Adobe MAX 2009 in Los Angeles - October 4-7 2009

Here are sessions I will be doing at MAX this year, but there are many more for you to check out. Historically MAX has always been an event for developers, but in the past few years we've started adding content for designers as well, going into the depth of our creative solutions (read Adobe Master Collection) adding content around designing for Print, Web, Interactivity, and Video. Well then, in a reality where Designers and Developers increasingly collaborate (or should be), it is necessary, if not critical, to mix and match both worlds and discover what each can do to accelerate business through alliance.

InDesign CS4 In Depth
Leave my hands-on lab with the power to harness InDesign for both print and digital publishing projects. Whether you're a novice or an intermediate InDesign user, this lab will walk you through creating and publishing a document from start to finish. Learn how to set up a new document, import text and graphics, create styled tables, keep track of links, apply creative effects to your design, preflight using custom profiles, and ultimately publish your document for print or the web. This comprehensive session will include tips and tricks to help you deliver documents in less time, with fewer clicks. [Skill: General Audience; When: Monday, October 5th at 5pm, and Tuesday, October 6th at 8:30am]

Muito obrigado São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro!

Panoramic view of Rio de Janeiro

My four days in Brazil were incredible, to say the least; and I want to thank everyone whom I have met and had the privilege to talk to. Starting with the events at the Photoshop Conference 2009 in São Paulo, the interviews for Desktop, and PhotoshopPro magazines, the presentation at Editoria Abril, and the fantastic InDesign User Group meeting (and that's just the first day!). Then there were the schools: ESPM in São Paulo, and Estácio de Sá in Rio, but the show was broadcast to all other campuses around Brazil. Then there were agencies, such as Young, and publishers such as Projac-TV Globo. Forgive me if I have forgotten anyone. But in short: thank you! Muito obrigado! The energy and interest I felt for our Creative Suite 4 Applications was intense.

Спасибо Москве!

Спасибо Москве! Я глубоко смирился по количеству людей, которые пришли, чтобы Adobe Creative Suite 4. Спасибо.

The Creative Future event in Moscow is now over. Well, I have to say that the whole day was overwhelming. It was incredible to see so many of our Russian friends so excited about the Creative Suite, so full of curiosity, and interesting questions or feedback. I can truly say that my colleagues Paul Burnett, Karl Soulé, and myself are deeply humbled by the welcome we experienced. So again, thanks to all of our friends in Moscow for attending this show.

The main hall of the Creative Future event in Moscow. 15 hours prior to kick-off.

The day prior to the event (with a timer on the big screen) we stayed on location prepping for the event and making sure that everything will run smoothly.

An almost full house during the plenary session at the Creative Future event in Moscow

During the plenary session, after an incredibly entertaining theatrical performance from the local Adobe team, we each had about 20 minutes to do a quick overview of Adobe Creative Suite 4 Master Collection. Paul did Web, Karl video, and I did Design of course.
Then we split into separate rooms to do our breakout sessions. I did two: one on Photoshop Lightroom 2 and integration with Photoshop CS4, and then an in depth dive into the new features of Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium. Both the sessions were packed, but I have to say that the Lightroom presentation beat them all (over 300 people in a room that could seat only 250).

And now onto San Francisco to work on some new AdobeTV episodes. Stay tuned for the CSInsider|Design show!

Creativity at Adobe MAX 2009 - Don't just attend, be part of it!

Adobe MAX is an experience unlike any other; it's an opportunity to connect with thousands of designers, developers, partners, executives, and Adobe staff for education, inspiration, and community.

From October 4 to 7, MAX'09 will be hosted in sun-soaked southern California at the Los Angeles Convention Center and Nokia theater location next to L.A. LIVE, a one-of-a-kind entertainment campus. Host to the GRAMMY® Awards, Emmy® Awards, American Idol finals, and hundreds of other events, L.A. LIVE brings downtown Los Angeles alive with world-class venues, restaurants, cafes, and cinemas, including Lucky Strike Lanes, the GRAMMY Museum℠ and the legendary Conga Room. Wohoo! Yup, that's the other side of MAX, mingle and party hard. But seriously: historically MAX has always been an event for coders (no offense to anyone), but in the past two years we've started adding content for designers as well, going into the depth of our creative solutions (read Adobe Master Collection). We were able to create cool sessions around designing for Print, Web, Interactivity, and Video. These sessions rocked and were extremely well attended. Well then, in a reality where Designers and Developers increasingly collaborate (or should be), it is necessary, if not critical, to mix and match both worlds and discover what each can do to accelerate business through alliance.

