In Jules Verne’s novel Around the World in 80 Days, gentleman protagonist Phileas Fogg takes on a whopping £20,000 wager (around $2.6 million USD in today’s currency) from his Reform Club buddies to prove that he can circumnavigate the globe in 80 days. We follow Fogg and his valet Jean Passepartout’s whirlwind journey around the world with Adobe Stock.
The duo’s journey begins in London, England at 8:45PM on October 2nd, 1872. In order to win the bet, Fogg must return to the Reform Club, where the bet was made, by the same time on December 21st.

Fogg and Passepartout board a train headed for Dover, and ultimately, Egypt. Unbeknownst to them, they are being pursued by a detective named Fix, who mistakenly believes that Fogg is a bank robber. Fix tags along on their journey, attempting to capture Fogg at every twist and turn.

From Suez, Fogg bribes the engineer of the steam boat to Mumbai to get them to their destination faster. In India, they discover that the train they were planning on taking to Allahabad has not been completely built. The quick-witted Fogg buys an elephant to finish the last leg of the trip.

They also take a detour to save a woman named Aouda, who is being involuntarily sacrificed at the funeral of her husband. She joins Fogg and Passepartout on their journey back to Europe.

From India, the company travels to Hong Kong. Fix tries to convince Passepartout that his boss is a burglar, but faithful Passepartout refuses to believe him. Unable to sway the trusty valet, Fix instead gets him drunk and drugs him. Passepartout comes to his senses in time to catch the steam boat to Yokohama, but is separated from Fogg and Aouda.

Without Passepartout, Fogg and Aouda miss their ship and are forced to detour to Shanghai.

Eventually, Fogg and Aouda dock at Yokohama, where they are reunited with Passepartout. Now a happy family again, they travel across the Pacific Ocean to San Francisco. Fix gives up on sabotage, allowing the trio to travel in peace.

Their transcontinental journey proves to be an arduous one, filled with herds of bison, collapsing bridges and even kidnappings. With a little luck and a whole lot of determination, they make it to New York, their last port before England.

But their troubles aren’t over yet. In New York, Fogg finds that they’ve missed yet another boat – the one that was supposed to take them back to England. In desperation, they board a ship heading to France and mutiny to reroute the vessel to Ireland. From there, it’s just a train, ferry and another train back to their final destination, London.
