Audition CC and OSX 10.11 (El Capitan)

UPDATE: We have confirmed that the latest beta release of 10.11.1 fixes this issue and allows Audition to run all its plugin effects without any additional problem.  This update also appears to resolve the similar issues found in Audition CS6.  This update should be available to all users Wednesday, Oct 21, 2015.

Attention Mac users:

We recommend users refrain from upgrading to OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) at this time.  Due to changes in application signing, users report crashing with many plugins and native effects.  Additionally, there are many audio devices that will not function without updated drivers, and support has been dropped for many legacy devices by their manufacturers.  Users may also not see the splash screen on launch.

As with most OS upgrades, you may wish to abstain from updating until your applications are confirmed to work correctly, or after any ongoing projects are complete.

The effects that may cause a crash when the UI is displayed are:

  • Analog Delay
  • Chorus/Flanger
  • Convolution Reverb
  • DeEsser
  • DeHummer
  • Distortion
  • Guitar Suite
  • Multiband Compressor
  • Phaser
  • Mastering
  • Single Band Compressor
  • Surround Reverb
  • Tube-Modeled Compressor
  • Vocal Enhancer

MacRumors forums have been maintaining a list of additional software that may not function under El Capitan without developer updates at

When can we expect an fix for this issue!

  • By Jim Browning - 10:55 PM on October 2, 2015

This doesn’t help me AFTER the fact of fact trying to use a number of the effects just causes the program to quit.

This is a fantastic bulletin to publisher the day AFTER the update came out and I updated to El Capitan. You had months to prepare for the changes in application signing. Now, most of the effects I use in Adobe Audition are useless.

When do you anticipate replacing those effects with ones that work?
Do you have a list of which effects cause Audition to crash, or do I have to find out by trial and error?
Can you publish a list of suggested replacements that work until you resolve these tech issues?

Not wanting to jump into the middle of an Adobe bashing party, but I have to agree with Chris on this one. I’ve been reading about testing and application stability with El Capitan for over a year now. It’s frustrating that this wasn’t caught before the update.

Like many here, I have already updated only to find out that the one company I never suspected to have any issues with has been dropping the ball left and right. First the Lightroom fiasco and now this. This is a rookie move that even a startup software company would have caught.

Adobe, you are a joke! You’ve had months to get this ready for public release. I just remembered, I pay you monthly. Awesome!

I noticed after upgrading to El Capitan, Adobe Elements 12 does not recognize USB connected digital cameras.

Using Mac Mini and Nikon S33 digital camera. Did an experiment and Elements won’t allow “refresh list” and will NOT recognize any memory card readers also.

Sorry… but this is not a solution

When will this compatibility issue be fixed? I upgraded to El Capitan without seeing this notice and now Adobe Audition won’t even load. What support are you providing for this issue and how/when will it be resolved?

    • By durin - 3:50 PM on October 13, 2015

Audition should work fine, with the exception of about a dozen effects which were licensed from iZotope and which can crash Audition when attempting to open the effect UI.

Will ADOBE let us know any time soon when El Capitan is SAFE for ADOBE CC AUDITION use? I dont have any plug-ins yet… but just started using it for podcasting.

Do you know when an update is likely to be forth coming? I know you should never just blindly upgrade to a new OSX without understanding its impact…but I’ve blindly upgraded to the new OSX without understanding its impact!!!!

Oh thanks, really useful to know this only after the update’s been released. The beta has been available for weeks. Didn’t you think to check it? It’s not like you couldn’t have emailed to flag this up. You don’t seem to have any issues emailing any of the other crap you send me.

Any timeframe for fixes to Audition? It crashes when I apply a simple audio effect to a track.

  • By Scott Borhauer - 3:40 PM on October 7, 2015

I have already updated my OS. So what do we do now. Do you have a patch. I have most things working. J

When i go to Effects rack and Amplitude and Compression Multiband Compressor it crashes every single time. When will you ahe a fix for this.

