New app from the Republic of Ireland commemorates Irish culture & St. Patrick’s Day

DP imageIn time for St. Patrick’s Day, the Royal Irish Academy, in conjunction with its partners, announced today a new, interactive app produced with Adobe Digital Publishing Suite that engages users with the history and culture of Ireland.  Exploring the rich heritage of the country through the lens of significant cultural objects, the app, “A History of Ireland in 100 Objects”, not only marks St. Patrick’s Day, but also Ireland’s ascension to the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Rich with video, audio and animation, the app showcases Irish history and culture through the country’s treasures.  Designed to promote engagement with the country’s ideals and heritage, the app immerses readers into the country’s history and encourages them to learn more.

“Fintan O’Toole, a journalist from The Irish Times, launched the project in 2011 with a series of newspaper columns highlighting 100 objects from Ireland, the UK and Norway that connect with Ireland’s rich past,” writes Joe Zeff, whose design firm produced the app.  “Those columns became a hardcover book, and that book became the series of apps that we designed and developed for multiple platforms using Adobe Digital Publishing Suite.”

Seeking to make the app available to the widest spectrum of users possible, the Royal Irish Academy used the multi-platform functionality of Digital Publishing Suite to deliver the app on iPad, iPhone and on Android tablets, including the Amazon Kindle Fire. The iPhone version is of particular note because it delivers formatted, well-thought out content that fits the on-the-go consumption habits of iPhone users – especially to visitors to Irish museums.

The app is free for download until March 31, 2013 and is a project of the Royal Irish Academy, the National Museum of Ireland and The Irish Times supported by the Presidency of the European Council of the European Union and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Ireland.  Preview the app through a short video below.

Adobe and NBC Olympics Join Forces to Bring the Olympics to Mobile Devices

Today, Adobe and NBC Olympics announced the official NBC Olympics apps for the iPad, iPhone and select Android tablets and smartphones. These two mobile apps will provide a huge variety of content – from live streams of all competitive events to short video highlights, medal ceremonies, and more. This is possible because of the partnership between Adobe and NBC Olympics, and Adobe’s ability to provide leading video technology solutions at scale.

Adobe creative tools, including Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, Flash Builder, Flex and others, were used to design and build the apps. Adobe AIR is being used to seamlessly spread the experience across devices and Adobe Pass, the industry’s leading “TV Everywhere” authentication technology, is being used to allow viewers to log in to the apps using their username and password for their current pay-TV subscription. NBC Olympics is also taking advantage of Adobe Auditude and SiteCatalyst to measure and monetize content in both apps.

We believe the Olympics will be a defining moment for digital video and we are proud to play a role. Check out the Adobe Digital Media blog for a video and more information about the apps.

Adobe Advances Broadcast Creation to Delivery Workflows at IBC 2011

This week the Adobe video solutions team is over in Amsterdam at IBC, Europe’s largest show for broadcasters. We announced new video delivery solutions and we’re highlighting our recent momentum that enables media professionals to create, deliver, and monetize premium video more efficiently and across more platforms and devices. Adobe is committed to helping our customers and partners streamline their entire creation to delivery video workflows for any screen and ultimately – help them find new ways to monetize content.

The team is showcasing new products, customer wins and initiatives this week, here are what I see as the highlights:

New Releases of Flash Media Server and Flash Access to Stream and Protect Content for Virtually Any Device

  • On the delivery side, Adobe continues to innovate on new, streamlined workflows for businesses to stream and protect premium content to an array of devices, including iPhones, iPads and Android devices. Adobe is announcing that Flash Media Server 4.5 can now deliver Flash technology to Apple iPhone and iPad devices. Additionally Flash Access 3.0 takes its robust content protection solution to Android, the first of many mobile platforms.

Rapid Customer and Partner Adoption of Adobe Pass Content Authentication

  • Adobe Pass is a leading authentication solution that enables media companies to verify a user’s entitlement to content online based on their pay TV subscription package. We’re pleased that Adobe Pass now supports the top US pay TV providers – approximately 90 percent of all US pay TV households – and is being quickly adopted by TV programmers and media companies like Fox and CNN.

Acquisition of IRIDAS Color-grading Technology

  • Enhanced color-grading is a top requested feature by our Production Premium customers and in continuing our commitment to the professional video space, Adobe has announced the acquisition of IRIDAS and its flagship product SpeedGrade, a toolset for Stereo 3D, RAW processing, color grading and finishing of digital content. With the addition of IRIDAS, Production Premium is expected to gain a comprehensive set of tools so video editors can manipulate color and light for any type of content, including professional film and television.

Strong Momentum with CS5.5 Production Premium –

  • Groundbreaking features and performance in CS5.5 caused demand to surge for our professional video creation tools, growing 22 percent year-over-year, with 45 percent growth on the Mac, in part fueled by the large number of Apple Final Cut Pro customers switching to Adobe Premiere Pro and taking advantage of our Switcher offer.
  • Leading U.K. broadcaster ITV has selected Adobe Story, Production Premium’s collaborative script development tool, to manage pre-production of over 500 episodes per year of the popular programs Coronation Street and Emmerdale. *link to ITV release
  • A strategic alliance between Adobe and the University of Salford in England will bring Adobe Creative Suite CS5.5 Production Premium to all of Salford’s 39 new media and TV courses as part of MediaCityUK, an initiative to grow a new media hub for content creation in the northwest of England.

