Get started with InDesign CC | Top 10 things for beginners

indesign-100x100In this episode of Adobe Creative Cloud TV, Terry White shows you how to get started with Adobe InDesign CC and the 10 things beginners want to know how to do.

In a little less than 44 minutes (a bit long, but worth every second), Terry White will take you through:

Creating a new document, placing graphics, fitting graphics in frames, adding text, formatting text, working with swatches, creating and applying styles, adding page numbers, wrapping text, and exporting to PDF.  In addition, there are lots of tips and tricks thrown in.

If you’re new to InDesign and just getting started, these are probably the best 44 minutes you can invest in.

InDesign CC 9.2 | What’s new and changed

Adobe InDesign is the industry-standard publishing application for print publications, interactive PDF documents, digital magazines, and EPUBs. A new version of InDesign CC (9.2) is available now. It comes with several enhancements, bug fixes, and a brand new feature.

 

 

 

 To install InDesign CC

  1. Go to http://creative.adobe.com and sign in with your Adobe ID.
  2. Click Download Center in the top navigation bar.
  3. Click Download icon next to the InDesign icon.
  4. On the InDesign product page, click Download. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

What’s new and changed in InDesign CC 9.2

Typekit Desktop Font Integration

Typekit desktop fonts are now fully integrated with InDesign. With this seamless integration, Creative Cloud customers can now easily:

  • Find missing Typekit fonts in your documents and sync those fonts from Typekit.
  • Browse and add new fonts from the Typekit Website.
  • Find your synced Typekit fonts quicker in the Font menu with the new Typekit font filter.

Hyperlinks Simplification

The major pain points around creating, editing, and managing hyperlinks have been addressed in this release of InDesign:

  • Creating a hyperlink in InDesign is now incredibly simple. You can create a hyperlink with just a right-click gesture.
  • Hyperlinks now have a separate Hyperlink character style – blue and underlined.
  • Edit hyperlinks from right-click menu.
  • Quickly identify errors in your hyperlinks with traffic light indicators.
  • Quickly navigate to the hyperlinks within your document from the hyperlinks panel.

 EPUB enhancements

  • You can now create footnotes that popup over the page you’re reading.
  • InDesign now provides more accurate representation of exported text color, tables, and nested styles in the exported doc and the CSS.
  • The CSS handling of native InDesign objects, images and groups has also been improved.
  • New support for additional list types and text align last within CSS properties.
  • Create books for the Japanese market with improved support for Ruby, J Vertical Composition which includes TCY and Auto TCY.
  • Create books for the Arabic market with more complete handling of right to left direction languages.

Critical bug fixes

  • Marked improvement in cross-references performance.
  • Text selection or highlight behavior is restored (similar to CS6).
  • Active preflight profile appears in the document status bar.
  • The Color Theme setting now does not automatically get reset to Medium Dark on updating InDesign.

InDesign CC | Sync Settings using Adobe Creative Cloud

When you work on multiple computers, managing and syncing glyph sets, menu customizations, keyboard shortcuts, custom workspaces, and PDF presets among the computers could be a chore.

The new Sync Settings feature enables individual users to sync their settings using Creative Cloud. If you use two computers, for example, one at home and another at work, the Sync Settings feature makes it easy for you to keep those settings synchronized on these two computers.  Also, if you have replaced your old computer with a new one and have reinstalled InDesign, you can get the application set up quickly with all your settings in place by just pressing a button.

The syncing happens via your Adobe Creative Cloud account. All the settings are uploaded to Creative Cloud and then are downloaded and applied on the other computer. All sync operations are initiated by users, and they cannot be scheduled or performed automatically (such as at launch or during shutdown).

Note: At any given time, you can activate InDesign on two computers only.

Prerequisites for this feature to work

  • Computers should be connected to the Internet.
  • You have signed into your Adobe Creative Cloud account on both computers. 

Sync settings at first launch

After installation, when you launch the application and create a document or open an existing document for the first time, you will see a prompt asking whether you want to start the sync.

  • Click Sync Settings Now to initiate the sync.
  • Click Disable Sync Settings to disable the feature.
  • Click Advanced to open the Preferences dialog, where you can choose and customize what items are synchronize. 

Using the sync settings feature

Do any one of the following:

  • [Recommended] Click the Sync Settings icon (Sync-icon) at the lower-left corner of the InDesign active document window, and then click Sync Settings Now.
  • Click Edit (Mac: InDesign) > {AdobeID logged in} > Sync Settings Now.

Sync settings on successive launches

When you launch InDesign with prior sync information available, and create a document or open an existing document for the first time, you will see a prompt asking whether you would like to sync the setting from the cloud. To initiate the sync, click Sync Settings Now.

