Adobe FrameMaker (2015 release), Update 4

FrameMaker (2015 release) – Update 4 released

I’m happy to announce the fourth update to FrameMaker. This important update adds many enhancements to the Adobe Experience Manager connector and makes it compatible with the newly released XML Documentation Add-on for Adobe Experience Manager, Adobe’s new DITA CCMS.

In addition, we have made generic enhancements and fixed some important issues. I would like to extend big thanks to all those who’ve contributed by reporting issues and helping us improve the product.

In this post you can find all the updates and fixes that we made in FrameMaker (2015 release), Update 4.

User Interface Enhancements

Organized List of Items in the Format Menu

Earlier when you clicked Format > Fonts (Characters or Paragraphs), FrameMaker showed you a list of fonts installed on your system in a multi-column layout. If you had a long list of fonts on your system, the list would cover up the whole FrameMaker user interface. Now, when you click Format > Fonts (Characters or Paragraphs), FrameMaker organizes the list of items in a single column. If the list is long, you can use the up and down scroll icons to quickly traverse the list of items.

Adobe Experience Manager Connector Enhancements

New Review Comments Pod to Track and Manage Review Comments

You can now sync, view and reply to review comments received on a DITA Topic using the new Review Comments pod in FrameMaker. An author initiates a review task for a single topic or multiple topics from the Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) interface. Multiple reviewers can review the Topics and provide review comments. They can also view comments given by other reviewers in real-time and post replies.

You can open the new review pod in > View > Pods > Review Comments...

FrameMaker (2015 release), Update 4, has a new review pod to track and manage review comments.

Support for HTTPS

You can now use HTTPS to establish a connection between FrameMaker and AEM.

Integrated Search with XML Documentation Add-on for AEM

FrameMaker’s repository search is now seamlessly integrated with Adobe Experience Manager. If you use the repository search feature in FrameMaker, the search is performed in the DITA content within the AEM repository. For this feature to work, your Adobe Experience Manager server must have the XML Documentation Add-on installed.

FrameMaker (2015 release), Update 4, offers integrated search for DITA content in the XML Documentation Add-on for Adobe Experience Manager

New Adobe Experience Manager Options in the Preferences Dialog

The Preferences dialog box is updated to include configurable options for Adobe Experience Manager connector. You can use these options to set up file check-in and check-out preferences for AEM. Additionally, multiple usability enhancements are made in Connection Manager dialog and the repository manager window.

Bug Fixes

We’ve fixed 5 bugs as well:

  • While creating or updating a standalone TOC for an unstructured document in structured mode, the information for generating the TOC file is now retained. An empty file is no longer getting generated.

  • When connected to the AEM server, if the file has unresolved cross-references or text insets, it no longer fails to check-in.

  • When setting up a FrameMaker-AEM connection over VPN, the connection is now successfully made.

  • When you try to import or export an EDD file for an Arabic document, the settings are now replicated correctly.

  • In FrameMaker, if you checkout, edit, and save the file and then try to check-in the same file, you are no longer prompted to save the file again.

For a complete overview of all of enhancements and issues fixed in FrameMaker (2015 release), Update 1, Update 2, Update 3 and Update 4 please refer to the release notes.

  1. Is there a way to get the Format>Fonts back to displaying a long list of fonts across the screen, if we’ve just updated to 5? I came into a job where the Framemaker 2015 application on my work computer apparently must’ve last been last updated with update 3, because when I just updated to 5, I now have that long scrollable list, which I don’t like as much. I searched thru preferences, etc, hoping to find a way to change it back, but then I don’t see such a way. Thanks for any help-

    1. Hi Chris,

the font menu was changed to a scrollable list. This was necessary, as the old multi-column menu caused many problems for users with a lot of fonts.

That said, you might want to consider to define paragraph/character styles and define the fonts in the style, instead of assigning a font manually. This makes it easier to apply a formatting to a larger amount of content, avoids creating manual formatting overrides that can get easily lost when updating a style later and is more “future proof”.

      Kind regards,
      Stefan Gentz

      1. Thanks — we actually already have well over a hundred paragraph styles, for various headings, lists, paragraphs, etc. Occasionally, when formatting and copyediting a document with heavy statistical equations, I sometimes need to change the default font (Arial) to either Times italic, or to Symbol….this is only on a single character here and there, though. I hadn’t thought of creating a CHARACTER style for this….where I can just highlight what I want to change, and make one click, and it’s changed….so thanks for the suggestion! (There actually already was such a style for Symbol, and I didn’t even know it, because I aleays kept the Catalog tab on the Paragraph Catalog, rather than the character-level catalalog to the right of it…)

  2. I can not find the fonts pod. And I reported bugs to Ajit. He remotely connected and verified.

    Where is the fonts pod?

  3. Does this update fix any of the high dpi issues associated with using Frame Maker on small ultrabooks like the Microsoft Surface Pro 4? Last I checked, FrameMaker was the only current app that I use that still has uneven icons sizes or tool interfaces on the Surface Pro 4. SP4 has a 2700×1800 display in 12.3″ form factor…Nearly all adobe apps work fine on it, but FrameMaker seems to be lagging in support.

  4. Hi Abhishek – it’s great and it works fine for automatic update. Thank you! Where can I find the update to download? On the page, you wrote, is the newest update-file for update 3.1. Some customers aren’t able to update automatically.
Best regards from germany to india, Ute

    1. Hi Ute,

      Thanks for getting in touch.

We are working on updating the page with latest build. This time it took a bit longer to get updated due to some internal issues.
You’ll be able to download the build from the same page in a couple of days time.

      Apologies for the inconvenience caused.

      Regards,
      Abhishek