Last week we started working on content development for Adobe MAX'09 with a Call for Sessions and Labs. If you, as a designer riding the wave of technology, would like to propose a session or a lab for MAX 2009, please complete the forms linked to below. The MAX team will then review the proposals and formulate the agenda for the Adobe event of the year. We truly look forward to reviewing your proposals.

Details:
Adobe MAX 2009 Call for Sessions and Labs will end April 15, 2009 midnight PST.
MAX team goal is to have all sessions, labs, and speakers selected by May 15, 2009.

So get them creative juices flowing! Check out the Adobe MAX Website for an idea of what sessions, and labs, took place in previous years.

One week at CeBIT

Rufus Deuchler showing Adobe Creative Suite 4 to the audience at CeBIT 2009

This week, both Jason Levine and yours truly are at CeBIT in Hannover (Germany) doing Creative Suite 4 Product Demonstrations. So what is CeBIT, you might be asking yourself? Basically, CeBIT is a trade show where over 4'000 exhibitors from just under 70 countries present their digital solutions, trends and innovations.

The Intel Core i7 processor Extreme EditionJason and myself are on duty at the Intel Pavilion, a space entirely dedicated to their microprocessors. Intel's products are designed to deliver a great computing experience for all sorts of workflows and situations. Particularly, Intel just introduced the Intel Core i7 processor Extreme Edition, which was installed on our demonstration machines (with Windows Vista 64Bit). 3.20 GHz core speed with 8 processing threads, the size of my thumbnail, made the Creative Suite applications fly. Truly. Jason and I have experienced a great difference in speed. Actually flabbergasting.

The fact that we were on the Intel booth during the time Apple announced the new Mac Pro with next-generation Intel architecture, including four cores on one die and an integrated memory controller, was kind of exciting. In a slightly nerdy way. We are definitely on the brink of a new era of user experience when it comes to the creative business. Whilst Adobe Creative Suite 4 is your shortcut to savings, in terms of time (and time being money...), these new technologies leverage everything we've been working on to make our software faster. So we are very glad that we were able to be in the Intel Pavilion, as new standards were being defined. Stay tuned.

Upcoming events: Moscow, San Francisco, and São Paulo

[Edited Feb 25, adding São Paulo]

Just a quick heads up for two events I will be presenting at in the near future:

Creative Future, Moscow, March 13, 2009

  • Friday, March 13: Creative Future in Moscow. Paul Burnett and Karl Soulé will be joining me there for a full cross media demonstration of Adobe Creative Suite 4 (CS4).

  • Wednesday, March 18: San Francisco Adobe Illustrator User Group chapter meeting. This is a great opportunity for me to meet with Illustrator Users in the Bay Area since I will be in the area to record new episodes for my AdobeTV show (CSInsider|Design).

  • March 23-25: São Paulo, Photoshop Conference 2009. I will be doing the keynote there, and this will also be a great way to get to know our users in Brazil.

I hope to meet some of you there.

Italian CS4 Tour, coming up! Siete pronti?

Just a quick note to all of our friends in Italy. The CS4 Tour is about to start and will hit the following cities: Bologna (Jan 27), Padova (Jan 29), Firenze (Feb 03), Torino (Feb 05), and Bari (Feb 11).
Adobe CS4 On The Road is an event that was developed to both present the new Adobe Creative Suite 4 (CS4), and give in depth insight as to how it fits in various workflows which include Design, Video, Web, and Photography. Even if your feel you are specialized just in one of those areas of focus, you will get the information you need for your job, but you will also be able to discover how your work can seamlessly integrate with the other workflows too, migrating your content from one media to the other, and hence see how you can widen your horizon and your business potential.
It's not to late to register, and you can find more information here.

A "warm" thank you to the Nordics and the Benelux

It has been some time, but after a few days without a graphics card on my MacBook Pro, I am now using my old machine to get back online.
Just a quick note to the 7000+ users who have joined Greg, Jason, and myself on the fantastic Creative Suite 4 Launch Tour throughout the Nordics (Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark) and the Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands). Thank you!
The tour has taken us to Oslo, Helsinki, Stockholm, Aarhus, Copenhagen, Malmö, Goteborg, and back to Copenhagen (that's right, there were so many registrations that we had to organize a second day, which was also packed). Then on to Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Brussels, and Antwerp.
An appropriate title for this post may also have been "planes, trains, automobiles, and a ferry"...
In any case, our CS4 demonstrations in the realms of Design, Web, and Video were always very well received. As a matter of fact, many have told me that they could not wait to have that new box on their desks.
Yes, CS4 is truly an incredible and not to be missed upgrade. Enjoy, and be creative!

