Fw or Ps effects mapping flexibility

Fireworks CS5 allows for better importing of psd files.

There is one small feature which is overlooked by many people that the effects in the psd file can be converted to native Fireworks effects or matained as Ps effects. In both the cases the attributes for these affects can be edited individually and independentaly.

How to map the effects while the import/open of psd.

Goto Preferences and check the following option shown:

Once the preferences have been edited, open the psd file with the following custom option in the import/open dialog:

Once this done, ex: a drop shadow with PS effects will be converted to drop shadow of Fireworks. There could be a rendering difference and depends on the designer to use the best of both worlds.

This is a feature which is not engineered for CS5 but exists from version CS4 onwards.Share on Facebook

Moving Fw assets across machines

If you have custom panels, extensions and other Fireworks assets you would like to move from one machine to another, just copy the appropriate sub-folders under the location mentioned below into the new machine:

WINDOWS XP:

<OS Drive>:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Adobe\Fireworks CS5\

Vista/Win 7:

<OS Drive>:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Fireworks CS5\

MACINTOSH:

\Users\<username>\Library\Application Support\Adobe\Fireworks CS5\

Once the files from the corresponding sub-folders have been copied, restart Fireworks on the new machine and you will see the same state of fireworks as previous system.

Bringing Fireworks CS4 shortcuts into CS5 version

Shortcuts are a way to make a creative professional feel like a pro and also increase the efficiency manifolds. Adobe Fireworks CS5 released and you would like to bring in the shortcuts from CS4 version to CS5. Follow the below process to make that possible.

The shortcuts are xml files which are stored in correspondence to the application.

MACINTOSH:

The shortcuts for Adobe Fireworks CS4 application on macintosh platform is stored in the following locations. You can copy those xml files from CS4 locations and copy them to the corresponding Fireworks CS5 locations.

  1. /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fireworks CS4/<language code ex:"en">/Keyboard Shortcuts/
  2. <Adobe Fireworks CS4 app location>: Right click on the app and select "Show Package Contents". Then follow the path at Contents/Resources/<language project file ex:en.lproj>/Keyboard Shortcuts/

Generaly the default is "Web Standard.xml". You can confirm this by launching the app and looking at the menu item Fireworks->Keyboard Shortcuts. The "Current Set" field drop down menu with show the currently applied shortcuts to the app.

WINDOWS:

The shortcuts for Adobe Fireworks CS4 application on windows platform is stored in the following locations. You can copy those xml files from CS4 locations and copy them to the corresponding Fireworks CS5 locations.

Win XP

  1. C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Fireworks CS4\<language folder name ex: English>\Keyboard Shortcuts\
  2. C:\Documents and Settings\<logged in username ex: sarthak>\Application Data<this is hidden folder>\Adobe\Fireworks CS4\<language folder name ex: English>\Keyboard Shortcuts\

If your operating system is in a different drive than "C:" then you will need to look in the corresponding directory location on that drive.

Win Vista/7

  1. C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Fireworks CS4\<language folder name ex: English>\Keyboard Shortcuts\
  2. C:\Users\<logged in username ex: sarthak>\AppData<this is hidden folder>\Roaming\Adobe\Fireworks CS4\<language folder name ex: English>\Keyboard Shortcuts\

If you have a 64 bit machine/OS, you will have to replace "Program Files" with "Program Files(x86)" to find the correct location of xml files.

Use the same set of customized shortcuts of Fireworks CS4 into CS5 and feel at home. You can go ahead one step more and diff the files using any freely available tool and move only the selected ones.

Page navigation shortcuts

Pages are a boon to Fireworks since their introduction
in CS3 release. There is a built in Keyboard navigation facility for iterating through all the pages in the document of a Fireworks png file.

The ‘PgUp’ and ‘PgDn’ key does the trick of navigation. Even when the focus is on the canvas, the keyboard shortcuts will work.

Incase you are editing a field or entering some values/text in any of the panels then you will need to exit that editing field and then the shortcut will work for you. Simplest way is to click on the canvas to gain focus on the main area of the application.

This keyboard navigation is valid on Windows and Mac.

Change canvas/image size for all pages at once

With multiple pages now in a Fireworks png file, it can difficult to re size the canvas or the image size one by one for each page. An often missed settings in the "Canvas Size" or "Image Size" dialog is the check box named aside "Current page only"
. It is shown below in the dialog.

Canvas Size- Current page only setting

By default it is checked, but the settings are remembered across multiple Fireworks sessions.A quick time saver option now known to all you Fireworks designers!

Preserve rectangle roundness while scaling

Fireworks CS4 and earlier versions allow for defining the roundness of rectangles. The roundness gets distorted when any of the transformation tools are used like Scale, Skew or distort.

If you know the approximate height or width values for the rounded rectangle, then you can enter the values in Properties Inspector in the width and height fields and the roundness will be preserved. This is a HUGE time saver.

CS4 Text woes workaround

Users facing the text bounding box issue can breathe a sign of relief as there is a workaround for that problem. As a temporary solution is through an extension which will correct all text objects whose blue colored bounding box has been shifted in the document.

Important Note:

  1. Running this script will correct the bounding boxes for all text objects in the document affected by this bug. This correction is limited for that png file edit session only. The bug may be encountered again during future file edits where the extension script will need to be executed again.

  2. Any CS3 text element if present inside a Group ONLY will get re-rendered on running this script. After installing this extension, you can access this script from Commands menu–>Re-sync Text

  3. This extension will not touch any text elements containing missing fonts. The missing fonts dialog pops up when opening a png file which contains fonts not found on the system.

Thus there is no need to worry about CS3 text and missing text getting re-rendered unnecessarily on using this Extension.

Re-sync Text Bounding Box is a simple Extension which will go through each and every text element present in a png document (be it inside a page or a layer or a state) and re-align its bounding box.

EXAMPLE:

The following is the screen shot of a file which got affected by this problem.

After running the extension script mentioned in the above link, the following is the state of text objects.
