Create EPUB eBooks with Adobe InDesign

I keep getting questions on how to create EPUB from InDesign, so am pointing out some resources on on how to create EPUB eBooks using Adobe InDesign. There are quite a few resources on, and you can use to bring yourself quickly up-to-date, and start publishing EPUBs.

I’m adding links to a few videos and PDFs here:

Hi, I’m already exporting in ePUB with CS5.5 but I don’t have a New iPad with Retina.

InDesign CS5.5 export the “text-indent” and the “margin” values of a paragraph style only in pixels, it doesn’t accept em, so I’m worried that all my ePUB will show a 1/4 distance between paragraphs when viewed on the New iPad.

Do you have any specific information about this?

Sorry, half the distance (not 1/4) it shows on a iPad 1 or 2.

Is there a way to export InDesign files to EPUB format without DRM restrictions? It’s my book, I should have the right to convert it to any format I want using Calibre or another software.

I am working on my 5th ebook so I have had experience. I export my Indesign document as an epub. But this time I am getting a very strange message in my epub that I have never gotten before. AND no matter what I do I can’t get rid of the darn thing. I was hoping you could help me.

The message appears in a pink box at the beginning of my epub. It says –
“error on line 1906 at column 38 entity “shy” not defined error on line 1907 at column 37.
entity “shy” not defined error on line 1908 at column 40.
entity “shy” not defined error on 1923 at column 31. Entity shy not defined.
Below is rendering of the page up to the first error.”

What I have tried: I have deleted that page (but the error moves down to the next page)
I have started over and recreated the document (but the error message still appears)

I am new to indesign but have sized my book at 10.5 x 9 facing pages and no matter what it only shows up in ibooks in the 8 x 10 form. I see other books out that that come into ibooks at a different size. How do they do that?
    thanks for your time.

I am trying to export books from ADE to Calibre in order to change the format from EPUB to AZW3. Only thing is when I take the ebook from ADE to Calibre I get the message, ‘this ebook is locked by DMR’. My understanding was that once I gave ADE my 16 digit unlock code (my credit card info) that was what unlocked the DMR. I just want to take the books I have and move them onto a new device that uses AZW3. And it did work for some of the books but not all. Also, Calibre has it’s own DeDMR plug in but that doesn’t seem to be very effective is some cases. Can you give me any advice? Thanks

I’m having issues with rule lines and rule lines in tables. Ironically, the ePUB file when converted to .mobi for Kindle and when viewed in Calibre the file looks great and no formatting issues. But, viewing the ePUB in ADE I lose all the rule lines. Do you know what’s up?

I have an 18 page picture book for children that I successfully exported from my InDesign CC 2014 as a fixed layout epub to Apple iBooks. I used Calibre to convert it to a mobi/AZW3 and things did not stay “fixed” Fonts and pictures were all mixed up in other places! I know Amazon used to make a Kindle plug-in for InDesign (older version) but I understand they aren’t doing anything to update it to InDesign CC 2014?
How can I get the fixed layout epub to work when converting?
