Make the Cut: Do You Have What It Takes?

Are you the next up-and-coming music video editing visionary?

Today, Adobe is launching our “Make the Cut” contest in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Premiere Pro. We’re offering you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to cut a video for “Believer,” the new hit single by mega-band Imagine Dragons. In an industry first, Imagine Dragons is offering fans full access to their creative license so you can edit your version of the music video using Premiere Pro CC. The Grand Prize winner of the contest will receive $25,000.

The internet has changed the music landscape significantly over the past 20 years. Downloads and streaming services have increased access to music, with millions of songs right at our fingertips. But there is a downside, as evident by the royalty battles and piracy issues that abound, and musicians are rightfully protective of their intellectual property.

This makes our “Make the Cut” contest with Imagine Dragons all the more unprecedented. Imagine Dragons is giving their fans access to uncut footage from a leading music video director to cut and craft as they see fit, supporting and nurturing the creative community with the opportunity to create their own music video and, importantly, be recognized for their work.

Additionally, this is an opportunity for Adobe to celebrate the amazing work that our fans and budding video enthusiasts are creating. We understand that it’s not just about the tools; it’s about the 25-year relationship that we have built with our community. It’s our hope that over the next 25 years, we’ll continue to provide the resources and opportunities, like this contest, that challenge you to create and show what you do best.

Now, about the prizes. Submissions to the “Make the Cut” contest will be evaluated by a panel of luminary judges, who will select one ultimate winner to receive the $25,000 Grand Prize. Judges include members of the band, Academy Award winner Angus Wall, who edited films like Fight Club and Vinnie Hobbs, a music video editor who works with Kendrick Lamar and Kanye. We’ll also award bonus prizes of $1,000 each and a year-long Creative Cloud subscription for four special categories: Fan Favorite, Most Unexpected, Best Young Creator and Best Short Form. And one special bonus prize of $2,500, a year-long subscription to Creative Cloud and 25 Adobe Stock credits will go to the cut with the best use of supplied Adobe Stock clips.

Do you have what it takes to “Make the Cut”? Your chance to prove it starts now. (If you’re not a Creative Cloud member, download a free trial of Premiere Pro CC to begin).

I am a graduating college student, who wants to become a professional video editor. This would make for great exposer and work to do.

    • By The Great Throtor - 7:27 AM on March 15, 2017

Nope. You’re not allowed to enter.

      • By mrcrozier - 4:45 AM on March 18, 2017

I fail to see in the rules where it says graduating college students do not meet the eligibility requirements…

    • By C E Hall - 11:43 AM on April 10, 2017

So I posted my video and had a hard time getting a video to post. So I ended up having to upload a low quality SD video instead of my HD video. I prey this has no outcome on this contest.I have a better copy and just could not get it to Adobe. I made sure it was under 200mb and even under 125mb just in case and it would still not upload. I tried all file types and the only thing that would upload was a low res mp4 copy. Can you make sure that all judging know that most entries have better copies to help show of our cool effects that are hard to see in SD. Thanks for your time CEH

Hello. I’m a 15-year-old and a freshman in High School. I’ve been a video editing fanatic since the age of 11, and have had plenty of experience with multiple software, including AVS, Sony Vegas, and of course, Adobe Premiere. I’m asking if I am old enough to be a part of this contest. I ask because I don’t see an age restriction for the contest, and I’m afraid I don’t meet an age requirement.

    Thank you.

    • By mrcrozier - 4:49 AM on March 18, 2017

Hey Jacob. Yeah the rules say “age of majority in their jurisdiction.” I think that means whatever the legal age is in your country. So, yeah I’m not sure you’re old enough 🙁

      • By Alision - 4:11 PM on March 21, 2017

When you read sweepstakes rules that state you have to be above the age of majority to enter, it means that you have to be considered an adult where you live.

Why? For one thing, minors cannot legally enter into contracts, so they cannot agree to be bound by the rules.

For another, many countries (including both Canada and the United States) has special laws governing advertisements for children.

kind of sucks cause im the same age as you, and I seriously want to enter why turn down an opportunity.

  • By SomeGuy - 5:30 PM on March 15, 2017

Can you use assets you own in After Effects like explosions?

    • By mrcrozier - 4:57 AM on March 18, 2017

No, “Entry must not contain any content that is not included in the Sponsor Files.”

