Adobe RIA ~ The beauty of Design with Technology (TC)

Adobe ~ The beauty of Design with Technology (TC)

Here's a presentation material (Traditional Chinese) for Adobe technologies in e-Publishing at Sept 17, 2008.
Download file

Agenda:
1. eBook
* Change and unchange in publishing (by PDF and Flash)
Evolution of e-Book:
-- Static text e-book.
-- Simple multimedia e-book (video and audio).
-- FLYP Media is an good example using the publishing thinking to generate a new electronic style. (e.g. Book card, poster, template style)
-- Grimm Press and Guru Bear use video streaming in their Illustration. From physical book publishing to illustration streaming. Never think before! This really a new business model.

2. Fashion
* The meeting of Reality and Virtual (by Create Suite)
-- How to attract new group of customers? Style.com may be an answer.
-- Style.com is a product when Vogue tries to discover the new relationship among designers, bloggers, and their services (ads, magazine).
-- Their traditional web site is focus on information sharing, not much on social networking.
-- Now it provides you fashion with cover story, best-to-buy, interactive voting.
-- It also provides you different group of information, from video, blog to designer news, all stands the base of social networking.
-- At last, it tries to earn your attention at their ads and magazine subscription.

* Anthropologie
-- Physical boutique (Anthropologie) to Virtual boutique (Anthropologie.com).
-- All virtual boutiques can give you the latest information in more intelligent way compared to traditional catalog.
-- That’s why they use Flash and Adobe AIR to categorize their products interactively.

3. Consumer Electronics
* The generation of Content-to-go (by Flash Lite)
-- Flash Player is ubiquitous because there are 800 M connected PC installed and 800 M devices (400 models) shipped.
-- For the FY2007 financial report, you can see the revenue of Flash license was 50 M or above. And this business was 40% growth from year-to-year.
-- However, Adobe decided to free its license fee, remove the use restriction, announce the technology specification of API and data push.
-- It’s a game of give and take. When it’s free, Flash and AIR will become truly ubiquitous.

4. Streaming integration
* We can build up the new world (by Flash Media Server)
-- Flash video is a dominant format in the networking by high network consumption, popular user interfaces, and nearly installed in every connected PC.

-- Many players have used Adobe technologies to build up their business. We can see they are not the video producer or media related corporation. However, these cross-media break through the new market model.
Cross media to Web Video:
+ Video blog: YouTube in US (from network). I’m Vlog in Taiwan (from TV).
+ Network TV: On.cc in HK (from press). Olympics TV in CCTV (from TV).
+ Others: MySpace, hulu, MTV, NBC, Fox, CNN. NYT

-- Online interaction provides a personal platform to communicate with others immediately and face-to-face. e.g. Lunchtimers (games), Ustream.TV (live broadcasting), Moqulus (personal TV), MTV (online editing), Tokbox (video meeting), Viddler (video commenting).
-- In technical, I cannot see any difference between video streaming and data streaming. In business, you can see a new business can be lighted up when you change your positioning slightly.

5. Using Adobe in all directions
-- Now Adobe Reader 9 can play Flash 9 natively. It’s a new opportunity if you want to publish a rich multimedia e-book supporting online / offline and security.
-- FLYP media: Photo and Illustration design (PhotoShop and Illustrator) => Publishing (InDesign) => Export (Flash / PDF)
-- Antropologie.com: Graphics and Interaction design (PhotoShop and Flash) => Web version (Dreamweaver), AIR version (ActionScript), and maybe Mobile version in future (Device Central – a mobile emulator of flash content)
-- Grimm press / Guru Bear: Image (PhotoShop) => Animation (Flash) => Video Streaming (Flash Media Server) => Play (Flash Player)

6. Ending
-- Content is King
-- Personalization
-- Less is More
-- Interactive Relationship
-- User Experience. Not UI only

Acrobat 9 -- Feature matrix (EN, TC), Brief and Function (TC)

Some information about Acrobat 9. Most are in Traditional Chinese.

