The Photoshop Team Heads to Comic-Con

My love for comics brought me to San Diego Comic Con in 1993 and it was my first convention experience. Now, almost 20 years later, I’m back on the convention circuit with Wondercon and soon San Diego Comic Con 2012. Myself and a few others from the Photoshop team will be hosting a panel session on Saturday where we’ll discuss comic artwork and the use of Photoshop CS6 on July 14th, from 6:00p.m. – 7:00p.m. (Room: 11AB).

I used to be a prolific artist back in the day. Comics, ad work, designs, videos, you name it. As a Quality Engineer for Photoshop, I focus on all things 3D and enjoy creating artwork for our code named splash screens for Photoshop and Lightroom. For those who may not know, we select a code name for every version of our software, submit fun designs for splash screen art and the team picks their favorite.

From Comic Art to Testing Tools…

I have been at Adobe for over 13 years, publishing art for the past 25 years for a variety of comics and other industries, and like many – my first exposure to Photoshop, was love at first sight. I begged my graphic design friend for Photoshop time on her computer. The idea that I could scan artwork and then modify it opened up all kinds of new avenues for creativity. When I was busy creating comics, I did all my text and lettering inside Photoshop. The art world was opening up, digital cameras were introduced, scanners were cheaper…it was a great time to explore all the new technology that was coming from Silicon Valley. Little did I know I would one day play a part in it all – contributing to amazing software like Photoshop!

When the comic industry began to wane in the mid-1990s -from forces beyond its control- I decided there was a new path for me to follow and that brought me out west to San Jose, California to pursue a job at a company I admired – Adobe. When I found myself inside its walls I was thrilled, creativity was bursting from every team and Photoshop and other apps I enjoyed using were suddenly at my fingertips. I quickly faced new challenges and although I was not always using pencils, brushes or paper it was just as captivating. I was hungry for knowledge, began to work on a variety of products and eventually moved to the Photoshop team. It was as if a gift arrived and I was ready to seize it. I was excited to continue exploring Photoshop and being a part of its evolution.

I can tell you there is not a day that I do not enjoy coming to work or appreciate the magnitude of my good fortune working on products like Photoshop CS6 Extended. As an artist being on the team challenges me, from testing the tools you may use every day, to coming up with new scenarios for the future.

Come See Us at Comic Con!

If you’re an artist or a comic lover, like myself and happen to be hanging out at the show, definitely stop by our panel. We’re always excited to meet with other artists who use the features we work on for each release. We’ll be giving away some great prizes and sharing some tips for Photoshop. If you’re not going to be in San Diego, we’ll share photos from our trip soon. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for updates!

When you are there go say hi to Jeph Jacques of Questionable Content. He does a really great web comic strip with some impressive artwork all done using Photoshop.

Daniel, thanks for your good work helping make the best software out there. Don’t forget about the Adobe Sketch club, I’ve seen many images of yours that should be displayed there!