  • By wbrenner - 8:41 PM on March 15, 2017

this is awesome… But I can’t download the assets for some reason? It tries to start for about an hour, then fails. This happens in both Firefox and chrome. Also nothing happens when I click “click for support” on the “Make the Cut” page. Where can I get support?

  • By Matt - 10:14 PM on March 15, 2017

Hey Meagan, Is editing limited strictly to Adobe Premiere, or may we use After Effects and Photoshop to alter the provided assets?

    Thanks!

    • By Protheus - 9:38 AM on March 16, 2017

      I have the same question…..

      • By Matthew - 3:17 PM on March 16, 2017

I also have the same question

    • By Ben Patrick - 6:18 AM on March 29, 2017

When I entered my project it asked what programs you used, and it included most of the popular programs in the CC. So yes, not only are you allowed to use them, but you are actually encouraged to use them. In my opinion After Effects and Lightroom would be great for this because a lot of the footage is dark and could use some touching up.

  • By Diana - 5:44 AM on March 16, 2017

Hey Meagan, this all looks awesome i can’t wait to start working on it, i have a question that’s been asked before but not answered (as far as i know) can we use AE or/and PS as well as Premier ?

    Thank you 🙂

  • By Geoff McGee - 11:58 AM on March 16, 2017

A question I have is, can we use plug-ins for Premiere from companies such as Luca VFX or Jarle’s Deadpool Camera Shake Presets?

  • By Matthew - 3:19 PM on March 16, 2017

What is the deal on program usage? Can i use after effects?

  • By Brendon Porter - 5:34 PM on March 16, 2017

    From the official rules page…

Any product in the Adobe Creative Cloud may also be used to enhance your music video.

So not clear on plug-ins yet.

    • By Diana - 9:59 AM on March 17, 2017

Hey, can you please link me to the rules page ? i can’t find it

      • By mrcrozier - 4:59 AM on March 18, 2017

There’s not really a direct link to it…but if you scroll down to the bottom of the official page (https://makethecut.adobe.com/en/) and click on Official Rules below the Share option, they will pop up.

        Hope that’s helpful.

    • By Eric - 8:59 AM on April 9, 2017

Argh I wish I had read more carefully. I pulled off most of the effects I wanted to do just in Premiere, but the masking was a little hard. AE is much more intuitive with masks to me. However I finally figured out how to do bezier moves in Premiere, something I always relied on AE to do, so it was a nice learning exercise to save a step from jumping between apps.

      Good luck everyone!

  • By pedro - 12:48 AM on March 17, 2017

Hi, why residents in Portugal, Italy and Greece are not elegible for the contest?

    • By pedro - 4:37 PM on March 22, 2017

is there a list of countries allowed to participate?

      • By pedro - 4:27 PM on March 26, 2017

        yes

  • By pedro - 9:18 AM on March 17, 2017

there is another contest for the rest of the world? many caountries are missed. part of europe, central and south america, africa, australia….

  • By mrcrozier - 4:54 AM on March 18, 2017

I know this is a ways out yet, I have a question on submission, if anyone can answer it for me.

The rules say we must also upload our Premier Pro project file to prove we used Premier to do the editing. Not that I’ve tried to upload anything, but the uploader says the only acceptable formats are video formats. I see no clear way to upload the project file at this time.

Probably overthinking that part, but just curious. And for if anybody else is curious too.

    • By mrcrozier - 5:38 AM on March 26, 2017

As theguywhowritesthispost suggested, I emailed adobe at adobemakethecut@gmail.com and got a response to my question.

For anyone else looking for this answer, adobe will only ask for the premier pro project file if you are a finalist. We do not (and cannot) upload the file just to submit for the contest.

      Best of luck to everyone!

      • By Rodrigo - 10:41 AM on April 3, 2017

        thanks mate!
        success to you as well

  • By camdogfall - 5:21 PM on March 18, 2017

You guys should do this every two weeks or somethings, it could be like a subscription thing.

  • By Protheus - 11:45 AM on March 19, 2017

    Are third party plugins allowed???

  • By Jay - 11:36 AM on March 20, 2017

The lack of responses to key questions – especially plugins – is really hard to understand, it should not take 5 days to work out a simple yes or no?

    • By Scott - 3:18 PM on March 28, 2017

Agreed Jay, There is a lot of unclear information.
My question is are we aloud to use fonts?

