Blog Post:Just over one year ago I got wind of a NEW social network that was sweeping the globe. It was raw, energetic, and appealed to the growing generations of Millennials and Gen Z people who have grown up with a smartphone next to their teddy bear. After the explosion of Meerkat at SXSW in 2015, a competing product Periscope was quickly snatched up by Twitter and launched just over one year ago. Since then, Justin Lafferty of Ad Week reports that there have been over 200 million broadcasts. With Facebook, YouTube and others entering the live streaming race.  I had the opportunity to attend and speak at the very first Periscope Summit held in NYC in October and I was amazed at the immense group of influencers that have helped grow this new social network so quickly. Brian Fanzo, Ryan Bell, Amanda Oleander, Lizza Monet Morales, Africa Miranda, and Bree Olsen these are all names you know and love if you are a scoper and should get to know if you haven’t joined up yet. Its hard to argue against live streaming and video being the future of social networks with the explosion of snapchat and with how much Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube have invested in these platforms. Here are 3 ways that livestreaming with Periscope is leading the charge for the next generation.
  1. Its Facetime on steroids: Periscope provides a great opportunity for Millennials, Gen Z, and even older generations to share every experience to a captive audience. The above named scopers have a loyal following, who much like in the popular movie The Truman Show, hang on every moment these few influencers decide to scope each day.
  2. You can build a brand without experience: If you feel you have something unique to offer like knowledge, passion, artistic abilities, speaking abilities, dancing tips etc Periscope provides the perfect place to display those skills and build a substantial following to build your personal brand even at a young age. In a world where social influencers are brought into everything from conferences to movies a unique talent displayed on Periscope and paired with other marketing can lead to success.
  3. Its authentic: The theme of power scopers success was authenticity. Could it be that Periscope is a small step to bringing the texting generation back to a world of real communication? Of course you are answering text questions, but unlike with other social networks once you click record you are live. You don’t have an opportunity to think of the perfect response or content, and active viewers crave people who give them this authentic view rather than a rehearsed or scripted scope.
Live streaming is the new wave in an ever evolving social framework. Twitter even announced they are going to invest heavily in Periscope and Vine to improve their video offerings and monetize them. Video provides a great engaging way to reach your consumer. Periscope provides an opportunity to show an authentic view of your brand and for consumers to link your brand to a chosen ambassador. Its also a way to reach Millennilas who became the largest group in the workforce in 2015 and have increasing buying power. If you’re a marketer or business and want to know about Periscope just turn to your 16-30 year old child, nephew, or neighbor and I am sure they can tell you all about it.
