“Growing up in communist Yugaslavia, my dad always itched for a better life, so he decided to risk everything. Telling no one he was fleeing, he attempted to kayak across the Adriatic to Italy one night, only to be caught and sent to a refugee camp. Through decades of hard work, insufferable living conditions, he found stable work and ended up living comfortably in the US. It’s this incredible resolve to keep going even when the situation looks bleak that continually inspires me to try harder and aim higher. My dad braved life-threatening situations in the hopes of better opportunities for his family—the freedom to live in a democracy, a college education, even an internship at a major Silicon Valley software company. Sretan Dan očeva tata!”
