Adobe Stretches the Creative Canvas to Apple Watch with Three New Apps

Imagine if you could channel all the creative productivity lost from checking your phone hundreds of times a day into a new project—what would you create? The arrival of the Apple Watch, and the ability to prioritize and customize alerts, signals a shift in how we’ll interact with personal technology.

We certainly expect Adobe customers—some of the most creative people on the planet—to be early adopters of the Apple Watch. That’s because designers get a lot of their best ideas not while sitting at our desks, but from interacting with and observing the world around us. Geoff Dowd, our director of experience design, made this point in a recent New York Times article. When Geoff has a few spare minutes, he hops on his bike and takes in the vibrant district around Adobe’s San Francisco design studio.

This is Adobe’s mission: to stretch the mobile canvas and inspire creatives. So today we updated three of our popular iPhone apps to add support for Apple Watch: Behance, Adobe Color CC, and Creative Cloud. The intersection of Creative Cloud and wearable technology has arrived:

Behance is the world’s leading creative community, where you can get feedback and find inspiration from over five million creative peers.

iOS 8 iPhone 6The new release of Behance app for iPhone makes interaction with critical updates frictionless, bringing your Inbox, Notifications, My Work, and Nearby directly to your Apple Watch. Remotely control Airplay presentations of your online portfolio from your watch to open a Behance project and step through the individual images of a project presentation. Use Handoff to move seamlessly from your Apple Watch to your iPhone when you want to comment on a file or project; use the share dialog to post a link to Facebook, Twitter and other services.

With Adobe Color CC, see the world in a spectrum of color, wherever your inspiration takes you. Discover the colors in the world around you—view the theme, name, distance, and map location.

What about Android?

An update on mobile support.

Our vision for our mobile apps is to push the boundaries of where and how you can create. Whether you’re capturing inspiration on the go, sketching your ideas on the fly or compositing photos, these mobile apps are fundamentally connected by your Creative Profile and help make your graphics, colors, brushes available to you as you move from app to app and from your phone to desktop.

 

While we initially launched these apps on iOS, we didn’t forget you Android. We’re working hard to develop Android phone support for some of our most popular apps. But we want to do it right, in a way that complements the strengths of the Android user experience and design. While we can’t offer specific release dates, you should expect to see the first of these apps starting in Summer 2015.

We’re also eagerly developing an Android version of the Creative SDK, which powers both Adobe and third-party apps. This SDK will allow the creation of more Android apps that connect you to your Creative Profile wherever you are.

As of now, there are Android phone apps available for the creative social network Behance, Behance Creative Portfolio, Creative Cloud file management, and Lightroom.

An Online Portfolio: Your Professional Story

The ninth (and final) installment of I Went to Adobe Creative Camp at SXSW 2015… And all I brought back is a series of blog posts, the firsthand account of a first-time Adobe SXSW Creative Camp attendee.

Promoting Your Creative Work on the Web with Roxanne Schwartz

Behance_2 For those who don’t know, Behance is the leading platform for sharing and discovering creative work. The numbers on the left offer up the number one advantage of posting work on Behance… Exposure. More than 200 million page views each month of exposure.

Not only does Behance have free online portfolios, it’s also the bones of ProSite, a customizable website builder that enables people to use custom domain names and easily sync Behance projects to it. What a lot of people don’t know is that ProSite is included with a Creative Cloud subscription (and the integration makes it super easy to share work).

Roxanne, a community manager at Behance, has seen thousands of web portfolios. She knows what works and what doesn’t when it comes to showcasing creative work online. She had some good ideas about how to think about this hugely important promotional tool.

Portfolios and profiles (words used interchangeably throughout this post) are always-on creative showcases. Make sure they represent you well when people stop to look:


