Ae & Troy Church

troy_churchThe first time I saw something created with After Effects it brought me to tears — literally. Part of that emotion came from the soundtrack (Pavarotti’s version of Nessun Dorma, which I had never heard), but the rest of it came from the choreography of composited visuals that After Effects made possible in the hands of a talented storyteller.

People have “moments” in life that stand out — in terms of impact or influencing their career direction. That was one such moment for me. I quickly bought my first version of After Effects (2.0, the box still sits on my shelf), and since then my career has been closely related to AE.

In 2001 I returned to formal school. I finished a B.A in Film, then a Masters in Cinematic Interaction Design. My goal was to work at “Adobe or Macromedia” creating the tools that I used every day that were so powerfully impacting the world.

In 2005 I was hired by Adobe shortly after they announced their merger with Macromedia. I’ve been honored to be the interaction designer on the After Effects team ever since.

It’s been said that the best motivation is doing work that is truly meaningful to you. Helping create After Effects has been and continues to be the most meaningful and motivating work of my career.

The best parts of being on the AE team are:

1. The individuals (fun, smart, etc., etc.). They are the reason AE is what it is.
2. Defining and using the new features before anyone else. It doesn’t get old.
3. The friendship, collaboration, and inspiration we get from working with AE artists and the filmmaking community. Thank you!