Swiss Publishing Week, a blast!

SPW_logo.jpgAfter only three years since its inauguration, the InDesign Konferenz (yes, the one with the big K) was established as one of the most important Publishing meetings in the German speaking part of Switzerland. The enormous success led the three organizers, Haeme Ulrich, Michael Mayerle (both from Ulrich Media), and Martin Spaar (Publisher magazine) to overdo it this year. With a new event, branded Swiss Publishing Week, the name itself naturally became the schedule: one whole week of conferences, workshops and hands-on around the topic of Publishing in general.

MadinSpain, but still sane

Today I had a one hour slot to talk at an annual international event on design named MadinSpain in Madrid. The conference gathered really interesting speakers that managed to inspire the 1000 or so designers who chose to spend their Friday out of the office.
The morning session included presentations by the Spanish artist and designer, Alberto Corazón, Albert Folch Studio (who presented without a computer, but chose to project their work filming it live on a table before them; now how cool is that?), and Lamosca (being an info graphics freak myself, I truly enjoyed what was shown).
After the lunch break, it was my turn to show off what we at Adobe do to make creative pros go wild! The crowd gave me really good vibes; thanks Madrid, and remember the very important and useful Paleta Apariencia.
Muchas Gracias Madrid!

Adobe Creative Suite 4 (CS4) to be announced September 23

Those of you who have checked the Adobe.com website today will have noted that the CS4 announce date has been set. Now, you could be asking yourselves, why is it necessary to announce the announce date... well, here's your answer: the event will be broadcast, and you need to register to view it. Cool! So make sure to be there and get the scoop on what's in store.
From the Adobe website: "Are you ready for something brilliant? Be one of the first to see Adobe® Creative Suite® 4 in a special web broadcast on 23rd of September, 2008".

September road

Here are some events I will be talking at in September.

MadinSpain'08 (Madrid, Sept. 12-13)
This year, MadinSpain, the annual international event on design, will be at it's 3d edition. It will be held in the Palacio de Congresos in Madrid. Personally, I will go mad in Spain talking about how to best use integrated workflows with Adobe Creative Suite. Loco!

Swiss Publishing Week (Winterthur, 15-18)
After years of successful InDesign Konferences (yes, the one with K), the organizers have decided to give the event a broader aspect and touch all areas of print publishing. There will be two fully packed days on InDesign, and after that the themes will also touch Photoshop, the Creative Suite in general, color management, and print to web. Hop Schwiz!
Oh, and by the way, there will also be the upcoming meeting of the Swiss InDesign User Group.

Photokina (Köln, 23-28)
The Photokina is the world's biggest trade fair for the photographic and imaging industries. It is held in September every 2 years at the Cologne Trade Fair, Germany. Photoshop anyone?

Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, an ending at the top

kuala_lumpur.jpg

The events in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur were the last two scheduled stops in the Asian leg of our Masters Tour. Both were very successful with hundreds of professional users cheering and laughing, and of course learning about the Adobe creative workflow. The sheer amount of blogs that talk about our presentations is incredible.
The event in Kuala Lumpur was hosted on the Observation Deck of the KL Tower. What a way to end this trip. Truly at the top.
Again, I thank all the people involved in making this tour a such a success, and all of our friends who chose to attend a 6 hour presentation, thus giving up a whole working day. Thank you all! And remember, being creative is all about having fun and experimenting!
After a three week trip, I am so ready to return home to my family. Tired, but incredibly motivated to go on.

Masters Tour in Taiwan and Hong Kong

This Asia trip that I am doing together with Greg and Jason is truly inspiring. Yesterday we did our Masters show in Taipei, flew to Hong Kong in the evening and performed again today.
It is truly amazing that hundreds, thousands, of people chose to take a day off work and come watch us for five hours as we go through a truly integrated workflow, using all of the applications in the Adobe Master Collection CS3. The live feedback we get from our audiences is what gives us the strength to move on. The attention, the heads nodding, the cheers and the laughter are our blessing. Thank you Taiwan and Hong Kong.

感谢台湾和香港

Next stops Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

Seoul (서울)

Yes, one word. That is all that comes to my mind. Now, that was an incredible event. The entire team at the Adobe office in Korea managed to get about 3'000 creative professionals into one room to listen to what Greg, Jason and yours truly had to say, for an entire day.

MorningSessionFullPano.jpg

The "Adobe Masters Class 2008" in Seoul was a huge success, and that's a euphemism. After a morning session, where we presented an integrated CS3 workflow to produce content for print, web, and video, we split into three separate sessions.
Mine was a three hour design track, during which I took my audience through Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop Extended, InDesign and Adobe Kuler. The korean audience, typically very quiet and reserved, was cheering and clapping at every feature, old and new, that was shown to them and explained in depth.