Acrobat 9 Feature matrix (EN)
Acrobat 9 Feature matrix (TC)

Acrobat 9 Product Brief (TC)
Acrobat 9 Functions (TC)
Acrobat 9 Pro Extended brief (TC)

Following idea of Lori movie Office of the 21st Century,
I made a Web version (TC)
and a A9 PDF version (TC)

BTW, I used FLVPlaybackCaptioning in Flash CS3.
The easiest part is technology (flash video, playback, caption integration). Less than 30 minutes.
The most difficult part is making caption, including translation, voice-and-caption synchronization (e.g. 00:00:03.279), add some expression and transition, transparency of the caption background, regulating size and position, testing again and again. I made this for a whole day.
I do respect to caption makers and dubbing professionals.

Acrobat 9 for Government (TC)

Presentation file (Traditional Chinese)

I'll host a 3 hour seminar for Acrobat 9 to Government customer at June 5.
I'm still waiting the official release of Reader 9.

What's the usage?
(1) PDF Portfolio in one PDF = RFP -> Proposal -> Review -> Presentation -> Close project
Customer: RFP in PDF Portfolio containing some fillable PDF forms.
Vendor: Reply RFP and append proposals to the PDF Portfolio.
Customer: Using Collect to merge RFP responses into CSV or XML.
Customer: Distribute vendors' proposals to reviewers. (Benefit: Reader only)
Vendor: Formal presentation (Benefit: Adobe Reader 9 contains Flash Player 9 and all video are converted automatically into Flash Video format. They are 100% cross-platform and self-sustainable)
Customer: Close project and summarize a report based on RFP and proposals

(2) Whenever you try to email / send-via-IM / copy-to-USB with a compressed file,
I suggest you can use PDF Portfolio instead. One PDF for worrying less and managing less.

(3) High compression in PDF. All contents can be converted to PDF in one-click.
For secure, consistent, easy-to-view and long time archiving, converting Email + Office + Image + Scanned file + 2D/3D CAD + Publishing + Web pages + Multimedia (flash, video, audio)

(4) More secure with 256-bit AES Encryption.

(5) Better export in Word and Excel. e.g. Multi-column, currency, etc.

(6) OCR with ClearScan -- a technology of Bitmap-to-Vector.
Provide you all possibilities in Searching, Copying text, and Editing.

(7) PDF Forms -- Very cool. Trace who has reply and who hasn't. Re-send or Stop / Extend collecting.

(8) Web Capture -- Become highly accurate even capturing multi-column, flash material, etc.

(9) Compare documents -- Very useful for comparing images, presentation files, etc.
It can detect what you deleted and moved !

Others:
(10) Adobe Presenter 7 -- a best selling e-Learning tool. Now it supports Webcam, PDF-export, etc.

(11) Conavigating: Based on Acrobat.com Beta. Waiting for the release.

(12) GIS support: It works with 4 registration locations. Still thinking it's usage.

Acrobat 8 hands on training (TC)

Here's a training material (Traditional Chinese) for Acrobat 8 Professional.

(1) Guide (Presentation)
(2) How To (Step-by-step Hands on)

I hosted this training for four districts from Feb to Apr, 2008 talking the advanced usages of Acrobat 8.
(1) Engagement
(2) Long term Archiving -- Special or Self-created characters can be embedded in PDF. That's why PDF is portable and we need PDF to be ISO standard.
(3) PDF Package -- Compressed files always bring virus / malware together. PDF can serve as a container that can contain PDF and other formats (Office, Image) into one PDF package.
(4) Project / Document Management -- Downsizing from 30-MB source files becomes a small 3-MB PDF.
PDF has relatively high compression at Presentation, Photo, Scanned document, and 2D/3D CAD.
(5) Batch processing -- Just one step to finish OCR, Numbering, Adding Watermark and Adding Security for multiple source files.
(6) Review -- Done by Comments, Redaction and Digital Signature easily
(7) Form Design -- for marketing survey and groupware workflow using Acrobat Professional and Reader only.
(8) Add Interaction -- Embedded Flash and movies into one PDF. It's really portable without any bad link.
(9) Tips -- Support RSS, Adobe Labs (Digital Editions, Ads for Adobe PDF, Buzzword, SyncIn, Mars Project)

