Make the Cut: Do You Have What It Takes?

Are you the next up-and-coming music video editing visionary?

Today, Adobe is launching our “Make the Cut” contest in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Premiere Pro. We’re offering you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to cut a video for “Believer,” the new hit single by mega-band Imagine Dragons. In an industry first, Imagine Dragons is offering fans full access to their creative license so you can edit your version of the music video using Premiere Pro CC. The Grand Prize winner of the contest will receive $25,000.

The internet has changed the music landscape significantly over the past 20 years. Downloads and streaming services have increased access to music, with millions of songs right at our fingertips. But there is a downside, as evident by the royalty battles and piracy issues that abound, and musicians are rightfully protective of their intellectual property.

This makes our “Make the Cut” contest with Imagine Dragons all the more unprecedented. Imagine Dragons is giving their fans access to uncut footage from a leading music video director to cut and craft as they see fit, supporting and nurturing the creative community with the opportunity to create their own music video and, importantly, be recognized for their work.

Additionally, this is an opportunity for Adobe to celebrate the amazing work that our fans and budding video enthusiasts are creating. We understand that it’s not just about the tools; it’s about the 25-year relationship that we have built with our community. It’s our hope that over the next 25 years, we’ll continue to provide the resources and opportunities, like this contest, that challenge you to create and show what you do best.

Now, about the prizes. Submissions to the “Make the Cut” contest will be evaluated by a panel of luminary judges, who will select one ultimate winner to receive the $25,000 Grand Prize. Judges include members of the band, Academy Award winner Angus Wall, who edited films like Fight Club and Vinnie Hobbs, a music video editor who works with Kendrick Lamar and Kanye. We’ll also award bonus prizes of $1,000 each and a year-long Creative Cloud subscription for four special categories: Fan Favorite, Most Unexpected, Best Young Creator and Best Short Form. And one special bonus prize of $2,500, a year-long subscription to Creative Cloud and 25 Adobe Stock credits will go to the cut with the best use of supplied Adobe Stock clips.

Do you have what it takes to “Make the Cut”? Your chance to prove it starts now. (If you’re not a Creative Cloud member, download a free trial of Premiere Pro CC to begin).

I am a graduating college student, who wants to become a professional video editor. This would make for great exposer and work to do.

Nope. You’re not allowed to enter.

I fail to see in the rules where it says graduating college students do not meet the eligibility requirements…

Hello. I’m a 15-year-old and a freshman in High School. I’ve been a video editing fanatic since the age of 11, and have had plenty of experience with multiple software, including AVS, Sony Vegas, and of course, Adobe Premiere. I’m asking if I am old enough to be a part of this contest. I ask because I don’t see an age restriction for the contest, and I’m afraid I don’t meet an age requirement.

    Thank you.

    • By mrcrozier - 4:49 AM on March 18, 2017   Reply

Hey Jacob. Yeah the rules say “age of majority in their jurisdiction.” I think that means whatever the legal age is in your country. So, yeah I’m not sure you’re old enough 🙁

      • By Alision - 4:11 PM on March 21, 2017   Reply

When you read sweepstakes rules that state you have to be above the age of majority to enter, it means that you have to be considered an adult where you live.

Why? For one thing, minors cannot legally enter into contracts, so they cannot agree to be bound by the rules.

For another, many countries (including both Canada and the United States) has special laws governing advertisements for children.

kind of sucks cause im the same age as you, and I seriously want to enter why turn down an opportunity.

Can you use assets you own in After Effects like explosions?

    • By mrcrozier - 4:57 AM on March 18, 2017   Reply

No, “Entry must not contain any content that is not included in the Sponsor Files.”

  • By wbrenner - 8:41 PM on March 15, 2017   Reply

this is awesome… But I can’t download the assets for some reason? It tries to start for about an hour, then fails. This happens in both Firefox and chrome. Also nothing happens when I click “click for support” on the “Make the Cut” page. Where can I get support?

  • By Matt - 10:14 PM on March 15, 2017   Reply

Hey Meagan, Is editing limited strictly to Adobe Premiere, or may we use After Effects and Photoshop to alter the provided assets?

    Thanks!

A question I have is, can we use plug-ins for Premiere from companies such as Luca VFX or Jarle’s Deadpool Camera Shake Presets?

  • By Matthew - 3:19 PM on March 16, 2017   Reply

What is the deal on program usage? Can i use after effects?

  • By Brendon Porter - 5:34 PM on March 16, 2017   Reply

    From the official rules page…

Any product in the Adobe Creative Cloud may also be used to enhance your music video.

So not clear on plug-ins yet.

Hey, can you please link me to the rules page ? i can’t find it

      • By mrcrozier - 4:59 AM on March 18, 2017   Reply

There’s not really a direct link to it…but if you scroll down to the bottom of the official page (https://makethecut.adobe.com/en/) and click on Official Rules below the Share option, they will pop up.

        Hope that’s helpful.

  • By mrcrozier - 4:54 AM on March 18, 2017   Reply

I know this is a ways out yet, I have a question on submission, if anyone can answer it for me.

The rules say we must also upload our Premier Pro project file to prove we used Premier to do the editing. Not that I’ve tried to upload anything, but the uploader says the only acceptable formats are video formats. I see no clear way to upload the project file at this time.

Probably overthinking that part, but just curious. And for if anybody else is curious too.

    • By mrcrozier - 5:38 AM on March 26, 2017   Reply

As theguywhowritesthispost suggested, I emailed adobe at adobemakethecut@gmail.com and got a response to my question.

For anyone else looking for this answer, adobe will only ask for the premier pro project file if you are a finalist. We do not (and cannot) upload the file just to submit for the contest.

      Best of luck to everyone!

You guys should do this every two weeks or somethings, it could be like a subscription thing.

  • By Protheus - 11:45 AM on March 19, 2017   Reply

    Are third party plugins allowed???

  • By Jay - 11:36 AM on March 20, 2017   Reply

The lack of responses to key questions – especially plugins – is really hard to understand, it should not take 5 days to work out a simple yes or no?

Hi, I would like to join the contest but I’m Italian and I hadn’t see my country in the list. Why shouldn’t I join?

  • By theguywhowritesthispost - 3:43 PM on March 20, 2017   Reply

fyi I just used the contact mail adress adobemakethecut@gmail.com
I didn’t know there was a posting-feature implemented on this site but as I can see response time is not very quick here.
I hope the support team is faster via mail.

    happy editing

PS I am not trying to lure you into fake mail, down where the official rules are there is also a contact link