Later, when we gathered up in a general session where there was a lucky draw, we had dozens of fans asking for photographs and autographs. Well, that was certainly a first for me.

Greg, Jason, and I left Korea asking ourselves "was that for real?".

Thank you Korea! - 당신을 감사하십시오 한국

Now to Taipei, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur.

Nordics tour. Wow, and thank you!

Four countries, 7 cities, 9 days; Helsinki, Oslo, Malmö, Götheborg, Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Aarhus. I had the great opportunity to talk to about three thousand of our friends. What I showed in the three hour presentation included the Appearance Panel, working with Symbols, and Live Color in Adobe Illustrator CS3. I then went to show just how cool the kuler color community is; and remember to post your own colors (who knows, maybe yours will be "most popular"). After that we got an in depth look at how Object Styles can make your work more efficient in Adobe InDesign CS3.
That is also when I showed the fastest way to get a Photoshop file into an InDesign document. Thank you all for not answering that the fastest way would be a "copy and paste", which would obviously be wrong.
Here's a little reminder:

drag_drop_photoshop.jpg

Yes, just drag and drop the icon onto your InDesign page. This is the fastest way!

CS3 A tutto ritmo - Day 3

Today Paolo Santoro, Matteo Oriani, and yours truly are in Florence, my home town (so to say). How could I miss that?
Attending were about 150 friends from Tuscany, and beyond. Again, in the four hours of the presentation we went through a complete workflow that included InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop Extended, Dreamweaver, and Acrobat. The thing that marvels me each time we do that, is how much users still do not know, and how much I can learn from their questions. Truly inspiring.
The tour now goes to Mestre and Rome. I will be in the Nordics, so Michela di Stefano, and Alberto Comper will be replacing me.

Grazie a tutti quelli che hanno partecipato! E' sempre bello poter insegnare e imparare qualche cosa.

CS3 A tutto ritmo - Day 2

Day two of the tour. Today we are in Arese, a city North of Milan.
What I forgot to mention yesterday, was that this entire tour has been organized in schools. This is actually a pretty cool idea because it has virtually no cost, and is a win/win situation. The school gets advertised for free to a broad range of professionals from the field. I mean, how many times, as a Designer, have I been asked "what school would you recommend for a good graphic design preparation?". Now I have a few more answers. And we get access to large auditoriums for our presentations.
Today, in Arese, the school has asked to do the presentation to their students in the morning (the same we will be doing to professionals and companies in the afternoon). Like I said, win/win.

CS3 A tutto ritmo - Kicks off!

Today, yours truly is in Turin speaking at an event organized by Adobe Italia. This is the first stop of a tour that will take us through six different Italian cities. Just under 200 friends from all over the are where pushing on the doors forty-five minutes before start.
I am here with my colleagues Paolo Santoro and Matteo Oriani. Each one of us has a different role in the workflow. Paolo is the InDesign layout artist, Matteo is the Illustrator guy, and yours truly is the Photoshop geek. Together we show the audience a workflow that will take them through most of the new features in Adobe Creative Suite CS3 Design Premium (yes, the one with Dreamweaver, Flash and Photoshop Extended).
Thank you Turin! Next stop Arese (Milan)

Touring Scandinavia like Vikings on their longships

The InDesign Longship Greg and yours truly will be touring Scandinavia in May to show you how to best use Adobe Creative Suite CS3 Design Premium in your creative workflows and production. We will be focusing on InDesign as a hub for putting together your assets, but we'll also touch Photoshop Extended, and Illustrator. During the three hours of our presentation, we’ll be looking at the possibilities these applications can offer and demonstrate their tight integration. We'll be going over each application and also explore some workflow integration with Adobe InCopy. With Greg, we'll also show how to best prepare your documents for XHTML export, and then rapidly edit the CSS in Dreamweaver to publish content on the web.

CS3 Tour in Italy. Mamma mia!

For the end of April, beginning of May, Adobe Italy has organized a tour to show what it truly means to work within the Adobe Creative Workflow. We'll be touching Turin*, Arese*, Verona, Florence*, Venice, and Rome (I will personally present at the shows marked with *).
And, since these events will be in italian I will continue the description in the language of Dante.

Creative Suite for Cartographers at IMTA

Today I am in sunny Estoril, a small town just North of Lisbon (Portugal). Why am I here? Well, for the International Map Trade Association (IMTA) Annual Conference & Trade Show, of course.
The International Map Trade Association is the foremost worldwide organization of the mapping, geospatial and geographic information industry.
I presented three sessions on Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium, of which two were geared towards migrating from QuarkXPress to InDesign, and from Freehand to Illustrator. All sessions included information specific for cartographers, who, by the way, are users that tend to push Illustrator to the max.

