I’m not an After Effects user. I don’t mask, layer or animate. I don’t know what it’s like to hear that dreaded sheep sound. But, in a season of serendipity, After Effects has changed the course of my career.

In 2006, I was working as the Director of Marketing for a startup company called Serious Magic. In the spring of that year, a friend of mine told me that Adobe was looking for a marketing manager for After Effects. At that time, there were two things that were on my career list of things I want to experience: one was to work for a startup and the other was to work for Adobe. I jumped at the chance for the interview.

It was the hardest interview I’d ever experience and for those that know Steve Kilisky, former Product Manager of After Effects, you can imagine my delight when I heard I had passed the Steve-test. However, I did not want to move to Seattle having just bought my first home in Northern California. I walked away—hoping I’d have another chance someday.

Six months later, Serious Magic was in the process of being sold to Adobe. I was thrilled to think it a possibility to actually work for Adobe. However, the sales and marketing team were told that Adobe wished to only keep on the engineers through the acquisition. My job hunting had begun.

One week prior to the close of the acquisition, the VP/General Manager, Jim Guerard, met with me and told me that he wished to extend me a job offer. I was surprised but, after further explanation, found that my job interview six months prior was the catalyst to my new career at Adobe. I took a position as the marketing manager for the Production Premium suite and held that position until June, 2012.

In December of 2011, I also took on the After Effects marketing manager position and have been delighted to work with such an amazingly creative team. And how cool is it that I get to lead in the anniversary celebration of one of the world’s most innovative (and coolest) software programs?

Here’s to another 20 years, After Effects. You’ve been good to me!
