colors Hover over a smart point below the gradient stroke line. Select a color from the color picker.
Adjust a gradient color’s position Drag the color’s control point on the gradient stroke line.
Remove an inner gradient color Drag the color’s control point off the gradient stroke line.
Change a gradient color’s opacity Hover over the smart point below the color’s control point. Drag the Opacity slider in the color picker.
Move gradient start and end points Drag the start and end points above the gradient stroke line.



Zoom tool

Zoom an entire document or a selected area.

 

 

To: Do this:
Zoom an entire document Click anywhere in the document.
Zoom out Hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac) and click.
Zoom a specific area Drag to select the area.
Zoom to a specific size Choose a value from the Zoom Selector menu.
Return to 100% view Double-click the Zoom tool.