Adobe Masters Tour: Vienna

Today in Vienna, there were just under 200 of our Austrian friends.
Now is also the time to look back upon the Adobe Masters Tour, and realize that more than 1500 users throughout Germany and Austria have seen us demonstrate cross-media / cross-applications workflows. The impression I got from meeting the audience is that this way of working, of thinking, or approaching projects really fascinates everyone.
The event was a full six hours, and I mean, this is almost like watching Sergei Bondarchuk's "War and Peace" (1968); but as during the other stops nearly everyone put up with us until the very end
As with everything, in the end is the reward; apart for having had the opportunity to go through all the applications with us, attendees were in for a lucky draw to win a Master Collection. So Jason picked a sheet out of the box... and the winner is Helmut W.! Unfortunately, Helmut was one of the few that left the room before the end. So Jason had to pick another lucky winner.
Thank you Austria.
Greg is off to Ireland, Jason to the Netherlands, and yours truly is flying to Portugal tomorrow morning.

Adobe Masters Tour: Hamburg

Hamburg is sadly our last stop in Germany. As in the other cities, the audience (approximately 250) was glued to their seats for the whole six hours of our cross-media / cross-applications demo. This time the venue was too small to accommodate everyone and seating was organized outside the movie theatre.

After the TOCA ME Design Conference

The theme of this year's TOCA ME Design Conference was "beyond surface". Who's the person behind the idea? What's the story behind the artwork?
The event had two parts, a conference, and an exhibition where selected works and projects from local and international artists were shown. And a lounge of course, with designer furniture, music drinks, and food.

Adobe Masters Tour: Cologne

Third stop of the tour. 18 hours of presentations behind us; but the day was, again, action packed.
In Cologne we had an audience of approximately 480 participants; all glued to their seats for the six hour of our cross-media/cross-applications presentation.
This time, Greg even managed to throw in a good presentation of the Spry framework for Ajax. The Spry framework for Ajax is a JavaScript library that gives you designers easy-to-use yet powerful Ajax functionality to your Dreamweaver documents, and which allow you to build pages that provide a richer experience for your users. It is designed to take the complexity out of Ajax and allow designers to easily create Web 2.0 pages. And believe me, I am a print designer, I have used Spry in some websites I designed without a problem. It has changed the way I think about designing web pages; give it a try!
So, if you have not yet done so, proceed to download the Spry Updater for Dreamweaver CS3 now. The downloads also contain the JavaScript library, documentation about the framework, and sample files that show how you could use it.
Tomorrow is a traveling day. Back to Munich for TOCA ME Design Conference on Saturday.

Adobe Masters Tour: Frankfurt

Jason Levine in action at the Adobe Masters Tour in Frankfurt
Greg, Jason (depicted here while talking about the puppet tool in After Effects), and myself left Munich right after the show to catch the next flight to Frankfurt, where we arrived late in the evening.
At 12pm we started our second Maters Tour Show with an audience of approximately 250.
One of the attendees came to me and told me that the show was "spannend". That was probably one of the nicest compliment we could get. Spannend means "suspense-packed". And, yes, a cross-media workflows are enthralling. Something that only a few years ago was unthinkable, due to compartmentalized workflows and responsibilities, is now effectively a reality. I am personally thrilled to see that the audience recognizes the benefits of thinking outside of the box and embracing this new way of thinking about assets, design, and publishing in general.
This is the Adobe workflow we are showing. We just wish we had more time to show even more; although in the last two days we did over 12 hours of presentations.
Next stop Cologne; we hear rumors of a very large crowd... stay tuned.

Adobe Masters Tour: Munich

This first stop was impressive; just under 400 users came to watch Greg, Jason, and myself.

What we do, during this tour is a simulation of a creative workflow. We are the agency: Greg (Web), Jason (Video), and me in the Design department. We literally use the entire Creative Suite CS3 - Master Collection, including Bridge, Illustrator, OnLocation, Photoshop Extended, Fireworks, After Effects, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Premiere, Flash, and Acrobat, to create, manage, and publish our assets. Cross-application and Cross-media. The whole enchilada!
Next stop Frankfurt.

TOCA ME Design Conference 08

Anyhow, TOCA ME is an event which gathers top designers from all over the world. Following this year's catch-phrase is "Beyond the Surface", designers will present their projects created in various creative areas such as print, web, product design, all the way to video and interactive installations.