The settings are downloaded to your local computer. Once the download is completed, click Apply Now in the left-bottom corner of the document status bar.

If you change glyph sets, keyboard shortcuts, custom workspaces, or PDF presets, you should initiate sync before you close the application. You can see the sync status in the left-bottom corner of the document status bar. Click the Sync Settings icon (Sync-icon) in the status bar and then click Sync Settings Now

Choose what you want to sync

Navigate to the Preferences > Sync Settings tab:

  • Click Edit (Mac: InDesign) > {AdobeID logged in} > Manage Sync Settings.

  • Click Edit (Mac: InDesign) > Preferences > Sync Settings

Select the checkboxes for the settings that you want to sync. You can also choose what to do in case of conflict.

Note: To sync your settings successfully, you must change the settings only from within the application. The sync settings feature does not sync any file that is manually placed in a folder location. 

Choose an option in case of conflict

There are situations when the system could detect sync conflicts. Sync conflicts occur when the system is unable to determine whether you want a setting from Creative Cloud or from your local computer to be retained since both have been changed after the last sync operation.

Suppose that you change PDF presets on your work computer and sync settings to the Cloud. You then go home and change the same presets on your home computer without syncing with the cloud first. Now since the settings in the cloud and the settings on your home computer are both updated, conflict occurs when your try to sync. If you try to sync in this state, you see a conflict prompt.

  • Sync Local: Sync local settings on this computer to the cloud; overwrite the cloud version with the local version of settings.
  • Sync Cloud: Sync from the cloud to this local computer; ignore changes made to the local settings and replace them with the settings in the cloud. 

What’s not synced

  • Keyboard shortcuts created for Windows are synced only with a Windows computer. Similarly, Mac keyboard shortcuts are synced only with a Mac computer.
  • Assets saved to a custom location are not synced.
  • Any modifications (for example: rearrangement of panel) made after creation of the Workspace will not be synced. For Workspace syncing, first set up your working environment and then create a workspace and initiate the sync process.
  • Multilingual syncing is not supported.

InDesign CC | Generate QR Codes

Download TrialYou can now generate and edit high quality independent QR code graphics from within InDesign. The generated QR code is a high-fidelity graphic object that behaves exactly like native vector art in InDesign. You can easily scale the object and fill it with colors. You can also apply effects, transparency, and printing attributes, such as overprinting, spot inks, and trappings to the object. You can copy-paste the code graphic as a vector graphic object into a standard graphics editor tool such as Adobe Illustrator.

To generate QR code in InDesign

  1. From the menu, choose Object > Generate QR Code. The Generate QR Code dialog box is displayed.
  2. In the Content tab, select any one of the following data types in the Type drop-down list: Web Hyperlink, Plain Text, Text Message, Email, or Business Card.

  3. The Color tab shows Swatch List. If you want to apply a specific color to the QR code, switch to the Color tab and select a specific color. By default, the generated QR code is Black with transparent background.
  4. Click OK. If you have selected a Frame before generating the QR code, the code is placed directly in the selected Frame replacing its content. Otherwise, the QR code is loaded on the Place Gun and you can place it just like a traditional EPS object.

Once placed inside a document, the QR code is treated as a traditional EPS object, except that a tooltip appears on hovering over the object, revealing the content details in the form of the embedded code.

Modifying the QR code’s frame attribute

The default background of a QR code frame is transparent. However, you can change the Frame’s Fill and Stroke attributes such as Color, Line Style, and Thickness using the traditional controls.

Transforming the QR code object

You can move, resize, or rotate the placed QR code object with the Selection tool. When you drag the frame’s box, only the frame resizes. However, while dragging:

  • If you press the Shift key, the aspect ratio of the frame is preserved.
  • If you press the Ctrl (on Windows) or Command (on Mac) key, both the frame and the content scales with preserved aspect ratio.
  • If you press the Shift + Alt (on Windows) or Option (on Mac) keys, the frame scales from its center with unpreserved aspect ratio. You can press the Shift key to preserve the aspect ratio.

The new Adobe Exchange panel is now an in-app experience for you to explore, discover, and install content, plug-ins, and scripts that you can purchase or download for free. If you produce scripts, templates, plug-ins, or anything that can enhance the functionality of Adobe’s Creative applications, you can quickly package, submit and make them available to a larger community.

Adobe Exchange even lets you privately share products. For example, you can package up a series of images, InDesign templates, and other files. Anyone with who you have privately shared the products can install the content and see any updates you make. The experience is very much like an app store.

To open the Exchange panel, go to Windows > Extensions > Adobe Exchange.