If you’re at the show – Adobe will be demonstrating our entire content creation to delivery video workflow at IBC 2011 at our booth in Hall 7, Stand 7.G27 in the RAI Convention Center, Sept. 9-13 in Amsterdam.

Digital Publishing Suite + Photoshop Touch SDK = Amazing

Check out this outstanding example of what can be achieved with our just-launched Photoshop Touch SDK, from our friends over at DI Magazine.   What a fantastic idea — using a digital magazine on iPad to drive a Photoshop tutorial on your Mac (or PC). They also developed their digital magazine using Adobe Digital Publishing Suite, in a perfect storm of Adobe digital technology customer ingenuity.

For those of us who have trouble telling their Gaussian Blur from their Clone Stamp, this is revolutionary stuff that will bring the amazing creative power of Photoshop into many more hands.  Woof!

Introducing Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Product Family

Adobe has announced a significant update to Creative Suite, with the unveiling of our first mid-cycle release: Creative Suite 5.5.  This is part of a new release strategy, where we’re moving out our milestone releases (such as CS3, CS4, CS5) to a two-year cycle. Mid-cycle releases will keep designers and developers ahead of technology changes, such as the mobile communications revolution (tablets!) that is radically altering how content is consumed and created.

Some highlights from CS5.5….

  • For Web folks: huge updates to HTML5 and Adobe Flash authoring tools, enabling designers and developers to deliver mobile applications on Android, BlackBerry Tablet OS, iOS and other platforms — and create rich browser-based content across screens. All the big HTML5 checkboxes are ticked in Dreamweaver CS5.5: jQuery mobile framework integration for browser-based content, PhoneGap’s in, as well as WebKit engine updates.  We’ve also launched Adobe Flash Builder 4.5 Premium and the Flex 4.5 framework now includes mobile support.   Now hundreds of millions of mobile devices can be targeted with content and apps, created through our web tools.  Remember, Adobe tools support the development of both HTML and Flash content, don’t let crazy headlines make you think otherwise.
  • For Design and Publishing jocks: Creative Suite 5.5 Design Premium suite builds upon Adobe’s recent product innovations in digital publishing. Using InDesign CS5.5 designers can add new levels of interactivity to their page layouts targeted to tablet devices.  Documents can include video, audio, panoramic views, 360-degree object rotation, pan and zoom of images, integration of HTML and HTML5 content and other interactive overlays.  Creative Suite 5.5 is tightly integrated with Adobe Digital Publishing Suite to support publication, sale and analysis of content on iPad, Android tablets and the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook.
  • For video and audio peeps: Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Production Premium suite delivers awesome performance, workflow improvements, creative innovations, and powerful new audio editing capabilities that build upon the huge customer momentum Production Premium is experiencing with broadcasters, filmmakers and video professionals. The powerful Adobe Mercury Playback Engine, introduced in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5, broadens its graphics processing unit (GPU) hardware support to include laptops and more supported cards, allowing users to open projects faster, get real-time feedback and work more smoothly at higher resolutions.  If you’re at NAB this week in Las Vegas, come check out the buzz at the Adobe booth, where our evangelical video wolverine Jason Levine and others will be demoing to packed audiences.   Also at NAB, we’re hosting a panel with some great young filmmakers, including Gareth Edwards (Monsters) and Tyler Nelsen (The Social Network) on Tuesday.  I’ll be at the booth as well, so stop by, say hi and we’ll hit the tables later.
  • Holy tablet-revolution Batman!  Today also sees Adobe extend the creative process beyond the desktop by helping integrate tablet devices into creative workflows.  The new Adobe Photoshop Touch Software Development Kit (SDK) enables developers to build tablet applications that interact with Photoshop from Android, BlackBerry PlayBook and iOS devices.  Adobe also announced three new iPad applications that demonstrate the creative possibilities of using tablets to drive common Photoshop workflows – Adobe Color Lava for Photoshop, Adobe Eazel for Photoshop and Adobe Nav for Photoshop. Letting a hundred flowers blossom and a hundred schools of thought contend is our policy to turbo-charge Photoshop’s integration into the tablet revolution, comrades.  Unlike some companies we think tablets are here to stay and creatives want to use them for their work.

And one more thing. Today also sees Adobe debut an affordable and flexible subscription-based pricing plan, attractive to customers that want to get current and stay current on Creative Suite products, have project–based needs, or try the software for the first time. New Subscription Editions ensure customers are always working with the most up-to-date versions of the software, without the upfront cost of full pricing. With subscription pricing customers can use flagship products, such as Adobe Photoshop for as little as US$29 per month, Adobe Design Premium CS5.5 for US$89 per month, Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Master Collection for US$129 per month.   Yup, for less than your monthly Starbucks bill (or at least mine) you can have all of Adobe’s creative tools at your fingertips.  I’m a tall-non-fat-wet-cap kinda guy, if you have to know.

Check out Adobe TV for video tours of our new CS5.5 family.  And if you still don’t believe us, one of our execs, Johnny Loiacano has summarized all this news in his own video.

All this software goodness will ship in early May but you can pre-order today.