  • Let the work take center stage. Viewers spend only a few seconds looking through portfolios. Make sure yours is easy to scan and that the work is the center of attention. Cluttered portfolios are frequently over-compensating for mediocre work.
  • Behance_3 Curate your best work. There’s truth to the saying: You’re only as good as your last project and your portfolio is only as good as your worst image. A few great images are better than a lot that are just okay. If there’s something you’re not proud of, leave it out.
  • Use eye-catching images. People have very short attention spans so catch their eye and keep them interested. Make sure that images are large, clear, and consistently sized. And remember, this isn’t a client hand off, it’s a portfolio… Be selective. It’s not necessary to show everything.
  • Share the backstory. Don’t be afraid to show process—from early sketches to finished work. People love knowing how and why things were done. Offer up details.
  • Highlight things that give you an edge. Don’t be afraid to mention awards, accomplishments, or testimonials.
  • Keep your portfolio fresh. This is a living, breathing document so resist the temptation to bulk it out with old or irrelevant work. The best portfolios are current portfolios.
  • Keep in touch. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date and easy to find. And add social accounts; email isn’t the only way to reach people.
  • Tell a story about yourself. Stories are more interesting than a list of past jobs. Spend some time thinking about how to represent yourself and your work with words.
  • Give credit where credit is due. Worked with a team? Don’t overstate your role and give credit to everyone who worked on the project with you. People appreciate being publicly acknowledged and giving credit where it’s due will ALWAYS make you look good.
  • Get feedback. Make sure your portfolio is ready to share with the world. Other people’s impressions are extremely valuable; ask friends and colleagues for critiques.
  • Share personal work alongside client work. It shows passion, commitment, and the ability to self-start.
  • Make your profile part of your project process. Working on a project? Set aside some favorite images to include in your portfolio. Once the project ends, documenting the process will be a snap.
  • Promote your work. Sharing isn’t bragging. Pick two or three social channels, connect them to your portfolio and share. Maintain an active presence, and respond to people when they comment.
  • Follow people who inspire you. Be thoughtful about the people you follow; it’s not only daily inspiration but a great way to build the foundation of a creative network. And don’t forget to network in person at local events.

A final four. Questions to ask yourself about your online profile/portfolio:

  • Can people easily find and view your work?
  • Does it represent you well?
  • Have you gotten feedback from friends/coworkers?
  • Do you have a plan to review and edit it?

The Importance of Colour for Creatives

As designers, photographers and creative professionals, we all know the importance of visual impact in our work. It is, after all, essential to communicating a message in a way that’s exciting but also effective.

During March, we’ll be exploring this topic a bit further, with a particular focus on the importance of colour for creatives.

Colour curiosities

Colour is a fascinating subject. Not only does it bring our work to life through inspiring and balanced themes and palettes, but also helps make our lives easier by allowing us to associate complex ideas in simple and subtle ways; for example, when you see red on a street sign, it’s a signal to stop as there might be cars coming… That’s colour in action.

Even more interesting is exploring the science and psychology behind color: Did you know that research suggests men and women actually see the colour red differently? Or that colours are responsible for at least 62% of our first impressions? Or that seeing yellow and orange can actually make you hungry? It’s not hard to find these and many other curiosities around colour, which illustrates its potential to help us create amazing work with Creative Cloud.

We want to celebrate colour in a vibrant way, and invite you to join us throughout March. Here’s how:

  • Talent Tuesdays
    We’ll be actively looking for interesting artists and projects on Behance that explore colour in exciting ways. We’ll highlight one artist per week, each Tuesday. Expect a lot of interesting talent and amazing work getting the attention it deserves
  • Weekly colour challenge
    We love a good creative challenge and know you do too, so in these next few weeks we’re exploring a different point of view around colour. Each week, we’ll pick one colour, tie it to a specific environment, and challenge you to take your best shot (pun intended) in a creative way that brings that colour and environment to life.

Download and Share: Market Assets and Creative Cloud for Desktop

Get a headstart on projects with Creative Cloud Market and ensure that you and your team can access your favorite assets anytime, anywhere with Creative Cloud Libraries.

Creative Cloud Market

Creative Cloud Market is a collection of professionally crafted and curated vector graphics, icons, patterns, UI kits, brushes, and more from the best creatives on Behance. Already there are thousands of assets available on Market and the number grows with each passing day. With Creative Cloud paid subscription (except the photography plan), you are entitled to download up to 500 free, unique, ready-to-use, and royalty free assets every month. Once downloaded, you can use them freely in your creative projects, and modify or build upon them according to your needs.

Access Market

Creative Cloud for desktop app is a gateway to Creative Cloud Market. Using Creative Cloud for desktop, you can browse, search, sort, or download Market assets.

To access Market from Creative Cloud for desktop, choose Assets > Market. Then search assets by specifying a keyword, category, tag, or creator in the search box. You can further refine or sort results from the options available in the All Categories dropdown.