It would be great if there was a support team or something in place.

  • By Filippo - 12:06 PM on March 20, 2017

Hi, I would like to join the contest but I’m Italian and I hadn’t see my country in the list. Why shouldn’t I join?

  • By theguywhowritesthispost - 3:43 PM on March 20, 2017

fyi I just used the contact mail adress adobemakethecut@gmail.com
I didn’t know there was a posting-feature implemented on this site but as I can see response time is not very quick here.
I hope the support team is faster via mail.

    happy editing

PS I am not trying to lure you into fake mail, down where the official rules are there is also a contact link

    • By mrcrozier - 4:01 PM on March 20, 2017

Might give that a try and see what happens. Thanks!

I’m a Colombian undergraduate student in the USA trying to become a Digital Media Artist, is there any restriction for me in order to participate in this contest?

  • By Eliana - 2:15 PM on March 22, 2017

Hi, so if I’m from argentina that means y can’t participate? I would really like to have a chance. Thanks

    • By Rodrigo - 11:10 AM on April 3, 2017

go for it, me encantaria ver que produces – éxito!

  • By Eric - 5:57 AM on March 23, 2017

My 16 year old son want to study as movie director but we are living in Quebec, he didn’t read that Quebec is excluded from the contest, and unfortunately he done a great video that will never seen by the group. It’s really sad 🙁

    • By Jorge - 11:21 AM on March 23, 2017

It’s a shame leaving some countries out of the contest 🙁 Portugal is also not elegible for the contest. Don’t understand.

    • By pedro - 4:26 PM on March 26, 2017

well, maybe all the country out of the contest should stop to use premiere

  • By Jacob - 7:34 AM on March 23, 2017

Why in India Tamil Nadu is Excluded ? We Need a Valid Reason.

  • By Jack - 1:08 PM on March 25, 2017

Hi, I read in the official rules we must submit our project file as well to prove we edited the footage in Premiere, however after already submitting my video I do not see any button or outlet that leads me to entering my project file as well. Where do I find that?

    • By mrcrozier - 5:41 AM on March 26, 2017

Hey Jack, yeah I emailed adobe about that cuz I was curious too. Adobe will only ask for the premier pro project file if you are a finalist. We do not (and cannot) upload the file just to submit for the contest right now.

      Hope that helps.

  • By Sajan Gohil - 1:44 AM on March 27, 2017

    • By Clement - 7:14 AM on March 27, 2017

      Just the music, nothing more

    • By Ben Patrick - 6:21 AM on March 29, 2017

Clement is wrong. The files include music, plus all the footage from the shoot as well as some Adobe stock footage.

  • By MGS - 5:10 PM on March 27, 2017

I had to compress the file size in order to submit it, and it slightly affected the video quality. Will this affect the judging, even though it’s not my fault?

  • By Scott - 11:10 PM on March 27, 2017

    Hi,

Is it clear anywhere that we can use fonts? It doesn’t say we can’t?

  • By Trevor Stanley - 4:38 PM on March 28, 2017

Hey I submitted my video I think…Is there a way to check if it sent, and if it got the right video? I might have messed it up by sending the wrong file. But it wont let me change it because i have already entered. Thank you.

So once you enter your project, I remember it said you can check in on how you and the competition are doing. Now I can’t find that, where do I do that at?

        • By Falecia Woods - 7:01 PM on April 3, 2017

I’m having the same issue. I uploaded my file and it spins and I’m not sure if it was received/uploaded. Do they send a confirmation email? I don’t want to get disqualified for sending in multiple submissions.

  • By Rodrigo - 11:06 AM on April 3, 2017

Submitted! I hope it made it up well, not sure what to call the final render, so I added my initials at the end. Success to us all 🙂

  • By Ihab - 1:50 PM on April 3, 2017

    Hi!

I downloaded the assets and opened the project file, but Premiere tells me that some files can’t be imported as the original link refers to files that contain audio but that the available files don’t contain audio, which is not true, when I check them via my browser, I hear the audio track and audio is also listed in the file description under “details”. Even when I import these files manually into Premiere, they don’t contain audio. Can someone help out? Thank you in advance! Cheers

    • By Ihab - 1:59 PM on April 3, 2017

It seems to affect every file that contains audio. But I can import other videos that contain audio that are not part of the assets, so it’s not a hardware issue.