Adobe RIA -- Flash, Flex, AIR (TC)

Adobe CS3 and Flash Media Server 3 (TC)

Here's a presentation(TC) for Adobe CS3 and Flash Media Server 3.
Download file

Agenda:
(1) Why YouTube success?
(2) Usage of Flash Media Server in YouTube, BBC, Accelerade, HD, Viddler.com, Remix, Spike TV
(3) Mobile streaming
(4) Adobe Media Player
(5) CS3 Production
(6) Tryout

Highlight:
(1) Point out you can be the next YouTube.
-- Flash Media Server provides Web DVR and Social Media networking. These are very unique features of FMS.
-- Even RealPlayer chooses Adobe Media Player and FMS as their solution because of Web DVR.

(2) 80% web video streaming format is Flash Video
-- The ROI of BBC iPlayer is 800% growth.

(3) Kevin Lin is a concept basis when we try to talk about 24 hours Endurance Run event by Accelerade (a drink) and Dean Karnazes (ultra-marathon man)
-- Live Streaming by FMS. Fully high performance and highly scalable.
-- If someone says we don't have this high bandwidth, you can suggest the following.
-- Suggest using 200-Kbps content instead, so for 5,200 concurrent connections, it needs 1-Gbps only.
-- For Accelerade case, it used 312-Kbps content, so it needs 38-Gbps for 128,000 concurrent connections.
Also, the highest peak of bandwidth is predictable. e.g. at the last 30 minutes.

(4) Every device is a small computer and IPTV is coming.
(Refer to http://www.adobe.com/solutions/broadcast and the Forrester research paper)
-- Sony Bravia will build-in Flash.
-- Compared to the poor quality of current web video, Flash 9 provides HD (H.264) quality is the best choice for IPTV.
-- When you try to play some web video, you can highlight the multi-camera switching, editing and replay.
These features can be implemented by FMS, Remix, Premiere and After Effects, etc.
-- Viddler.com provides Commenting / Syndication by FMS
-- MTV, YouTube and PhotoBucket use Adobe Remix (a express version of Adobe Premiere) for online editing.

(5) Ads, content provider, audiences all need the creative thing.
-- You can see many great samples of user generated content.
e.g. If you are the guy of guys, you must watch Spike TV (Viacom)
-- FMS provides Video-on-Demand (VOD)

(6) Taking photo (e..g. at 101), sharing video --- all because of the Wisdom of Crowds.
-- FMS provides mobile streaming by Flash Lite 3.
-- Adobe Media Player can be streamed through FMS.
All content catalog, banner and overlay Ads are set by RSS and ATOM.

(7) Flash + Plug-in = Flex + AIR SDK = Both can create Flash (.swf) and AIR (.air) by your familiar Adobe tools

(8) CS3 provides production workflow
-- Plan by PhotoShop & Illustrator. You can reuse all content at Flash authoring & Video production
-- Capture using free Flash Media Encoder (FME) and/or Adobe OnLocation CS3
-- Edit by Adobe Premiere Pro CS3
-- Visual Effects by Adobe After Effects CS3
-- Audio Editing by Adobe Southbooth CS3
-- Deliver using FMS. Provide you from Web to HDTV. From personal HD movie to web streaming infrastructure

(9) Get tryout at Adobe.com.
-- FMS Developer version is free and limited to 10 concurrent connections only.
-- flash on: showcases of Flash video and Flash.

(10) Now is Media 2.0. Cross-media and Cross-platform are king. That's why you need Adobe.
-- PC – most are Windows and Mac
-- Handphone – most are Nokia (Symbian)
-- HDTV, PDA, Billboards – most are Linux.
-- Adobe flash is a 10+ years proven technology and keep promise on cross-platform and cross-media.