Download assets from Market

To download an asset, click the asset thumbnail, click Download, and choose an existing Creative Cloud library or create a new library where the asset will be downloaded. Downloaded assets are also saved in the Market Downloads folder in your main Creative Cloud Files folder.



CCMarket_4In addition to the information like the asset name and the creator, the asset page also shows tags applied to the asset. You can click any tag, to search for other assets that are tagged with the same keywords, to find related and similar assets. For example, clicking the “pen” tag in the above example will search and display other assets tagged with pen.



CCMarket_5Downloaded assets are now available for use across all desktop and mobile apps and devices. Note: Creative Cloud for desktop must be running for downloaded assets to sync and become available for use. You can view downloaded assets in Creative Cloud for desktop by clicking the dropdown menu next to Market and selecting Downloaded under the Sort category.

Share assets and collaborate using Creative Cloud Libraries

While you can access downloaded Market assets in all apps and on all devices, in some situations you may want to share assets with your team, so that everybody is in sync. You can achieve this by sharing the Creative Cloud Libraries where assets are downloaded. It allows you to collaborate while maintaining consistency in your designs.

You can share a library from Creative Cloud Assets or the Libraries panel in Adobe Photoshop CC or Adobe Illustrator CC.

In addition to downloading Market assets, you can add more assets to Libraries using mobile apps and Creative Cloud Assets. For more information about working with Libraries, see Creative Cloud Libraries.

Adobe Ideas: A New Name, A New Look, A New App

Recently, Adobe Ideas, our popular vector drawing app for iPad and iPhone, that’s been downloaded over 2.2 million times since May 2013, grew up and got better. Adobe Illustrator Draw is a transformation that means a newer, more modern version of the full-featured drawing app that people have come to rely on.

 

Not just an update; a complete reinterpretation

Instead of settling for just another update, we’ve created an entirely new version of Adobe Ideas. Based on Adobe’s new Creative SDK, the redesigned version of Ideas (Adobe Draw) matches the look and the connection to creative assets and community found in Adobe Photoshop Sketch and Adobe Illustrator Line. But it’s not just creating consistency across our mobile apps that has us so excited, it’s also the new features… which include new, completely rewritten, robust file syncing, and the ability to effortlessly bring files into Adobe Illustrator CC.

For everyone who loves Adobe Ideas, don’t worry: Not only have we kept the core drawing elements and everyone’s favorite controls and preferences, but the app is still free.

What we’ve added is Adobe Ink & Slide support, as well as a software version of Slide (called Touch Slide) for drawing straight-lines, geometric shapes and French curves—without hardware. (No longer will it be necessary to create workarounds for drawing perfect circles.) We’ve also added Behance integration, including the ability to post works in progress to Behance and receive in-app feedback; the ability to view a gallery of content inside the app; and effortless Creative Cloud back-up and file syncing.

Sign-up, sign-in and sync

What can you do to get going with Adobe Draw? Take the time to create an Adobe ID, sign in with it, and sync your Adobe Ideas files to Creative Cloud… because our new drawing app is here. And now that it is, existing Ideas files that are synced to Creative Cloud will be automatically migrated to Adobe Draw. (Files synced to Creative Cloud can be grouped together in folders that will be imported as projects in Draw.)

The Adobe CC Mosaic: A Celebration of Community Creativity

Over the last few weeks we’ve been slowly revealing the tiles of our Creative Cloud Mosaic. This week, at the #CCNext launch, we unveiled the completed piece; it’s now highlighted both on Behance and on a number of Adobe’s Facebook pages.

We’re really happy with the result and hope you love it as much as we do. We love collaborating with artists in different disciplines from around the world and seeing what they can do when given a challenge.

We’ve done a number of interpretations of our brand over the past several years—beginning with the “Adobe &” project, and several Adobe Remix projects—and the CC Mosaic is another milestone of the type of work we want to do with our creative community as we continue forward.

It’s important to us that the community feels they have co-ownership of the Adobe brand. Revealing Our Creative Cloud Mosaic

Adobe is celebrating creativity by bringing together artists from around the world to help us co-create our new Creative Cloud identity. The idea is simple: we’ve invited 48 designers and artists from around the world to contribute “tiles” of their own creative expression which we’ve assembled into the world’s most creative digital mosaic. This mosaic will actually serve as our Creative Cloud identity to be released on June 18.