Geeesh… It sure would have been nice to know this before upgrading to El Capitan. Maybe it’s just me, but I would have thought Adobe would have had access/knowledge of changes in application signing, or issues with audio drivers. Why didn’t Adobe advise through Creative Cloud that users of your software would have these problems, and should abstain from updating until given a thumbs up to do so? Kinda late, saying this now, don’t you think?? Is this a “hidden gem” of being a member of the creative cloud? Response to this email would be appreciated, so I know somebody at Adobe at least read this message.

when will Adobe Audition CC be compatible with the Mac OX el Capitan 10.11 update? i updated to this yesterday without even thinking to see if Adobe would be compatible and it’s kind of screwed me over. Audition CC is a crucial software piece to my job so i was just wondering if there was any idea when it would become compatible?

Please fix this ASAP. I already upgraded to El Capitan and can’t go back. I also need to use Audition immediately. Please advise

When will Adobe and/or Mac (working together hopefully) find a fix for the incompatibility of Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan with Adobe Audition CC 2015? I really need the features of Audition that currently cause the program/app to quit each time immediately upon opening that feature. I pay monthly for CC and may have cancel subscription if this is a prolonged problem beyond a couple of weeks! (Just problem started for me Oct 08, 2015).
Can we be informed of when this will be fixed?
Also, if nothing is intended to be done about this, PLEASE let me know now so I may seek out other audio software that can work with El Capitan 10.11 and cancel my costly subscription with Adobe.

Did none of the dev’s of these software products have access to a beta where they could have known in advance that there were issues with OS X El Capitan? Isn’t that why Apple makes these early releases available to developers in the first place? What was your developer team doing while all of this was going on?

At the very least the warning could have been issued in a more timely fashion, instead of after the public release of El Capitan and all of the associated issues. For early adopters like me, it’s too little too late. That’s very disappointing and I now have to wait until ‘who knows when’ for a fix while I’m dead in the water with some of my Audition functionality.

Isn’t it interesting how mac lays out this notice of java running time se bullshit and not a link to update java leaving it to the mystery gods.

This is seriously assbackwords that mac is the photoshop kind of artists, directors, and graphic designers and the one program necessary to keep java alive gets thrown out with the bathwater.

Apple has a hell of a problem and you can multiply me by hundreds of thousands..

I am waiting to update the blog post until I have confirmation that the upcoming 10.11.1 update fixes this issue. I have updated it with additional links to iZotope’s site, as well as the effects that will invoke the crash.

  • By Brian B - 4:48 PM on October 13, 2015

Guys I can confirm that the latest Beta of El Capitan (beta 3) fixes the crashes in Audtion. I was going crazy because I needed the plug-ins to work and so i signed up for the public beta and went ahead and installed the latest. 15 minutes later I was back up and running and “Single Band Compressor” which was crashing Audition every time, was now working!

So go ahead and grab the beta. Nothing to fear!

This is such a joke. The entire CC has been the biggest failure Adobe has had in it’s history. I host a huge podcast and am on hold until this gets figured out. Not to mention my photography business has been affected by the horrendously slow Lightroom. I’m about done with you Adobe.

  • By Justin Barclay - 8:39 AM on October 14, 2015

I think I’m with many of the other comments here. This isn’t really a fix is it?

Please update us when there actually is one.

  • By Jean Dorais - 9:33 AM on October 14, 2015

Well that’s BLOODY BRILLIANT– thank you so very much for telling us NOT to upgrade to 10.11….AFTER 10.11 is released. And NOT telling us in a pop-up…just post it in an FAQ/Forum.

This piece of crap has already cost me 1000’s of $$$$ in lost revenue as a voice-over artist. My ENTIRE workflow is based around Adobe CC (perpetual rent)… Off to buy another software package so I can at least put out work for my paying clients. Guessing Adobe got rid of it’s QA testers…how the hell could you NOT catch this ?????

too late already updated, waited a week. Whats the hold up?
