On Friday, July 3, the Australian Green Team ran a morning tea in the Sydney office to kick off the Plastic Free July campaign. The green team and other volunteers prepared delicious food, all without the use of disposable plastic opting to carry in reusable containers instead. The goal was to raise awareness about plastic pollution and what easy steps everyone can take to decrease it whenever possible. Employees can pledge to not use any single-use disposable plastic items in July and beyond, or at least avoid the Top 4 (plastic bags, straws, takeaway coffee cup lids and plastic water bottles).
Did you know …
Australians use about 6 billion plastic bags per year. That is a whopping 300 per head!
90% of marine debris in our oceans is plastic
Some plastics needs 500 years or more to degrade
All the plastic we have ever produced is still on this planet
“Think about it…why would you make something that you are going to use for a few minutes out of a material that’s basically going to last forever. What’s up with that?” – Jeb Berrier, BagIt movie.
We had a great turn-out with 45+ people attending and were able to collect over $106 in gold coin donations to support Two Hands Project (www.twohandsproject.org), a collaborative approach to dealing with plastic pollution: take 30 Minutes and Two Hands to clean up your world anytime, anywhere. They also run educational projects with a focus on marine debris for schools, councils and businesses.
July is Be Involved Month at Adobe, a time when employees around the world mobilize to give their energy and skills to local charitable organizations and the causes they support.
